Yule Paintings
Are Frustrating
Currier and Ives have con
tributed to our holiday frus
tration.
TTiey are responsible for
those turn-of-the-century lith
ographs showing old-time
family get-togethers at holi
day time. Norman Rockwell
didn’t help much either. Their
works are full of gay home
comings and simple plea
sures.
Pondering a Rockwell print,
depicting a family saying
grace over a humble table
spread with farm-style serv
ing bowls and a golden brown
turkey, my daughter re
marked that the mother of the
family looked a lot older than
most mothers.
“No,” I corrected her. “She
was probably the same age,
but she didn’t fight it.”
Her gray hair was done
simply, and her face was
without false eyelashes and
other barricades against the
march of time. One Currier
and Ives print is a snow-filled
Loneliness Rides a Wheelchair
Dear John: I would like to
answer the lady who tried to
give Mrs. L. advice.
She is very fortunate, she
can count her blessings, it’s
not a matter of the mind being
cheerful. Being lonely is hor
rible.
I just lost my husband two
years ago. I am in a wheel
chair, having had polio when
young and now arthritis. How
can you sit all alone in a
wheelchair in a small house
and think of roses and sun
shine? What good does that
do 7
I could tell many things of
how I’ve been forgotten, but
that lady probably wouldn’t
believe it. Even to taking a
taxi, I go by myself. Some cab
drivers just don’t want to
bother with a wheelchair
and on Social Security I think
25 cents is about all I could or
should give them in tips.
Maybe she thinks I should
stay home and think rosy
dreams. I’d like to see her try
it, mop up and do everything
with a wheelchair. As for se
nior citizens, the local club
was to pick me up, but I sup
pose my chair posed a prob
lem to them.
I can help myself in and out
of cars, at home, anywhere,
only I can’t walk much. I have
no children, no brothers or
sisters. The nearest relatives
are cousins, who like every
one else, live their fast reck
less lives. I have one friend,
God bless her. She does all she
can, when she can, but her
work and family come first. I
also have a cousin who lives 18
miles away, but when I’m in
need she and her husband
come.
How to Sew
Dress Trim
"I would like to know how
they sew braid or trim on
ready-to-wear dresses so that
stitches never show on the
right side. Can we do it, too?
How?” - Mrs. Earl High
By hand, mostly. I don’t
know how they do it on ready
to-wear (their methods have
nothing to do with us home
sewers) but the only way I
know to do a neat, invisible
job is to work with a half
back-stitch from the under
neath side of the fabric. If you
are working on a collar, for
example, be sure to attach the
trim before attaching the un
dercollar.

The windows are lighted
and in the open doorway
stands an overweight mother
welcoming a sleighfull of gift

“Gee," said my daughter.
“That’s what you call a real,
old-time Christmas. Right’’"
"Right,” I sighed, and I
wished, somehow, that it was
possible io re-create that
scene today. Instead, today's
artist may record our typical
holiday gathering like this:
The canvas will be crowded
with look-alike homes
jammed together on one
street which is clogged with
cars trying to find parking
places.
Overhead, the sky is gray
with smog and on the roof of
one house is not Santa, but a
man putting up 20 yards of
Christmas lights. He is hurry
ing. At the open door stands

loneliness and being alone
go hand in hand. Regardless
of what anyone says, they are
different.
If this lady ever finds her
self all alone in this world,
helpless and no one to lean on,
then she can talk about God’s
mental laws.
May the day never come,
when she feels unwanted, and
lonely as Mrs. L. and myself.
I could write a book on how
rude people, neighbors and
friends can be. I’m not bitter,
I’ve learned to expect this. I
never ask anyone to do any
thing for me. If they do it I
know it’s coming from their
heart.
Convey my thoughts to Mrs.
L. If she’d care to write to me
I’d appreciate that. But any
one who thinks sitting alone
thinking of roses and sunshine
will right things they better
count their blessings. Mrs.

