Rapists May Get Off ‘Scot Free
By AUDREY GELLIS

If you’re caught with nar
cotics in New York state, you
can go to jail for life.
If you’re caught in the act of
rape, you can go scot free.
New York state’s tough new
drug law carries a mandatory
life sentence for drug pushing,
with a minimum of 25 years to
be served before parole can
be even considered.
Rape carries a sentence of 0
to 25 years, which means the

Football Not Best for Health Purposes
By IRWIN J. POLK, M.D.

Who needs football?
According to the figures,
football has replaced baseball
as the national game over the
past decade. It attracts more
admissions, has more players
and so forth. But from the
standpoint of health, who
needs football?
It’s not really exercise.
Football doesn’t provide the
kind of exercise that doctors
consider important. When a
doctor speaks of exercise, he
means the kind of activity
which increases the work of
the heart and the lungs.
The best exercise makes the
pulse rate go up and increases
the rate and deepness of
breathing. Running does this,
especially the longer dis
tances. Swimming does it,
too, and basketball, soccer,
hockey. Those sports provide
the kind of exercise that im

ACRYLIC CARPETS
The appearance and texture
of acrylic carpets is much like
wool carpets. Acrylics are re
known for their wearability,
resistance to soiling and stain
ing, color retention, resistance
to abrasion, dyeabilily, resil
iency, and cleanability. This
fiber is non-allergenic, mildew
proof, and moth proof.
Acrylic fiber is manufac
tured from a synthetic polymer
composed of at least 85 per
cent by weight of acrylonitrile,
which is a liquid derivative of
natural gas and air. Sounds
like a lot of big words, but it
all boils down to the fact that
acrylic carpets are high quality.

Which crime do you think
the men who govern New
York state wish to eliminate?
The district attorney’s of

York city was recently in

confessed rapist-burglars
were allowed to “plea bar

robbery only (there was no

football?
A pro football game lasts an
hour. In that time, each team
makes about 70 plays, each
play lasting a few seconds.
But since the players are spe
cialists either in offense or de
fense, each player plays only
half the ball game at the most.
Since there are frequent sub
stitutions, each player may
get to play no more than 20 or
so plays adding up to just a
few minutes of playing time.
With the pros at least, there
isn’t much exercise in playing
football.
How about practice? The
average football play is run in
a distance of about 40 yards.
The players can cover this in
about five seconds. So in prac
tice, too, the effort is toward a
very short burst of intensive

problem of corroboration be

witnessed the rape). Instead
of combined sentences of 10 to
30 years, one man got only one
to 10, the other two received 8
to 25. Chief Assistant District
Attorney for the Bronx Sey
mour Rotker told me that he
considers robbery a more
serious crime than rape.
“Rape is just a sexual
abberaiion, but robbery is a
crime of violence,” he said.
This permissiveness toward
rape, however, does not ema
activity. This is not a big help
toward developing cardiopul
monary reserve. But the
practice may include several
laps around the field: that’s
exercise. And those laps may
teach the players something
about conditioning.
But do football players ever
learn about conditioning?
Each summer the sports col
umns are filled with stories of
players who turn up at train
ing camps woefully “out of
shape.” If they’ve learned
anything about conditioning
in their football careers, they
certainly don’t show it.
Perhaps the saddest thing
about football for high-school
and college kids is that it
doesn’t give them any activity
to take into later life that will
help them stay in shape.
One of the problems with
football, and with other team
sports as well, is that it takes
22, or 18, or 10 men to make up
a game. And when in later life
can you get that many people
together on a regular basis for
a physical fitness session?
Football players don’t seem
to learn much about condi
tioning during their careers.
They don’t take away with
them the basic principles or
opportunities to keep in
shape. If you doubt this, check
the profile of any of the pro
football coaches as they ap
pear on the TV screen.
Football and the other team
sports are an outgrowth of
physical education programs
in high schools and colleges.
The object of these programs
is to teach physical fitness, to
give students an appreciation
of the importance of physical
nate from legislators and
prosecutors; they merely im
plement societal attitudes
which are sanctified by scien
tific authority and dissemi
nated by the media.
Ralph Garofalo is a psy

of rapists at the Center for Di

in Bridgewater, Mass.
In an interview with News

the Aug. 20,1973, issue, Garo

Perhaps our educators have
taken their eyes off the ball,
have mistaken financial bene

Make Centerpiece
For Thanksgiving
About this time of year it’s
nice to look back on our year
and count our many blessings.
I think you will find this cen
terpiece is in keeping with
that thought and hope you will
find it fun to make.
You will need two milk car
tons or two sheets of 14-inch
by-22-inch posterboard. You
will also need paper to cover
your cardboard base, card
board, corks, wooden beads,
masking tape, glue, scissors,
scrap material, ruler, pencil
and felt tip pens.
To start the Thanksgiving
centerpiece, cut a piece of
cardboard 9 by 12 inches. This
is the base. Cover this with ei
ther brown wrapping paper,
material or metalic wrapping
paper (I chose the last). Any
of these will do nicely.
There are two ways to make
the church. Easiest is to use
two milk cartons (1-quart
size). Cover one with metalic
paper and glue where you de
sire on your base. Cut the oth
er to four inches, cover with
metalic paper and glue to the
base in back of the steeple.
Add the roofs, following direc
cases the rapist’s behavior is
merely an extreme manifes
tation of the normal male sex
drive. “I don’t think there’s a
man worth his salt,” the psy
chologist said, “who hasn’t
seen some chick walking by
and wanted her.”
Garofalo sees the rapist as
different only because he
loses all sight of moral or le
gal considerations in the pur
suit of his desires. “In many
cases these guys end up feel
ing really sorry. They realize
they were dealing with some
team sports, perhaps it would
be better to stress individual
sports tennis, swimming,
track, squash, gymnastics,
fencing. Perhaps we should
stress learning to play for the
team rather than with the
team. Individual sports have
tions below.
To make a steeple of poster
board, cut a piece of 11 by 11
inches, divide this into four
2Vfe-inch panels and leave one
inch panel for overlap. Score
the side lines for easier fold
ing. Fold the four sections and
hold together with masking
tape. Cover the steeple with
metalic foil, then cut up Vz
inch on the bottom corner,
fold under and glue to base.
(Fig. 1).
Measure another piece of
posterboard with four 2Vfe-inch
panels. Measure the two out
side panels to be inches
long and the two inside panels
to measure 6 inches long. Be
sure to put the extra inches on
the opposite ends to fold over
for bottom sections as in Fig.
2. Fold and seal with masking
tape. Cover with paper and
glue to base in back of the
steeple.
To make the roof for the
church, cut a piece of poster
board four by six inches, fold
so the roof is four inches long
and three inches high, cover
with paper and attach with
masking tape as in Fig. 1.
overwhelming impulse,” he
said.
Some questions for Mr.
Garofalo: If a burglar ripped
him off, would that mean the
miscreant was so tempted by
material goods he lost all
sight of moral and legal con
siderations? Suppose some
women, outraged by Garo
falo’s remarks, beat him up.
Should they plead “over
whelming impulse” in court.
And how does Garofalo ex
plain sociologist Menachim
Amir’s study of forcible rape
the added attraction of giving
the kids something they can
carry over into later life as a
means of keeping in shape.
Who needs football? The TV
networks and the advertisers.

By creating a medical and

What can we women do?
First, learn to protect our.
selves. The best advice I have
read to date comes from “Our
Bodies, Ourselves,” written
by the Boston Women’s
Health Collective and pub

($2.95).
Secondly, we must make it
clear to every man in public
office that unless he’s part of
the solution to rape, he’s part
of the problem.
