Game And Fish Board Opposes
Blue Ridge Parkway Extension
The Georgia Game and Fish
Commission, at its refular
meeting on Thursday, Aug. 24,
passed a resolution opposing
the proposed route of the Blue
Ridge Parkway Extension into
Georgia.
This proposed route was pl
anned by the National Park Ser
vice and in general follows the
crest of the Blue Ridge Divide
for most of the mountainous
part of its route through the
State.
The resolution empowers Joe
D. Tanner, Commissioner of the
Department of Natural Res
ources. to take whatever action
necessary to protect the valua
ble natural resources whlct
the proposed route would des
troy.
Tanner said, “The resolution
states the unalterable opposi
tion of the Commission to the
ridgeline route. This is due to
the tremendous negative impact

The resolution specifically
mentions the fact that this route

which serve, in part, as refuges
for many species of wildlife.
This would be in violation of
section 4(F) of the Federal
Highway Transportation Act of
1969. This act states that no
Federal Aid highway can be
built through public recreation
areas unless there is a tho
rough investigation showing no
reasonable alternative.
The resolution also states
that these areas have been the

and reported by a team of pro
fessional biologists for the Ga
me and Fish Commission. The
route was planned by the Na
tional Park Service with the
assistance of the U.S. Forest
Service.
The resolution states that
this planning violates cooper
ative wildlife management ag
reements with the Game and
Fish Commlsslo n in effect for
the past SO years.
The main objection to the
Parkwav Is its location on the
top of the Blue Ridge Di. iae.
This location routes the road
through the largest remaining
areas in northeast Georgia wh
ich retain a remote wilderness
character. This location also
puts the road above the head
waters of a large percentage
of the natural trout fishery in
the state.
The route location is also in
conflict with Georgia’s com-
and a permit is required. These
two dates are considered sep
arate hunts and 2,000 permits
will be issued for each date.
Applications for the gun hunt
permits must be on the form a
vailable from the refuge office.
Only one application per hunter
is allowed. Applications may be
submitted individually or as a g
roup of not more than five. Gr
oup applications must be stapled
together for mailing.
prehensive statewide land-use
planning process, according to
the resolution. This plan is cur
rently being developed to guide
the orderly development of Ge
orgia's natural resources.
Tanner also said, "The ro
ute is probably violating the
Environmental Policy Act of
1968. This act was designed to
make the public aware of the
damages and dangers asso
ciated with any given project
and to seek alternatives where
feasible. It seems that the cri
teria for this route were des
igned to exclude any alternative
route other than the damaging
ridgeline location."
This resolution was passed
by the Game and Fish Commi
ssion acting as the governing
body of the Department of Na
tural Resources. A constitu
tion amendment on the ballot
in November will change the
Commission’s name to the
Board of Natural Resources.
The deadline for receipt for t
hese applications at the refuge
office is 4:30 p.m. Sept. 8,1972.
All hunters must have their per
mits validated at the refuge he
adquarters before going afield.
Application forms may be se
cured by writing to Refuge Ma

mped envelope must be enclosed
