Girls Drop Heartbreaker
Forsyth County boys defeated
Berkmar, 54-47, in the first
round of the Region-AA West
Tournament at Gainesville
High School Monday.
Forsyth took an early lead in
the game only to have it tied up,
16 to 16, with 2:56 to go in the
second period. Berkmar went
ahead with a five point lead, 31-
26, in the third period, but then
Forsyth soared back and went
ahead again.

The lead see-sawed in the
early part of the fourth period.
It was nip and tuck with Forsyth
leading, 46 to 44, with 2:10
remaining in the game.
Suddenly Forsyth's Raleigh
Phillips stole the ball and
carried it for an easy lay-up.
Keith Holbrook hurt Berkmar
with layups on the fast break, as
he consistently beat the Berk
mar defense down the court.
Holbrook led all scorers with 16

points. Phillips added 14, and
Johnny Dishroom and Danny
Coleman chipped in 10 each.
South Gwinnett girls
basketball coach Bobby
Johnson says his team, which is
an unusual one, to say the least,
thinks they have a game won if
they are no more than 10 points
behind at the half.
That being the case, they
shouldn't even have played the
second half against Forsyth
County Monday night in the
Region 8-AA West Tournament
being played at Gainesville
High School. South took a two
point advantage into the locker
room with them at intermission,
and they ended up winning by
that same two points, 40-38.
Forsyth dominated the first
quarter of play, and they led by
10 points, 14-4, going into the
second period. Then Milligan
started South on the road back.
She hit two quick shots from
outside. Then, after Forsyth got
two points, Vicki Ford hit a field
goal, Milligan hit two foul
shots, then Vicki hit another
field goal, bringing South to
within two points.
Vicki Whitmire scored for
Forsyth on a foul shot, then
Patti Ford’s field goal brought
South to within one point, 17-16.
Milligan then fired in two more,
and suddenly South was on top
by three, 20-17.
Forsyth tied the score twice in
the third quarter, but each time
Milligan grabbed it back for
South, once with a field goal and
once with two foul shots. She hit
all 10 tosses from the charity
stripe in the ball game.
Lavonda Floyd and Jennifer
Maulden hit field goals for
Forsyth County at the start of
the fourth period to put them
back out front by one, but then
here came Milligan again with
two more foul shots, and South
had the lead back. This time
they kept it.
Patti Ford hit a field goal,
Becky Pinson got one for
Forsyth, then Milligan hit
again, putting South up by four,
38-34.
Here Forsyth had to start
fouling to get the ball, and South
hit a cold streak at the foul line.
