action. The Lady ’Dogs were
defeated by South Gwinnett,
Gainesville and Franklin
County as they finished with a
13-9 record after regular season
play.
The disastrous week began
Tuesday night at South
Gwinnett when the girls found
themselves at the short end of a
50-41 score.
Excessive fouling on the part
of the Forsyth County team was
the advantage their opponents
needed for victory. Four of the
’Dogs six sta'ters fouled out of
the contest and two others
finished the game with four
fouls apiece.
The South Gwinnett girls
outscored the Forsyth County
team 26-9 from the free throw
lane.
Offensively the ’Dogs were
led by rover Lavonda Floyd who
collected 15 points in the first
half. She was scoreless,
however, in the second half
before fouling out. Jennifer
Mauldin had eight points.
The game was a close one for
three quarters as the 'Dogs held
a narrow 36-34 lead after three
periods. In the fourth period the
South Gwinnett team outscored
the ’Dogs 16-5.
BURTON: Low, lear. Fair for
large mouth bass, striped bass,
poor for others.

Friday night saw the Red
Elephants of Gainesville break
a long, long dry spell by beating
the Forsyth County girls team
in their home court. The
Elephants eaked out a narrow
35-31 decision over the Lady
'Dogs.
A cold shooting first quarter
spelled defeat for the Forsyth
County team as they managed
only six points to their op
ponents’ 14. The ’Dogs out
scored the Gainesville girls in
the next period but could only
manage to play the visitors
even over the final two time
periods.
Sophomore Vickie Whitmire
led all scorers in the game with
13 points, 12 of which came from
the field, Lavonda Floyd had 10,
Jennifer Mauldin six and Mary
Ingram two, to round out the
Forsyth County scoring.
In the final game of the week,
Franklin County’s Donna
Forrester scored more points
against the Forsyth County
defense than any single player
this year.
Forrester had 32 points in
leading the Lions to a decisive
59-43 victory over the ‘Dogs. She
had 10 field goals and 12 points
from the charity stripe in ac
cumulating her total.
Strong outside shooting
coupled with near perfect foul
shooting enabled the Lions to
easily defeat the Lady ’Dogs.
The Franklin County team
scored 25 times from the free
throw lane while missing on
only six occasions.
Becky Pinson led all Forsyth
County scorers with 13 points.
Jennifer Mauldin scored 11 for
the ’Dogs who played without
the services of flu-stricken
starter Lavonda Floyd.

A purpose was found for the
1973 basketball season Friday
night when the Forsyth County
Bulldogs pulled out a shocking
67-65 victory over the 10th
ranked Gainesville High
Elephants. The victory was a
spark of sunshine in what has
otherwise been a dismal year
for Coach Kelly Summers’
Bulldogs.
Hot outside shooting by
forward Danny Coleman and
strong inside play by center
Johnny Dishroom enabled the
Bulldogs to stay ahead of the
high-flying Elephants through
the first two periods of play.
Dishroom hit for 16 first hdf
points while Coleman accounted
for 14 as the ’Dogs carried a 31-
25 halftime lead into the
dressing room.
The second half saw the
Elephants adjust to the 'Dogs
offense and choke the two high
scorers of the first two quarters.
The Bulldogs were not to be
denied this night however.
Running a three man weave
against the Elephants tight
man-to-man defense enabled
guard Keith Holbrook to

Bulldogs Upset Elephants, 67-65
penetrate the lane for 15 second
half points. Holbrook finished
the night with 20.
The Dogs lead throughout the
first three periods but found
themselves tied twice in the
final quarter. The Elephants
held the lead only once, that by
two points in the final period.
The ’Dogs refused to play dead
for the highly seated
Gainesville team however and
came back to take a four point
lead with only seven seconds
left in the game when Holbrook
hit two crucial foul shots.
Saturday night, however, saw
the Dogs play as poorly as they
had well the night before. As
they found themselves the
victims of a 76-55 defeat ad
ministered by Franklin County.
It was one of the Forsyth County
team’s poorest showings of the
year as they hit only 26 percent
in the first half. They finished
the night hitting 36 percent of
their shots from the field.
The Forsyth County team was
outscored by the opponents in
three of the four periods,
holding their own in only the
third quarter. The Bulldog
defense was simply unable to
contain the Lions’ John Bryant
and Junior Rivers who com
bined for 56 of their team’s 76
points. Danny Coleman led
Forsyth County scorers with 13
while Johnny Dishroom had 12.
Earlier in the week the
Bulldogs fell to South Gwinnett
in a'high scoring 84-72 game.
The South Gwinnett team built a
substantial 44-23 halftime lead
and then sustained it despite
being outscored the final two
periods.
One of the main reasons for
the South Gwinnett victory was
the holding of center Johnny
Dishroom, usually one of the
’Dogs highest scorers, to only
two points. Danny Coleman led
both teams with 24 points. Vince
Landers had 12 for the Dogs.
The Bulldogs end the regular
season with a dreary 8-15
record. Somehow, after the
Gainesville game, the losing
season seems easier to take.
Deaths

Hunters
The 1972 hunting season will
go into the books with the un
fortunate distinction as being
the worst On record for the
number of accidents. Thirty
two accidents so far have been
reported during this season,
which will go on for some
species until the last of
February. Of the 32 accidents,
there have been 11 fatalities
tying the records of 1967 and
1970.
“This season has been par
ticularly accident prone,” says
Bob Baker, Chief of Special
Services, Game and Fish
Division of the Department of
Natural Resources. According
to Baker, “Even with careful
analysis, it is often hard to pin
down the reasons for a
significant increase in the
number of accidents in a given
year. It probably is a direct
result of the quick increase in
relatively inexperienced
hunters in the past few years.”
The leading cause of both
accidents and fatalities in 1972
was “victim mistaken for
game.” io .
