Deer
Harvest
‘Sub-par’
The first Saturday of
November is the traditional
opening of firearms deer
season for hunters in most
areas of the state. This
singular day was celebrated
last weekend by thousands of
flourescent orange clad
hunters, each seeking to bag a
buck.
Initial reports are still
sketchy, but all areas of the
state report a large hunter
turn-out. On the other hand,
hunter success is reported
generally as fair and below
normal in some areas. This
sub-par harvest is at
tributable to the same con
ditions which prompted the
large turn-out warm, clear
weather conditions.
A mild fall has maintained
summer-like conditions and
apparently delayed the
rutting season in many parts
of the state. This mating
period normally results in
increased deer activity,
particularly on the part of the
bucks, who are on the move
looking for does during the
rut. The extended period of
mild weather also affects the
deer population generally.
A long period of unchanging
weather often makes the deer
population look sparse, since
the deer may not travel much.
A sudden weather change
often puts the deer on the
move and improves hunting.
So, if your opening day was
not a spectacular success,
cheer up. Good hunting may
be only around the
barometer.
