Hollis Morgan First Georgia Woman
On Death Row Since 1950 s
Georgia's first woman on death row at Georgia State Pri
son, Reidsville, since the 1950 s is Hollis Wingo Morgan and
the state says it may have to pay about s4o,ouu a year to keep
her there if she has to stay.
Mrs. Morgan, 22, recently received the death penalty foi
her part in the April 30 murder of her husband's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Morgan, of Cumming.
She is scheduled for execution this Friday, but it is likely
the execution will be stayed. A motion for a re-trial was fi
led last Friday, according to Mrs. Morgan's attorney, Jane
Plaginos, of Cumming.
The only place recognized in Georgia, by law, as a prison
for those who have been given the death sentence is Reidsville.
Mrs. Morgan was taken to the prison last week to await her
execution date and was examined by three physicians at Rei
dsville. She will be transferred to the Central State Hospital
at Mllledgevllle if further tests are considered necessary.
Gov. Jimmy Carter last Friday ordered psychiatric exam
ination of Mrs. Morgan . Prisons director Ellis MacDougall
asked for the examination, apparently in hopes that the find
ings would allow him to legally move Mrs. Morgan to Central
State Hospital and avoid paying the big bill for maintaining
one woman at an all-male prison.
Mrs. Morgan was placed on the unoccupied fifth floor of the
prison where the electric chair and several small cells are
located. A folding door was ordered closed between her cell
and the electric chair so she wouldn’t have to see it.
Prison officials researched the prisoner placement law ex
tensively before sending Mrs. Morgan to the facility and Mac-

1-A and the approval of the p
lat will be granted at the meet
ing of the Planning Commission
on Tuesday, Sept. 26, according
to Joe Blair of the Planning Co
mmission.
Dougall said he would seek during the next year a change in
the law requiring him to send those sentenced to death to Re
idsville.
Blame for the high cost of keeping Mrs. Morgan at Reids
ville is the hiring of matrons to take care of her. MacDougall
estimated that five matrons would have to be hired for a sev
en-day-a-week schedule.
MacDougall estimated that if Mrs. Morgan stayed at Rei
dsville for five years, it would cost the state close to a qua
rter of a million dollars extra just to provide matrons and o
ther services for her.
Georgia has executed only one woman since it started using
the electric chair in 1924. She was a black woman, Lena Ba
ker, 44, of Randolph County. She was convicted for murder
and died in the chair on March 5, 1945.
Although the U.S. Supreme Court has knocked out capital
punishment, it is still technically legal until the court rules
on an appeal of its decision.
The last woman on death row was Anjette Lyles, of Macon,
who back in the 50s was convicted of murder in her weird
“voodoo” case.
However, Mrs. Lyles only remained at Reidsville for 10
days.
She was then taken back to court in Macon, underwent p
sychlatrlc tests and was adjudged Insane. She was committed
to Central State Hospital and is still there.
Mrs. Lyles was convicted of murdering her young uaugnter
by putting arsenic in her food.
Along with Mrs. Morgan at Reidsville are her husband, M
ichael, 24, and Robert Howard, 25, of Decatur, all sentenced
to death in the Morgan murders.
