By JEAN POTTS
Forsyth County Librarian
Carolyn Haywood is a
favorite author among the
junior boys and girls, she writes
with simplicity of language and
style that keeps the story within
the range of the less facile
reader. Her stories are
illustrated with charming black
and white pictures.
In our book review today,
Miss Haywood introduces us to
“Taffy and Melissa Molasses.”
Taffy, his sister Melissa
Molasses, and their friend
Jonathan make a rollicking trio.
Once again she writes about the
children she introduced in
“Here Comes the Bus!”
following their activities
lace and seed pearls. The full
length sleeves cuff of beaded
lace, and the silhouette bodice
of lace and pearls was attached
to a slipper length skirt which
was circled in a deep border of
lace.
The bride’s bubble train of
organza was bordered in
scalloped edge lace, and a
cluster of lace motifs with seed
pearls centered the dress front
skirt and train center back. Her
flowing full length mantilla was
also bordered in Belgian lace
sprinkled with seed pearls and
attached to a matching lace cap
accented with clusters of seed
pearls. The bride carried a
clustered bouquet of white
carnations accented with baby
pink rosebuds.
Mrs. Janet Millwood, cousin
of the bride, attended as matron
nett; David Carlisle; Tom Wise
and Charles Edwards.
The Forsyth County Jaycettes
hosted their Region 15’s Local
President’s meeting on January
22, 1973 at the Bank of Cum
ming. Jan Bramblett and Jane
Haneline were chairmen of the
project. Phyllis Carlisle and
Barbara Barnett of the local
Jaycette club are President and
Vice-President of Region 15
Jaycettes.
One upcoming event is a
Talent Show planned by the
Jaycees for April 7. A donkey
basketball game is scheduled
for February 24 at 7:30 p.m. at
the Upper Elementary Gym.
Admission is $1.25 for adults
and 50 cents for children under
12. Tickets may be purchased
from any Jaycee or FFA
member or may be purchased

through a typical summer in
Maine.
Despite their good intentions,
the children always seem in the
middle of a mixup. Taffy,
arguing that the Fourth of July
is George Washington’s bir
thday is convinced when a man
named George from a company
named Washington arrives to
put up the new flagpole for the
flag-raising party.
Melissa, told exactly what
food to take on the picnic,
manages to give her little
brother a raw egg to eat.
Jonathan has his hands full
trying to keep a level head
through all the amiable con
fusion .
Miss Haywood has a special
fondness for her youngest
readers, and here is a story
designed expressly for them. A
first book that truly makes
reading fun, it will win the
hearts of the children from city
and country alike.
In the junior non-fiction
section we find a very good book
on whittling and wood carving,
“Fun with Wood” by Joseph
Ijeeming. This popular craft
writer has provided a book full
of exciting workshop adventure
for boys and girls. It begins with
good old fashioned, but always
fascinating, whittling, and goes
on to really beautiful wood
carving.
Whittling has been a favorite
hobby of men and boys since the
invention of the knife. This book
shows, with clear instructions,
patterns and drawings showing
the finished articles, how to
make dozens of animal figures,
birds, puzzles, tricks and useful
gifts.
Wood carving occupies the
second half of the book. Tools
and their care are fully
discussed, with technique and
many designs for chip carving.
The art of both whittling and
carving is brought within easy
grasp of the beginner.
Salt

of honor and Miss Teresa
Samples attended as maid of
honor.
Bridesmaids were: Mrs.
Stanley Richards, Mrs. Terry
Samples, Mrs. Eugene Wehunt,
Miss Sherry Westray, Mrs.
Sammy Harbin, all of Cum
ming, Ga., and Mrs. Rocky Ray
of Chattanooga, Tenn. The
bridesmaids were dressed in
pink and burgandy Swiss
designed floor length gowns
with butterfly sleeves and
empire waist, both accented
with body lace. Each was
wearing pink velvet ribbons in
her hair and carried a long
stemmed pink rose with
burgandy bows and streamers.
The gowns were designed by the
bride’s mother.
The flower girls were Miss
Dona Thompson, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Thomp
son, and Miss Mischelle Bailey,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean
Bailey of Curnming, Ga. Their
gowns were identical to the
bridesmaids’. The ringbearer
was Keith Thompson, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Wendell Thompson.
Emmett McCord Jr. attended
as best man. Ushers were
Randy Sorrells, Stan Sorrells,
Stanley Richards, Tom
Stradley, David Sorrells,
Wayne Samples and Gary Frix.
Lighting candles was Gary
Samples.
Following the ceremony a
reception was held in the church
with Miss Sherry Thomas in
charge of registering guests in
the bride’s book. Those
assisting in serving were Mrs.
Stephen Samples, Mrs. Roger
Samples, and Mrs. Jerry Un
derwood. The rice girl was Miss
lee Ann Chester, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Chester of
Curnming, Ga.
Mrs. Douglas Sorrells
directed the wedding.
