We Are Born
In the Spirit
ByW. R. CALLAWAY
A ruler once came to Jesus by
night to ask him the way of
salvation and light. The master
gave answer in words true and
plain. “You must be born again
(from above).” Nicodemus
saith unto him, “How can a
man be born when he is old?
Can he enter the second time
into his mothers womb, and be
born?”
Jesus answered, “Verily,
verily, I say unto you, except a
man be bom of water (physical
birth) and of the spirit, he
cannot enter into the kingdom
of God. That which is born of
the flesh is flesh; and that
which is born of the spirit is
spirit,”
Read carefully the third
chapter of John. Jesus is
having a conversation with
Nicodemus which includes
about half of the chapter
regarding the new birth. In the
course of the conversation he
refers to the historical event
when poisonous snakes were
biting and killing the Israelites.
He said “As Moses lifted up the
serpent in the wilderness, even
so must the Son of man be lifted
up: That whosoever believeth
in Him should not perish, but
have eternal life.” As the
Israelites were saved from
death as they looked at the
“brazen serpent” so those who
took to Christ in faith will be
saved from eternal death and
given eternal life.
Nicodemus was an out
standing ruler of the Jews, a
national leader, a man of keen
intellect, a respected man of his
day was not able at this time to
reason out the way of salvation.
Jesus made it clear to him that

W.R. CALLAWAY
God loved the world so much
that whosoever believeth in
Him shall not perish but have
eternal life. Jesus did not lay
down the requirement that if
Nicodemus could reason out
and explain how a person can
be born from above then he will
be saved. Jesus told him, “The
wind bloweth where it listeth,
and thou hearest the sound
thereof, but canst not tell
whence it cometh, and whither
it goeth: so is every one that is
born of the Spirit.” We are not
called on to explain the way of
salvation—the how’s and
why’s. We are urged to believe
as we commit our lives to God
in Christ.
We believe that Nicodemus
did believe later on. We read in
John 19:39 “And there came
also Nicodemus, which at the
first came to Jesus by night,
and brought a mixture of
myrrh and aloes, about an
hundred pound weight, Then
took they the body of Jesus, and
wound it in linen clothes with
the spices, as the manner of the
Jews is to bury.”
There are some who say I will
not believe until I know and
can reason out the ways of God.
Jesus, after his resurrection,
said to Thomas, “Thomas
because thou hast seen me,
thou hast believed; blessed are
they that have not seen, and yet
have believed ”

How Man Can Be
One of the most important
questions and problems facing
man is that of how to be
justified before God. The fact
remains without question that
all men need justification for
all men are guilty of sin (Ro
3:10 & 23). No man is without
sin (1 Jn 1:10). But how can
man have his sin taken away
and be justified before God?
The scriptures speak clearly
therefore let us consider what
they teach keeping in mind—
“ALL scripture is—
profitable—” (2 Tm 3:15-16).
First, we note that God and
Christ are referred to as the
Justifier (Ro. 4:24-25; 3:26;
8:28). This clearly teaches us
we cannot justify ourselves (Ro
3:27), but that we must rely on
God through Christ to justify
us.
Second, we see how God
through Christ justifies—“ That
he might be just, and the
justifier of him which
BELIEVETH in Jesus.” (Ro.
3:23). The scriptures clearly
teach we are justified by
FAITH (Acts 13:29; Ro. 3:28;
5:1; Gal 2:16 and 3:8 & 24), but
to say we are justified by faith
ONLY is to contradict further
The Stolen Sunday
Some months ago I saw a
newspaper clipping stating that
in Russia “for the first time in
the fifty-four-year history of the
Communist regime, all Russian
stores except those selling food
were closed on Sunday. They
will remain closed hereafter
too.” The report continued
“that sales personnel have
been complaining for some
time that there was no need to
do business on Sundays, and
they wanted to spend a day with
their families.” This is hap-

teaching in the Bible on the
matter. James said—“Ye see

The scriptures teach furthej
that many other things are
involved in the justification of
man: Words (Mt. 12:37; Ro.
3:4), Grace (Ro 3:24; Tit 3:7).
The Glood of Christ (Ro 5:9),
and the call of God—preaching
of the gospel (Ro 8:30) are all
part of the justification of man.

So we can conclude man is
justified by God according to
faith in Christ contingent on our
obedience to the gospel as it is
written—“ And being made
perfect, he became the author
of eternal salvation unto all
them that OBEY him,” (Hb.
5:9). Are you justified before
God—justified by God, Christ,
faith, works, blood, grace,
words, and call? All of these
are important in the process of
justification and no one ALONE
will effect our justification!
Heed the conclusion of this
matter—Through faith in
Christ obey God and eternal
salvation is yours! Amen!

Sunday will never be the same.
Unless some laws are enacted
to put the brakes on our run

soon be working on Sunday just
as they do the rest of the week.
And America, our great nation
will be one step nearer the
tragic fate that bleached the
bones of nineteen civilizations
before us.
