azines in recent years, but until
the appearance of the booklet
there was no simple, compre
hensive reference for parents
to turn to when their family

how counselors figure the odds
on whether a genetic defect
may be passed on to the next
generation. It tells the differ
ence between an inherited ab
normality and one which may
have been caused by damaging
environmental agents while
the fetus was developing in the
womb.

Need for Counseling

When genetic studies arej
completed in a family, they
are advised of the courses open
to them, but not the one to
take. The counselor will try toj
help them decide whether it I
would be best to have children, j
not to have them, or to adopt I
children, but the choice is j
theirs alone. It’s easier to make j
a decision when all the pros j
and cons and their reasons are j
at hand.
There are accurate carrier
detection tests for use in coun
seling individuals or couples
at high risk for certain traits.
Some may be simple blood
tests such as the one for sickle
cell trait. Some defects can be
detected before birth by am
niocentesis, a procedure for
withdrawing amniotic fluid
which surrounds the fetus in
the uterus. Tests performed on
this fluid or the cells it con
tains reveal if the fetus has or
does not have the suspected
disorder.
Every day the importance of
genetic disorders is becoming
more widely recognized by doc
tors, and they are referring
more and more patients to
counseling centers. Concerned
individuals are also becoming

few years, or they’ve expanded
existing services. Smaller com
munities, far from medical cen
