Jump Mother Nature
By Planning Ahead
By WALTER H. RUCKER
County Agent
Why not get the jump on
mother nature this year by
planning ahead and preparing
some bulbs to be forced indoors
late this winter. You can plant
tulips, crocus, narcissus,
hyacinth and other bulb flowers
now and enjoy them in your
home during the late winter
months.
PLANTING
Gardeners who wish to do
this should get their bulbs in the
soil right away. The soil in the
pots should be loose and porous.
An equal mixture of peat,
perlite and top soil is ideal for
growing bulbs for forcing.
Plant the bulbs in the pots so
they do not touch each other.
The number to plant per pot
depends upon the size of the
bulbs and the type of display
desired. Try to plant the bulbs
two to four inches deep.
PLANT THE POT
Take the planted pots and
place them in a cold frame or
cover the pot in sand, sawdust,
or soil. Make sure they will not
dry out or get to hot on warm
days. The covering will even
out the temperature and will
provide for better flowering.
The pots should remain
outside until the leaves have
started unfurling with the
flower buds and sterms visible
(about ten weeks). This will
provide a cooling period for the

The pots should be located in
the coolest part of the house for
about one week so the bulbs can
become acclimated to the
warmer temperatures. Then
place the pots in a warm room
not over 70 degrees where the
plant will receive sunlight half
the day.
In four to six weeks the bulbs
will begin flowering and you
will have an early spring in
your home.
One last note: experts say
you should discard forced
bulbs because they seldom
grow or flower when replanted
in the garden.
