Sorghum Silage
Replaces Corn
By WALTER H. RUCKER
County Agent
Disease and drought
problems associated with the
production of corn silage have
created an increased interest in
sorghum as a silage crop here in
Forsyth County and throughout
the state. Research results
comparing the quality of corn
and sorghum are often variable.
Sorghum silage is often
reported to be lower in animal
intake and digestibility than
corn silage, but some sources
report equal or better animal
performance from sorghum
silage. The conclusions reached
differ mainly because of
varieties used, weather con
ditions during the growth
period, and the stage of
maturity at harvest.
A wide range of sorghum
hybrids according to plant
height are available. Generally,
as plant height increases forage
yields increase and grain
content decreases. Most results
indicate that to produce both
We All Make Mistakes!
One of the important lessons
learned by Band Kids in this
county, is that grown-ups make
mistakes, just like kids
do....sometimes worse! Over
the years I have had to
apologize to folks whose names
were left out, or off, or put in the
wrong place, etc. and the only
thing I have ever had to say in
my defense is that it was always
an honest mistake....no malice
aforethought....or as an af
terthought, either!
Once again I get out my
apology and dust if 0ff....we11, it
really never has time to collect
imuch dust....l use it too often
I’m afraid!
A couple of weeks ago I listed
the names of our Band Kids
recommended by Mr. T. and
Mrs. Browning for the up
coming Jr. High Band Clinic to
beheld in Toccoa this Saturday.
Now, I even made two
mistakes! I listed all of them as
“will be attending”, when,
actually, they were only
recommended, and certain ones
from that list were to be chosen
by those in charge of the clinic!
Then, the second mistake was
that I neglected to turn the sheet
over and find the two names Mr.
T. had put on the back, due to
lack of room on the front! So let
me assure you that BECKY
SONGER and CINDY JONES
were also recommended for this
clinic! Directors from 9th
District recommended students
according to musical eligibility
and experience, and Mr. T. this
week received the list of For
syth County students accepted
for Saturday’s clinic. They are:
Myra Bramblett, Ann Rucker,
Lisa Turner, Tim Howard,
Becky Watkins, Joyce Ann
DLong, David Carnes, Keith
McClure, Cindy Martin, Benny
Knight, and Robby Lady.
Students are chosen on the basis
of instruments needed to
complete two full bands, so that
the maximum benefit will be
gained by students at these
clinics.
There is always a good
response for these clinics, and it
is impossible for all those who
are recommended to be chosen
to attend. Those not chosen this
time will have other op
portunities in the future to at
tend similar clinics.
Elsewhere in the County
News this week is displayed the
list of our friends....a partial
list! They are the patrons and
sponsors of our band program,
who joined the Band Boosters
Club this year, as well as the list
of those who made donations

acceptable yields and high
grain content, the hybrid
selected fro silage should be
about in themiddle of the height
range or from five to seven feet
tall at maturity.
The hybrid selected should
also be resistant to an
thracnose, a fungus disease
which can affect heads, leaves,
and stalks. When this disease
hits sorghum early in the
heading stage, silage quality
and yield is reduced by the
destruction of leaves, reduction
of grain, and increased lodging.
Many of the newer hybrids have
some degree of resistance to
this disease and one of these
should be selected.
Another problem that some
people have experienced is
damage by birds feeding on the
heads, or grain. A chemical
compound called tannin is
present in most sorghum. The
tannin gives a bitter flavor at
certain stages of maturity, and
this makes the grain un
desirable to birds. The tannin
larger than the regular
membership donations. Due to
advertising costs, we limited

not slighting in the least our
