Equal Pay
Equal Work
Feminist demands for equal
pay for equal work have been
viewed with alarm in some
corporate circles which fear
that its application will mean
the demise of the family.
Lawdson Masters, pres
ident of the NCP Manufactur
ing Co., was outraged recent
ly by a memo from his public
ity director, Miss Handout, a
single woman of 35 earning
$12,500. She had requested a
raise to $15,000 pointing out
that her predecessor, a man,
earned $25,000.
Flabbergasted, Mr. Mas
ters summoned his personnel
chief. “Does this woman real
ize that the man she replaced
has a wife and three children?
Has she no respect for the in
stitution of marriage.”
“I’ll speak to her about the
situation,” the personnel head
replied humbly.
“Thank goodness, Miss
Jamison, there are still truly
feminine women like you
around. Your 30 years of ser
vice with MCP wall not go un
noticed.”
“Thank you, sir,” Miss
Jamison replied, pouring Mr.
Master’s coffee.
“I am issuing an employe
directive,” Mr. Masters con
tinued, “regarding MCP per
sonnel policy, making it clear
that while we take pride in be
ing an equal opportunity em
ployer, MCP also recog
nizes that men are the bread
winners in our society. A
woman working for personal
fulfillment simply can’t ex
pect the same pay as the head
of a household.
“Make that about 10 pages,
Miss Jamison. Just polish up
what I said and put it in your
own words.”
A week later, Miss Jami
son’s neatly typed report was
in her boss’s “in” box. Five
minutes later, she was in his
office.
“Are you drunk. Miss Jami
son? What is the meaning of
the recommendation that my
salary be cut in half. As pres
ident of MCP, I earn every
cent of my $100,000," Masters
said.
“It’s like this, Mr. Mas
ters,” Miss Jamison crossed
her legs and kicked off one
sensible oxford. “I checked
with Mrs. Masters and you
certainly do take good care of
her and the children. But all
those girls she told me you
take care of aren’t part of
your family, so you don’t need
all that bread.”
While Masters was strug
gling for breath, Hughbert
Hutchener, MCP’s star sales
man barged in.
“Jamie, old girl, there you
are. Will you please explain to
the cashier that the cut in my
paycheck is a mistake?”
Hutchener asked.
“It’s no mistake, Hughie, ol

boy. It’s Masters’ orders. He
wants salaries based on fam
ily repsonsibilities and you’re
a bachelor,” Miss Jamison
said.
“But I’ve got responsibili
ties. The payments on my
stereo and my sports car ...
my nightclub bills
Hutchener said.
“When there’s a Mrs.
Hutchener, Hugh, the cut will
be restored,” Miss Jamison
said.
“However, since MCP is
now concerned with family
breadwinners, I’ve doubled
the salary of our 1 harwoman,
Mrs. Struggle. You know, the
widow who’s raising four chil
dren on $1,200 a year.
“Also in line wJh this pol
icy, ever; widowed, divorced
or single mother w ill get a de
pendent’s allotment added to
her pay check. And, oh yes.
I’ve made arrangements for a
child care cente* on MCP
premises so working mothers
won’t have to leav? their chil
dren with neighbcs.”
“You’ll never ge‘ away with
this, Miss Jamison. You’re
fired,” Masters screamed.
“You’ve got five minutes to
clean out your desk.”
“I’m afraid you can’t do
that,” Miss Jamison said.
“You see, the female em
ployes of MCP hi Id a mass
meeting and unless my rec
ommendations are accepted,
we’re all going oui on strike.
Of course, if you think MCP
can manage without its secre
taries, clerks, bookkeepers,
telephone operators, assis
tants. ...”
“Miss Jamison, he reason
able,” Masters pleaded.
“Ixrok, I’ll give you a two thou
increase, liaise you r salary to
$13,000.”
“That’s very goad of you.
Masters, but as vice president
in charge of personnel, I’ll be
making $30,000.”
“Miss Jamison, you’re a 51-
year-old spinster. What will
you do with all that money?”
“It’s Ms. Jamison now,”
the vice president said, stand
ing in the doorway. “And I’m
getting myself a plash pad, a
yacht and a boy friend ... in
that order
“See you on the company
plane,” Ms. Jamison
slammed the door behind her.

