Make Your Own
Book Covering
“Live! Read!” This snappy
slogan will be seen in the chil
dren’s section of public li
braries all across the country
between Nov. 12 and 18.
Since 1919 the Book Week
Council, with national head
quarters in New York City,
has set aside certain weeks
for particular kinds of books
to be emphasized and brought
to public attention This is a
separate observance not to be
confused with Library Week
in April which reminds read
ers of all books.
No doubt your local or
school library will plan extra
activities around materials
supplied them by the National
Children’s Book Council.
These have been chosen to
have special appeal to young
people.
You can partake in Book
Week by showing your librari
an a very special volume, one
that you have both written
and published all by yourself.
There’s Recipe
For Everything
Household hint: Every
month or so put a coat of wax
on your yardstick if you want
to keep it nice.
We are rapidly running out
of year and the new almanacs
are coming out. Filled with
weather predictions, horo
scopes, household hints and
recipes for making grand
ma’s lye soap.
I have been thinking of
compiling an almanac of my
own one of these years. Filled
with hundreds of little facts
and pieces of homey advice. I
would also toss in a lot of
weird recipes sent to me over
the years by kind, but unusu
al, people.
If nothing else, it would
clean out a couple of my file
cabinets.
“To get rid of warts, cut
raw potato in half and rub
over surface. Say three times,
‘Go away, go away, go away.’
Bury potato and wart will dis
appear shortly.”
That comes to me from
Billings, Mont., and is a fair
example of the kind of mail
you get when you are in the
column writing dodge.
I would pass all these tidbits
along just the way they came
to me. Without any firm guar
antees.
As for horoscopes, I think I
could make them up as well as
the next fellow.
“Today’s perceptions for
libra people: Watch it!”
An Arizona woman recently
sent me her great uncle’s
“Snake bite prevention for the
Drinking Man.” I could in
clude this sort of thing in my
almanac:
“Drink one half pint of
whiskey upon rising. Keep eye
peeled for snakes throughout
the day. Drink one half pint of
whiskey before retiring. Re
peat daily in case snakes ap
pear.”
The woman swears her un
de has followed this practice
for more than 20 years and
has never once been bitten by
a snake.
Weather forecast: For the
hurricane belt (during hurri
cane season), watch out for
hurricanes.
A woman recently sent me a
booklet of recipes compiled
several years ago by an Oma
ha, Neb., kindergarten class.

Aside from the “manu
script” you choose, which can
be your own written work or a
collection such as a scrap
book or photo album, the main
material needed will be wall
paper.
Most paint stores are gener
ous in giving away outdated
wallpaper samples, or per
haps there are scraps from a
decorating project in your
own home. Once you get a
piece 14 by 20 inches in size
you will need tagboard or
lightboard 12 by 18 inches.
Place the wallpaper flat on
a table, wrong side up. Then
lay the tagboard evenly on
top. The next step is to cut the
corners of the wallpaper at
right angles about one inch to
ward the center where it
meets the corner of the tag
board.
Fold all the wallpaper edges
over the tagboard. Cut off the
protruding edge of wallpaper
on the long sides, and then cut
I showed them to our food
editor but she said she was
afraid she might be sued if she
printed any of them. How
ever, after looking them over
closely, I think I could use a
few in the almanac:
“Upsidedown cake by Joe
Welge: Four peaches, four
pounds of flour, three pounds
of water, six pounds of sugar.
Get the beater out and add
two eggs and mix all the
things together. Bake in the
oven until 5 o’clock. If it isn’t
done, bake until 6 o’clock.”
Sound yummy?
“Thanksgiving turkey by
Rocky Mills: Three turkeys,
some sage and some raisins,
14 chickens. Mix up some
beans and bacon and make
bean soup. Bake your turkey
three or four minutes. After
you’re done eating, eat some
dessert.”

the overlapping ones at an
angle on the short side. This
allows the folds to lie flat, and
is called a mitered edge.
Put white glue on the inside
of the folded edges, working
with the long sides first to
make the fold permanent. Use
paper clips to keep it firm and
smooth while drying. Do the
same after with the short
sides.
Trim a 12-by-18 piece of col
ored cons'ruction paper about
three-quarters of an inch on
one long and short side. Glue
this on top of the tagboard.
Place all three thicknesses
under heavy weight until dry.
It will then be as smooth as if
only one piece was used, but
much sturdier. Folded in half
and decorated on the outside,
your book cover will be simi
lar to professionally made
ones.
