The
Living
Way
By REV. ROGER WILLIAMS
PASTOR, CUMMING FIRST
BAPTIST CHURCH
All of us live with criticism in one way or another. What
do we do with it? Do we use it or do we lose heart? We can
react in different ways. We can give in without stopping to
ask whether the criticism is Justified. But if we did that, the
world’s work would stop.
We can spring to our defense and shoot back. We can cri
ticize the critic. The apostle Paul did this. When the high p
riest censured him, he shot back and had to humble himself
to apologize. That is often what happens when a person shoots
back: he does nothing to improve the situation and may have
to eat humble pie by taking back his counter criticism.
Another alternative is to justify oneself as though he were
Incapable of doing wrong-all criticism, must therefore be un
justified. But to do that is to lose the value of criticism, hard
though it may be to accept.
The fact is, none of us are perfect. The suggestion contained
in the criticism however clumsily or hurtfully made can mean
a lot to the person who examines himself in the light of the cri
ticism and the sight of God.
In his autobiography, Franklin says, “A Quaker friend, hav
ing kindly informed me that I was generally thought proud; that
my pride showed Itself frequently in conservation; that I was
not content with being in the right when discussing any point,
but was overbearing and insolent, of which he convinced me by
mentioning several instances, I determined to add humility
to my list.”
Franklin had learned to use criticism.
EDUCATION...
Every time you pray, if your prayer is sincere, there will be
new feeling and new meaning in it which will give you fresh
courage, and you will understand that prayer is an education.

ATLANTA—A goal of $225,
000 has been set for the 1972
State Missions Offering in the
Georgia Baptist Convention.
The state missions observa
nce will be Sept. 10-13 in many
of the-Convention’s 2,952 chur
ches, according to Searcy S.G
arrlson, executive secretary-t
--reasurer.
Sunday Schools will have the
emphasis on Sept. 10. A day of
prayer will be led by Women’s
Missionary Unions in the chur-'
ches on Sept, 13.
State missions is one of three
major areas of Georgia Baptist
cooperative work. The other a
reas are Christian education (1-
ncluding five colleges) and ben
evolent ministers (including a
hospital, a children’s home, and
two homes for the aged).
One of toe earliest phases of
state mission work in Georgia
was the establishment of Sunday
Schools. Today, with Sunday S
chools organized in most chu
rches, toe Sunday School Depa
rtment of toe state convention
emphasizes continued outreach
and leadership training.
With the growth of various or
ganizations in toe churches, s
tate missions now includes de
partments of church music, ch
urch training, brotherhood (men
and boys’ work), evangelism,
and student work (ministry to
college students).
Other departments include a
church-minister relations ser
vice ( which assists ministers
who are seeking places of ser
vice and churches seeking min
isters), a program of work w
ith National Baptists (provid
ing leadership training for Ne
gro pastors), and two assem
bly and conference centers.
Cooperative missions minis
tries are supported jointly by
toe Convention and the Southern
Baptist Home Mission Board,
and local associations or chu
rches. These Include language
ministries, juvenile rehabilita
tion, chaplaincy programs inp
rlsons, hospitals, and resorts.
Forty associational missi
onaries in the state receive s
alary supplements from state
missions funds. Ten area m
isslonaries are state mission
employees who work with a t
otal of 37 associations.
State missions funds aid new
churches in purchasing land or
supplementing pastors’ sal
aries. Churches facing emer
gencies may also be assisted.
There are approximately 150
state missions workers. Dr.G
arrison is administrator of toe
state missions program.