But now, with food prices
high as a witch in the sky,
probably a lot of us will be
eating our holiday decora
tions.
So for those of you inter
ested in having your jack-o’-
lantern and eating it too, here
is my method for preparing
Pumpkin Delight. Let me say
right now that if you plan on
eating your decor, don’t buy it
too soon or it will have enough
hair on it to make yourself a
chubby instead.
Where was 1? Oh yes,
you’ve got this big pumpkin
that your kids and a few other
unidentified children with
very runny noses have spent a
couple of days carving and
mauling.
Now remember, it’s been
out on your front porch all
night with a candle in it so
the first thing you have to do
is take out the candle before
you cook it as melted wax is
very bad for your arteries.
If you do not have a pot
large enough to accommodate
the pumpkin, then you will
have to call those kids back
who carved it, because unless
you are a rare woman you will
not have a sharp enough
knife. As to how the kids
carved it, don't ask me.
Of course once they see you
are going to eat their pump
kin, there will be tears all
around and a big scene as the
4-year-old was counting on
sleeping with it for a few
nights. You may have to
agree to this in order to get
the other kids to cut it up for
you.
Four days later you are at
last ready to start the actual
cooking. First, drop the
pumpkin pieces into three
quarts of rapidly boiling wa
ter and simmer until one of'
your kids walks into the kitch
en and asks, “What’s that fun
ny smell?”
Then remove lid and threat
en to hit kid with it. Continue
cooking as if nothing had hap
pened and ignore daughter
who announces she is allergic
to anything in the squash fam
ily.

ATLANTA - Veterans

inations for compensation and

possible effort to report as
scheduled. But in the event
they cannot keep their ap

fy the VA Outpatient Clinics
in advance. This advice comes
from Georgia Veterans Ser
vice Director Pete Wheeler
who said that failing to give
advance notice to the clinics
makes “losers” of both the
VA and the veterans.
“For the veteran, it means
unnecessary delay in complet
ing action on his claim and
subsequent receipt ofhis com
pensation or pension check,”
said Wheeler, “and it could re
sult in setting his claim aside
for failure to cooperate.
“For the VA clinic, it is
valuable time lost when phy
sicians, technicians and clerks
have reserved time for a vet
eran and then he fails to
appear as scheduled.

I thought platform shoes,
like a bad cold, would go away
in two weeks. But they didn’t.
Oh, I held out clutching
my conservative pumps and
refusing to part with my
wafer heels; took fierce pride
in announcing my refusal to
knuckle under to fashion's
pressure. I even showed a
touch of paranoia thinking
shoe designers were plotting
against me with the help of
pants manufacturers.
“Listen,” I said to my hus
band, “they just make those
ugly shoes to go with those
ugly pants that have legs so
wide you have to be Wilt
Chamberlain to look good in
them. It’s a plot.”
My husband is a man who
rarely looks up from his TV
set, but I think he was
alarmed for me. He tore him
self away from a Ban com
mercial long enough to say,
“What do you mean ‘they?’
You’d better watch that kind
of thinking because it isn’t
covered in our medical insur
ance.”
So I finally bought a pair of
super-platforms. Not because
I really wanted to, but it was
the lesser of two evils. The

Platforms
pants I’d been buying were so
long that it was costing me as
much in alteration fees as a
pair of new shoes.
When I first appeared in
platforms my daughter was
delighted. “Mom!” she en
thused, “you look really
great.”
From past experience I
have learned that if my kids
think I look really great I am
probably dressed ten years
too young.
“Thanks," I muttered, and
clomped over to the oven to
check on the baked potatoes.
They had exploded. So did I a
little later when I turned my
ankle on my way into the
bathroom to turn off the water
in the bathtub somebody had
left running.
And I think that’s the crux
of the matter: platform shoes,
plot or not, are not designed
for women of action. Cleats I
can understand, but six inches
of clunk and encumbrance I
still reject.
And Baby, we may have
come a long way, but if we
don’t kick off those platforms
we may not go much farther.
