Marriage Needs
Communications
Every man should have a
wife, because there are some
things that just cannot be
blamed on the government.
But getting married, and
staying happily married
thereafter, are two entirely
different things.
The most difficult thing in
marriage is communication.
Sometimes this starts even
before the couple takes the
walk down the aisle. The
ardent young lover says to his
girl friend, “Darling, will you
marry me?”
“But have you seen father
and mother?” asks the girl.
“Yes,” says the boy, “that
doesn’t make any difference.
I still love you!”
This couple has a communi
cation problem and they do
not even know it. After hear
ing Dr. Leslie Naveron of the
Mental Health Center read a
paper on adjustment and
communication in marriage, I
was aware that married cou
ples develop their own system
of communication which is by
voice, gestures and inflec
tions, which allow communi
cation that does not exist in
unhappy marriages.

happy marriage there is little
or no nonverbal communica
tion. If there is, it is turn-off or
even destructive communica
tion. The first reason they
identify as to why partners do
not listen to each other is they
do not want to hear each
other. The wife casually men
tions to her husband that she
just signed to go 50 rounds
with Muhammad Ali. and the
answer is, “Yes, dear.”
Why do marriages come to
this place of no communica
tion? It may be that one per
son has a “crystal ball syn
drome.” They expect the
other person to read their
minds. Let me illustrate. The
husband comes home tired,
and the wife has something
that has happened to her that
is exciting and she wants to
share it. She tells him part of
what she wants to communi
cate, and as she does so she
turns and finds that her hus
band is still sitting in the front
room with his head in the pa
per.
As the wife said to me: “So I
swallowed my pride and
walked out and told him the
rest.” I asked him about this
incident later, and he said,
“How was I to know that there
was more she wanted to tell
me?” She expected him to be
able to read her mind, and
this very minor point upset
the wife and caused buried
hostility.
Another type of lack of com
munication occurs when a
statement is met with silence
and is interpreted to indicate
agreement. Mother says to fa
ther that little Johnny should
do his homework rather than
playing sandlot ball that af
ternoon. Father is doing his
own thing and says nothing.
Japanese
Students
Praying
Japanese students place
prayer tokens on a Shinto
shrine in Tokyo, hoping for
aid from the gods with their
university entrance examina
tions.
of a university degree
can mean a lifetime of menial
jobs in Japan, so their prayers
are fervent.
What he is really thinking is
that it is a great afternoon and
the boy could do his home
work in the evening just as
well. Mother goes and gets the
boy and is very deeply hurt
that father did not back her up
in an agreement which was
never made. She is upset and
angry at father’s lack of coop
eratfbn.
No communication can take
place when a person does not
say what is on his mind. Many
women will not speak out and
ask for what they want most,
and they feel it is devalued in
some way if they do ask for it.
If she has to ask for flowers,
candy, affection, or some
thing else that she is eating
her heart for, it is no longer
desirable or worth the same
as if her husband or fiance
thought of it without being
asked. We are back to that
“crystal ball” thing again.
When we attack someone in
our communications and get
that DA quality in our voice,
this only brings on a defensive
counterattack, and the whole
thing becomes a verbal battle
because there is no communi
cation. Communication has to
be more than hostile verbal
darts.
One thing I use to help this
is to tape a conversation
which always seems to break
into argument, and then the
next week ask the couple what
they are doing to each other.
It is hotly denied that they are
using verbal darts, and then
the tape is played. This I do to
have them break down their
defensiveness, and get them
to admit that they have poor
communication habits. They
wave read flags at each other
and wonder why they fight.
Until they hear it, they don’t
believe it.
The most difficult thing one
has to deal with is the person
who reads into sentences
things that are not there, and
their active imagination adds
all the color and drama to
build up a full head of steam.
