All Ages Susceptible
The widely held belief that
a hearing loss is equatable to
old age is simply a myth, ac
cording to the Beltone Cru
sade for Hearing Conserva
tion.
“While it is true that hear
ing losses are most common
among persons over age 55,
hearing impairments can—and
do—strike persons of all ages
including even infants,” the
crusade officials point out.
The crusade is sponsored by
Beltone Electronics Corpora
tion, world leader in hearing
aids and electronic hearing
test instruments.
There are five basic causes
of hearing losses. In the age
group from birth through the
teen years most hearing im
pairments are caused by birth
defects or as the result of in
fections or severe bouts with
childhood illnesses.
During the young adult
years the greatest threat to
hearing ability comes from
continuous or prolonged ex
posure to excessive noise.
Middle aged individuals face
the hazard of otosclerosis, a
disorder of the bones of the
middle ear.
For senior citizens the chief
cause of hearing problems is
presbycusis a loss of hear
ing due to aging. Commonly
termed "nerve deafness,” this
condition frequently results
in the victim being able to
hear, but not able to under
stand clearly.
Crusade officials stress that
'observance of common-sense
precautions can lessen the
likelihood of encountering a
hearing loss. These include
obtaining medical attention
for infections and severe
r l childhood illnesses, avoiding
exposure to excessive noise
and having an annual hearing
test.

PENSHE
On Performance ~
The strongest component on
the contemporary racing car
is neither the engine nor the
Searbox. It happens to be the
rive train, especially around
the differential.
This is due to the fact that
today’s cars use aerodynamic
air foils and wings to exert
hundreds of pounds of force
on the rear wheels. Improved
traction and additional speed
are the results.
With the engine set amid
ships it stands to reason that
very little weight remains on
the two front wheels. Drivers
tell me that, unlike older ma
chinery, the new cars handle
better with full fuel loads be
cause the fuel is carried up
front. They report “squirrely”
front ends that worsen as the
race progresses and fuel is ■
consumed.
Super-sticky tires have im
proved the situation some
what. With a racing life of less
than 250 miles, the tires are
the consistency of very hard
chewing gum. They leave rub
ber in their wake but they get
the job done.
Today’B Tip:
Check the rubber includ
ing the spare—on your car be
fore starting that well-earned
vacation.
