Rex Tallant Attends
Drum Major Training
Eex Tallant, 16 year-old son
of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Tallant
of dimming, has begun his se
cond year as Drum Major for
the Flash of Crimson.
In preparation for this dema
nding job, Rex recently attended
the American Drum Major Ca
mp In Leesburg, Fla., directed
by Vic Larson, former Drum
Major at a Florida university.
Larson personally conducts
approximately 16 similar camps
throughout the United States, d
urlng the summer months, wor
king with young people who di
rect countless high school ba
nds^
Rex attended the camp in Lee
sburg along with 72 Drum Ma
jors from Georgia, Florida and
southern states.
Rex and some of the other ex
perienced students were Invited
to attend the camp next summer
and work on the staff, teaching
the newcomers. _
The camp proves to be a
rough, exacting, demanding p
reparatlon for the many duties
and skills of the Drum Major.
The day begins at 6:30 a.m.
with calesthenics until break
fast at 8 a.m.
After breakfast, the students
were in class, listening to lec
tures, seeing demonstrations of
the many signals, commands,
etc. they must learn and be pr
oficient in.
After lunch the students wor
ked in groups of five or 10, pra
cticing march maneuvers and t
he things they had seen demon
strated in the morning classes.
This session lasted till 4:30.
After a half-hour swimming
break and supper classes andp
ractlce resumed until 11 p.m.
Needless to say, there was
not too much complaint about
“lights-out” after a day such
as that!
Rex is the first recipient of
the Larry Mulkey Memorial S
cholarship to Drum Major Ca
mp, an award made possible t

Ah
Flash of Crimson as Drum M
ajor for two years.
Rex stated, “lappreciatethis
scholarship providing the oppo
rtunity to add to my training
and experience and prepare me
for the responsibility and pri
vilege of leading the Flash of
Crimson.”
Anyone who saw Rex in his
position out front of the F.O.C.
last year knows they have a t
reat in store again this year,
as this high-stepping, spirited
young man steps off another se
ason.
Rex, who plays the French
Horn during concert season with
the F.0.C., never knows just
where the marching feet of the
Band will go next.
Last year they went from the
Regency to Underground Atla
nta to Disney World, with many
side-trips In between. Where
ver they go, of this the public
can be sure: the spirit and
dedication exhibited by Rex T
allant, Drum Major, and the y
oung men and women of the F
lash of Crimson and Fabulous
Flashes wrill provide an excit
ing performance.
The Band Box
--JOYCE TURNER
The Flash of Crimson has
been moonlighting! Now, what
ever connotation you put upon
that word, what I meant was
that they have been having even
ing practices prior to school’s
opening on the 25th, and some
nights were still marching when
the moon was already bestowing
its friendly glow upon them!
Now the first grueling week
of practice is behind them, and
even the newest members are
finding out quickly what makes an
F.O.C. member tick. And
speaking of new members . ..
I’m really having a time trying
to learn the new faces and names
of these kids! Haven’t had time
to count yet, but as I watch
and listen at rehearsal, sitting
in the bleachers with some for
mer F.O.C.’s who came to
watch and remember, I wonder
how they’ll all turn out.
I, too, remember, along with
some of last year’s Seniors
sitting around me .. and some
from the year before that.. .
five years ago when we came
here. It is hard to believe
that so much has happened to the
Flash of Crimson. ... that so
many kids have come and gone..
that so many started out just
little kids, like some we have
in the F.O.C. this year . . .
and here they sit around me,
almost grown, towering over
me now, when I used to pat their
little heads!
I sit and I watch and I listen
and I prepare myself for the be
ginnings of another year... and
another miracle. Some of the
parents of the newer members
came, too, and I am glad, be
cause I want them to know the
miracle, too. I want them to
share in the misery of those
first rehearsals, when the kids
drag in, flop down and moan
endless complaints! I want them
to listen to the first notes from
the 1972-73 F.O.C. so that at
Spring Concert and Festival
next year they can marvel, as I
do, at the music that has come
from those same kids.
1 want them to see the tran
sformation this Friday night
when that many - sized and
multi-shaped group of kids
turns out in the brilliant uni
forms of the F.O.C. and steps
out on the football field for the
first time this year. Ihavebeen
through many seasons ... I
have seen the miracle again and
again, and it is never the same..
it is always new, always excit
ing.
Mr. T. has really been putting
the kids through the paces, and,
of course, it is just the begin
ning. I am sure some of the par
ents wondered, when their child
or children got home after these
pre-school practices, if it was
really worth it . . . when our
child is tired, or worried, or
nervous, we tend to get a mite
upset ourselves sometimes!
Only those of us who are
“inside’’ know what all it takes
to make the F.O.C. what it is.
So I wish any parent of a new
member would take time to talk
to a parent of a Senior
member ... or one who has
left us and gone on.
There must be some reason
I wasn’t the only one in the
bleachers the nights I went to
these first practices! There
must be some reason we still
are close friends with kids
who have been out of the Band
for 7 or 8 years (yes, some
from the town where we lived
before here, too) ... it must
have meant something more
than what meets the eye and
ear!
So, you parents of our new
members, hang in there! Be
nice to your kids .. . they need
your encouragement, your
words of how it’s going to be.,
and they need to know you are
proud of them for taking the
hard times in order to reap the
many, many benefits of being
an F.O.C. member.
And I tell you, as one who
has been there, one of these
days you’re going to be wearing
a grin as big as mine whenever
and wherever these kids appear!
While the F.O.C. machine is
getting cranked up again, Mrs.
Tricla Browning Is getting
ready to re-activate the Spar
klers and Red Flames in the
various elementary schools and
Mr. T. will again work with the
Red Flames at Upper Elemen
tary. It is hoped that the tour
the F.O.C. made to each school
last spring will linger In the
minds of youngsters old enough
to be In Band this year when
recruiting begins.
AU parents whose children
will be in fifth grade this year
be ready for recruiting in your
child’s school if you want him
or her to be a part of this ac
tive, rewarding program. Mrs.
Browning or Mr. T. will be glad
to talk to you about it.
Well, the F.O.C. goes to
Armuchee this Friday night al
ong with our Bulldogs to start
another season. (If you don’t
know where it is, look it up
and come along!) Parents are
rushing around gathering the
necessary items to complete
the F.O.C. uniform, and tak
ing up or letting out coats and
pants.
I volunteered to take a uni
form to the cleaners for some
one! You see, for the first Au
tumn in seven years, I don’t
have one in our household . .
except Mr. T’s , of course!
Our Senior was one of those
at practice last week, watching
from the bleachers, and there
were three of us who didn't
like that too much.
In another month, she’ll be
marching with another band, at
a “little" school In Athens. I
wonder how long it will take me
to stop looking for her when the
F.O.C. takes the field!
I’ve always called them all
“our" kids . . mine and Mr.
T’s, and indeed, in so many
ways, they are. We will miss
having our daughter with us ..
we have a younger one com
ing up soon, I hope.
Meantime, to those of you
who have kids in the F.O.C.
this year, enjoy it! And I hope
you don’t mind our adopting
’em for awhllel
Here we go again!
