■THE FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS—WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1973
Patriots Daze Dazzling Dogs, 42-0
By Ralph Heussner
Forsyth County may have
lost the ball game, but at least
the Bulldogs put on the most
dazzling play of the game late
in the fourth quarter against
BertanaAast Friday night.
Joir Trammel, playing
defensive linebacker, wrestled
the pigskin from Berkmar
halfback at the 10 and scooted
90 yards to paydirt, leaving
Patriots in his trail.
Unfortunately, the score
didn’t count because of a foul at
mid-field and Forsyth suffered
a 42-0 whitewashing in the
region match.
We Beat the Drums for Our Band Boosters
If you thought I missed last
week’s column because nothing
was happening, you’re wrong! I
was a bit under the weather,
that’s all, but nothing much
slows the F.O.C. or the Red
Flames or Sparklers down, so
they just kept right on moving
along, and it is my task this
week to try to bring you up to
date!
First, let me remind you that
the Band Booster Club mem
bership drive is all but wound
up for this year, and I hope that
you, as a reader of this column
have expressed your interest in
the band program in a tangible
way, by joining the Club. We
will be publishing the names of
our supporters as soon as our
list is complete, and we count
each of those names as blessed!
Mrs. Browning continues her
daily rounds, working
diligently with our beginner
Sparklers and our more ad
vanced Red Flame band
members, laying that im
portant groundwork of music.
These younger band members
have only to listen to the Flash
of Crimson perform to know
how important that ground
work is!
Just a word of commendation
here to Rhonda Wallace, who is
assistant majorette captain, for
her routine and direction of the
twirlers at the Homecoming
performance. Donna Smith,
captain, was a Homecoming
Queen candidate, so Rhonda
took over, as her position
dictates, and the result was
lovely. Both these girls, and
corps members Deloris
Andrews, Lynn Martin, Pam
Cobb, and Lois Neisler have
been adding much to the
F.O.C.’s halftime per
formances this year, as has our
tiny mite of dynamite, Melody
Mizer!

Q. My little girl has a doting
grandmother, but it’s not the
typical problem of indulging a
grandchild. My husband died
right after this baby was born,
and he was my mother-in
law’s only son. So his loss was
obviously extremely hard on
her.
She has never interfered
with my raising the baby
(who is now 3), but when she
has her for an afternoon or the
weekend, she receives every
thing she wants toys, books,
candy, ice cream. I’ve noticed
that she gradually has asked
more of her grandmother who
always gives in.
Now she’s demanding more
of me. Because I don’t give in
as easily, there are tears and
screams. I certainly don’t
want to hurt my mother-in
law in any way. She is kind,
very understanding, and quite
bright but also generous to
a fault. Do you have anysug
gestions?
A. It’s almost past time for
a woman-to-woman talk that
is calm and frank. Depend on
the fact that she really is “un
derstanding and quite
bright,” admit that you can
fully appreciate the joy she
gets out of being with the
child, but explain what has
been happening to her lately.
Let her know you realize
that restraint on her part will
be difficult because the
youngster’s pleas and tears
will be hard to turn down.
Frimness will pay off for both
of you adults, but even more
for the little girl because she’s
well on her way toward being
spoiled and hard to live with.
Don’t threaten in any way to
reduce the time your mother
in-law spends with her.
The Bulldogs battled to a 0-0
tie at the close of the first
quarter and generally played
the Berkmar team on even
terms. Forsyth amassed 72
yards and four first downs
while Berkmar tallied 76 yards
and four first downs.
Then the Berkmar offensive
machine cranked up in the
second quarter for 21
points before the halftime
Homecoming celebration as the
Patriots combined a potent
ground and aerial attack.
Berkmar totaled 490 yards
for the game while the Bulldogs
unofficially gained 116, equally

then you must see the Peppers!
This year’s crop is having
themselves a ball, and the
audiences are benefitting. A 1
and Rosalind Sharpe and Mrs.
Bowers of The Sharpe’s were
most generous in their praise,
but one of Mrs. Bowers’
comments really stuck with
me. She was impressed with
how much of themselves the
Peppers put into their per
formance, and she told us so.
This, I suppose, is the key to
much of the Peppers and the
Flash of Crimson’s appeal, and
their success. They really enjoy
what they are doing, and feel
that each performance
requires and deserves their
utmost effort. And, you know, it

