Safely Check Vision Before
Taking To Highways
With summar travel and
back-to-college trips reaching
a peak in August, the District
Unit of the Georgia Optometric
Association is advising drivers
to “safety check” their vision
before taking to the nation’s
highways.
“At least 90 per cent of dr
iving decisions are based on
what the driver sees,” Dr. J.
Keith Caldwell, president of
the Society said.
«
“In today's high-speed driv
ing environment, a driver has to
make life-and-death Judgments
quickly and often. Usually, the
deciding factor Involves his

situation is the first crucial step
in driving safely.”

On Beneficial Education
Georgia Superintendent of Sc

young adults to help make public

the Georgia Southern College

Nix agreed with critics of ed

others have been proven ineff

1. Visual acuity your ab

with both eves separatelv as

at a distance. The American
Association of Motor Vehicle
Administrators recommends a
minimum 20/40 visual acuitj
for drivers.
2. Peripheral vision—your
ability to see over a large area
without moving your eyes or
head; “seeing out of the cor
ner of your eye” increases
your total field of vision. Es
sential ror picking up vital in
formation not in the direct line
of view, such as a child near
the curb. The normal field of
vision is 180 degrees.
3. Depth perception your
ability to judge relative dis

public education today. I can

Sometimes a chirp is a very harmonious sound!

slower vehicles, for judging
the speed of other vehicles and
for stopping “in time” at red
lights and stop signs.
4. Night vision—your ability
to see under low illumination;
also to see in the presence of
glare and quickly recover from
its effect on vision. Vehicle
aids to night vision include clean
and properly aimed headlights
as well as clean, unscratcned
windshields. Because of the abi
lity to cope with glare and re
cover from its effects decrea
ses with age, many older dri

night. Never wear sunglasses at
night to reduce the effects of
glare.
5. Eye coordination your

He proclaimed himself a st

States public education system
saying, “We have set ourselves
a goal of quality education for

must work together as a team.
The driver with poor eye coo

6. Accommodation your
ability to quickly and easily

7. Color perception your

that education can give a per
son self-respect and self-con

Nix closed his remarks by
suggesting that after 16 years
or more in school, today’s col
lege graduates should be able to
offer recommendations for im
provements in public educa

“You can change the system
by working within the system.
Certainly there is nothing to
be gained by ignoring the pro

ing the past two hundred years
and starting over,” he said.

If elected I promise to give my full cooperation to
all the elected and appointed public officials of

crime areas of Atlanta. With this in mind, I commit
myself totally to the support of better law enforce

I am also committed to economy in government. I
