The Flash Of Crimson Believes In Music
Most of the time I guess I
take more or less for granted
the fact that my life is
wrapped up in a lot of music!
But this past weekend was so
filled with the color, ex
citement and pride generated
by several different kinds of
music and performances, that
I just have to share with you.
Many of you have music in
common with me. You have
kids in our bands here, or
have had, or you love music
and have been followers of
this column for years. So you
will know what I am talking
about!
Friday night the F.O.C.
went to Gainesville. Now that
in itself is not unusual... we
have been before! But there
was a difference. For the first
time, the F.O.C. did a half
time show without Mr. T.!
They carried it off so well, and
conducted themselves with
the apparent pride that has
become an integral part of the
Flash of Crimson. The
Gainesville folks received us
well for the pre-game, and
from my vantage-point in the
pressbox I watched, listened,
and narrated, nervously but
with more than just a smat
tering of satisfaction!
Our thanks to John Burson,
director of the Gainesville
Band, for his courtesy and
that of his students. Tricia
Browning (shall we say our
Interim Director for the
Gainesville trip?) and I ap
preciate his and his band’s
hospitable attitude!
Saturday afternoon as I sat
and listened to the Ga.-
Tennessee game on the radio,
in the background I could
hear my “other band”, the
Redcoats, knowing that our
number one daughter and
two other F.O.C. alumni were
up there in that jam-packed
stadium, performing before
thousands and thousands of
people! Even though I cannot
follow that band as I do the
F.0.C., I hear them every
chance I get, and enjoy them
every time I hear them!
Then, Saturday night, I
dressed up and went to the big
city of Atlanta with quite a
few other people, to the Civic
Center, to hear Henry
Mancini and Johnny Mathis in
concert. A packed house
listened to the music Manicni
has made famous over the
years... music of all types and
tempos to delight music
lovers the world over. I took
my opera glasses, and I would
focus in on Henry conducting
or playing the piano or
flute...and then right quick I
would scan over to the
trumpet section to make sure
for myself that Mr. T. was
really there! It isn’t that he
has never played for
“names” before..it’s just that
this was my first time to see
and hear him do so! There
was always some reason or
conflict before, but this time I
was determined to go! And I
am so glad I let nothing stop
me! Throughout the evening,
as the sound soared and filled
the auditorium, and as the
magnificent talent of Mancini
and Mathis poured over us all,
my cup just ran over!
So, it has been quite a
weekend for me, as I sit on
this Monday morning and
reflect.
Music has been so much a
part of our lives, all four of us.
The talent is tied up in my
husband and two daughters,
but, as I tell everyone, they do
need an audience, you know,
so I provide one. An audience
of one who reaps the glorious
side-effects of music in our
lives.
Many of you share this
position with me. Parents
whose children are tied up in
music often feel it is more
trouble than it is worth, I
know. How many trips have
you made, taking them to
band or to lessons, getting all
their equipment together,

the feeling you have had? Can
you name it, wrap it up in a
bundle, touch it?
No, I guess not. I can’t. I
find it difficult to describe to
you the depth and scope of my
feelings this past weekend. I
realize my situation does not
parallel yours perhaps. But
the similarities are there, if
there is music in your life. It
has meant a lot to us. I know
many of you, and I have
shared some high moments
with you, because of music.
To those of you who are
followers and supporters of
the band program here, to
those of you who have shared
your children with Mr. T. and
I over the last six and a half
years, we say thank you. You
have earned the rewards I
hope you are reaping as your
kids are making music ... for
themselves, for you, and for
all who hear them.
This is a big week for the
F.O.C. and Peppers, with
Cherokee coming Friday
night for the final game, and
18th, following the policy of
having the performance on
the last school day, or as close
to that day as possible.

with the Jr. Miss Parade and
pageant this Saturday. The
parade is scheduled to step off
at 11:00 a.m., and the F.O.C.
will be there. The Peppers
will perform at the pageant
Saturday night in the gym.
Tricia Browning is con
ducting her portion of the
Band Booster Membership
Drive this week, as she is
sending out letters and
membership cards to her
Sparklers and Red Flames. It
is our hope that these parents,
along with the F.O.C. parents,
will join with others who
believe in this band program
in Forsyth County, to keep the
music goin’ round!
A closing thought. Some of
the F.O.C. and parents were
at the Civic Center Saturday
night. We got quite a thrill
from hearing some of Man
cini’s music that our own
youngsters have performed in
concert or on the field.
Perhaps they didn’t do it with
quite as much professionalism
as Saturday night’s orchestra,
drive. Mrs. Browning and Lon
Turner will have comments
on the Sparkler, Red Flame
and Flash of Crimson Bands,
and Band Director Turner
will be discussing concert
season and festival plans.
Parents whose children are
participating in Forsyth
County’s band program for
the first time this year will
find the Club meeting an
excellent opportunity to gain
insight into the entire picture
of the program, and to talk
with Mrs. Browning or
Turner. Parents of all band
members are urged to attend
and keep themselves in
formed on band matters.
Wright stresses the fact
that meetings are always kept
within an hour time limit
unless special matters
warrant more time.
Although the membership
drive is conducted at the
beginning of each school year,
anyone wishing to become a
Band Booster at any time
during the year may contact
Ed Wright, Louie Hansard, or
Lon Turner.