Dear Mrs. F.A.8.: I’m sure
a lot of people feel just as you
do. I will be glad to forward
your letter.
Dear John: I am a lonely

Dear Mrs. Kinser: I am in
terested in making the quilt of
doubleknit scraps as de
scribed in a letter from Wan
da Cramer. Would it be possi
ble to get a pattern? What col
ors were used? I would have
to buy most of the material
new. Should the pieces be put
together by hand or machine?
Mrs. Ewald Pliefke
For Shirley, Mrs. Pliefke
and all the other readers who
asked, here are the instruc
tions :
Cut two-inch squares from
the knit. Put nine squares
(three to a row) together for
each block. Arrange the
squares in each block for an
attractive design (use your
own unique ideas that’s
what makes a quilt so beauti
ful).
The tiny squares should be
put together by hand, I think,
to prevent their being
stretched by the machine.
However, the large “nine
blocks” could be machine
stitched together, if you are
careful to match all seams
and you don’t stretch as you
sew.
The color is up to you ... go
soft with tones of brown. Go
daring with shades of red. Or
be patriotic and use red, white
and blue. (If you are using
scraps, your colors are al
ready determined for you.)
Good luck. I’ll be waiting to
hear how yours turns out.
QUICK STITCH: “Knit

Will Bobby Fischer
Play Latin or Red?
At last, a dividend from
Uncle Sam’s possession of a
world chess champion. One
quarter-final of the Candi
dates Matches (to pick a chal
lenger for Bobby Fischer) will
be played in this country be
tween Russia’s Victor Korch
noi and Brazil’s 21-year-old
tornado, Henrique Me eking.
The other matches will pit
America’s Robert Byrne
against Boris Spassky; Hun
gary’s Lajos Portisch versus
ex-champ Tigran Petrosian;
and two Russians, Anatoly
Karpov and Lev Polugaiev
sky. (The latter’s game, be
low, was judged one of the
best of the 1968 Olympiad in
Lugano, Switzerland.)
In London, where you can
get a bet on how many hairs
you have left on your head,
odds are being given that
Fischer won’t even show up to
play the official challenger.
Since his appearance on the
Bob Hope television show af
ter the Iceland match,
Fischer has virtually dropped
out of sight. He was supposed
ly seen last in Pasadena,
Calif., but the smog there is so
thick you need high-powered
searchlights to find anyone at
high noon.

Did you know we rent & sell
hospital equipment of all types?
The Russians are trying to
smoke Fischer out by public
forgiveness for past discour
tesies.
“Let us wish the new world
champion good health,”
toasted the veteran grand
master Salo Flohr in “Sport in
the USSR.” “God bless him
with a good wife!” a sur
prising confession of faith
from an atheistic society. But
maybe there it’s considered
that, when a chessplayer
faces life, he needs all the help
he can get.
Flohr noted that Fischer is
the first bachelor to win the
world chess crown an inter
esting premise for contrivers
of betting systems. Because
Bobby is indeed the only
bachelor champ, do the gods
now decree he remain the
only one? Or, now that he
broke the ice, do those other
singletons Karpov and
Mecking stand equal
chances of duplicating his
achievement?
The odds-makers favor
Petrosian over Portisch, but
he has never yet beaten the
Hungarian. If there’s a first
time for everything, does it
happen now when the cham
pionship chips are down?
mw AJr
The Russians downgraded
Spassky in favor of Karpov,
and history shows that when
the Soviets downgrade their
own, they stay down. But can
Boris still beat Robert Byrne
who, in his mid-forties, is
playing better chess than he
ever did in his younger days?
Most intriguing of all can
the world of chess find happi
ness with two Bobby
Fischers? This will be the
question if Fischer’s chal
lenger turns out to be young
Mecking, whose legendary
temper could, by contrast,
easily get Bobby elected “The
Most Cooperative Personality
of the Year.”
After looking over the field,
one cynic predicted that
Fischer’s next opponent will
be Jim Slater, the English
chess-playing financier,
whose offer to double the
jackpot at Iceland was cred
ited with catapulting Bobby to
Reykjavik at the last crucial
minute. The logic is that
Slater is the only chessplayer
who could meet Fischer’s fi
nancial demands.
I don’t believe it. My feeling
is that Fischer’s next chal
lenger will be Howard
Hughes.
