People from all over en

CIVIL DEFENSE NOTES
Severe Weather And Treating Shock
Your Civil Defense
organization continues to
grow with the appointment of
Robert Lee Brogdon Jr. as the
Chief of the Communications
Unit. Bob has been active in
this field for many years and
is with the Bell Telephone
Company as plant assigner.
We hope to set up a radio
communications system on
the Civil Defense network in
the near future. We have
received our radio base
stations license and call
letters but do not have the
necessary radio equipment as
yet.
The Severe Weather
Warning System has been
organized with the ap
pointment of Mrs. Carol
Terry as the Chief of this unit.
A film showing the effects,
causes, and preventative
measures in connection with
tornados was obtained from
the Atlanta Weather Bureau
and shown to several groups
in the county including a boy
scout troop, a science class at
Forsyth County High School,
and some members of the
Forsyth County Sheriff’s
Department. This film will
also be used in the near future
to assist in the training of
Severe Storm Spotters.
Jake Moore, Chief of the
Fire and Demolition Unit,
reports that the Volunteer
Fire Department has 18 new
members to assist with the
newly established fire
stations. Two additional fire
trucks were obtained and put
into operation last week.
Roy Bridgeman, Chief of
the Law Enforcement and
Rescue Unit, reports that the
Forsyth County Emergency
Squad held its biweekly
meeting at the Civil Defense
Headquarters on October 24.
Bob Lady, Civil Defense
Director, reports that he, Ed
Terry, and Roy Bridgeman
will attend a two day Rescue
Instructors Course in

and 11, 1973.

The main signs of shock
include; cold and clammy
skin with beads of per

complaint by the victim of a

shaking chills, frequently,
nausea or vomiting, and
shallow breathing will be
observed.
Prevent shock by correc

Keep the victim lying down,
keep his airway open. If he
vomits, turn his head to the
side so that his neck is arched.
Elevate the victims legs if
there are no broken bones.
Keep his head lower than the
trunk of the body if possible.
Keep the victim warm if the
weather is cold or damp. Give
fluids (water, tea, coffee,
etc.) if the victim is able to
swallow, and reassure the
victim.
Never give the victim
alcoholic beverages. Do not
give fluids to unconscious or
semi-conscious persons. Do
not give fluids if abdominal
injury is suspected. The
prevention of shock should be
considered with every severe
injury and illness.
Since this is the time of year
for severe weather, the
following safety rules might
be of interest. In case of a
severe weather watch or

shelter, preferably in a storm
cellar. Stay away from

ACID SOIL
Watch for green slime! It’s
one of several signs that
indicate your yard plants aren’t
growing under the most favor
able conditions. When green
slime forms on containers or
soil, you’ve got very acid soil
or poor drainage with too
much water and fertilizer.
Experts suggest digging up the
soil and applying a little
ground limestone. Continue to
water the plants thoroughly