In the second quarter, the
Patriots’ Roger Williams
scored on a six-yard run,
capping an 80-yard drive, with
two minutes elapsed. Quar
terback Johnny King spotted
end Art Bennet for a 45-yd. TD
pass and Ken Williams dove
across from the one-yard line
for the two other Berkmar
tallies. Kicker Greg Franklin
went three for three on the
PATs.
The Berkmar team had lost
three close games prior to the
Forsyth County game and was
hoping for a second-place sub
region finish at best. The
is catching...all of us who stand
or sit and listen feel this
spirit...that’s why we all enjoy
being even a part of our band
scene here.
The “What You Always
Wanted to Know About a
Quintet” Quintet has fired up
again for the season, under the
leadership of Mitchell Gordon.
Personnel includes Mitchell on
bassoon, Jeff Stancil on
clarinet, Janet Smith on
French horn, Lisa Turner on
oboe, and Alecia Hansard on
flute. This is another volunteer
group from within the F.0.C.,
Mitchell’s idea last year, and
though they have not had as
much exposure through per
formances, they are working
their way up! Leaning toward
the classical, the Quintet is
working now toward some
special music for concert
season. When you do hear them,
Patriots had lost to Duluth,
South Gwinnett and Gainesville
in the past three weeks.
In the third period, Berk
mar’s sophomore QB Glenn
Inverso hit Roger Williams for
a screen pass which went 54
yards for a TD. This was
followed by a 44-yarder to Stan
Lee in the fourth quarter.
The Patriots final tally came
on the last play of the game
when halfback Greg Alewin
burst across from the one-yard
line.
The Forsyth defensive line of

Kenny Durand, Dean Samples
and Mark Blocker gave up an
you have a treat in store!
I’d better not leave one im
portant recent event out...the
Homecoming Parade! This was
the first parade for our many
new F.O.C. members this year,
and a good initiation! Seems
the plucky F.O.C. marched all
over town, playing short
concerts at Upper and Lower
Elementary, in addition to
marching around the square
with the rest of the parade. Mr.
T. reported that everyone made
it, in various degrees of
fatigue! If you think marching
is the same as walking, try it
sometime! So now the rookies
speak in bragging tones of
blisters!
A trip to Berkmar High
School last Friday night
provided the F.O.C. with a good
reception to their pre-game
show. The folks were cour
teous, the welcome was more
than just polite, and we were
informed that the public had
been made aware of our pre

average of 20 pounds a man to
their opponents. With help from
defensive backs Trammel,
Ricky Castleberry and Joey
Wofford, the Bulldogs stopped a
Berkmar drive on fourth down
in the first quarter, recovered a
fumble in the second and forced
a fourth-down punt in the third
period.
Forsyth as forced to punt
eight times at the offense was
unable to find any momentum
after the first quarter outburst.
Trammel was the team’s
leading rusher with 63 yards on
14 carries. Gary Baron hauled
the pigskin for 21 yards in six
game performance, so we had a
full crowd for our show.
We go to Gainesville this
week, for our next-to-last
game, and then wind up the
year here at home on Nov. 9.
Concert season begins the
Monday after that last game,
as sights are set on
preparations for the F.O.C.
Christmas Concert, tentatively
set for December 18.
Traditionally the concert is
held on the night of the last day
of school; since that falls on
Wednesday, the concert is set
for Tuesday to avoid church
conflicts. Hopefully we won’t
have to change the date and
confuse you this year, but just
in case, watch this column and
listen to WSNE radio for
notices. I don’t believe anyone
who has stopped their busy

runs. Quarterback Rickie
Sexton was sacked behind the
line seven times and unof
ficially wound up with a minus
26 yards.
Sexton connected on two of
eight passes for 43 yards. Both
tosses went to Trammel. The
Forsyth QB had one in
terception which came early in
the first quarter, the third play
after the Bulldogs took the
opening game kickoff.
Berkmar boosted its record
to 5-3 while Forsyth remains
winless in eight games. The
Bulldogs play Gainesville this
Friday night.
The next Band Booster Club
meeting will be Nov. 15. Keep
that in mind, too, as it will be
the final one of 1973, and a lot
will be discussed.
In closing this week, just a
word about how I enjoy wat
ching the faces of parents of the
F.O.C. at our games each
week! Pride is there, and
satisfaction, rewards of the
faithful years they have put in
encouraging their youngsters.
To me it is a beautiful sight!
