Dear Dorothy:
After years of marriage,
my husband and I are having
much trouble. Perhaps it’s a
lack of faith, or maybe a loss
of interest in each other’s ac
tivities. I used to value my
marriage for the security I
felt in having money, a nice
home, cars, etc., but now I
wonder. What is the price you
have to pay for a decent mar
riage?
W.P.
Dear W.P.:
When you put a value on
something as invaluable as
marriage, it automatically
becomes valueless.
The combination of your
forward slant, lack of pres
sure, upswing endings, and
other strokes, keeps you kit
tenish. You love to be petted.

Dear Mrs. Tobin: Sometime
ago I read in the Sentinel the
question from the young lady
who asked about being ex
cused from the table when she
was dining with her boy
friend. My son wants to know
what he should say in the
same situation. Should he
leave the table when the girl
does? Tim’s Mother
Dear Mother: He should
also say, “Will you please ex
cuse me?” If the girl leaves
first he should rise and pull
her chair away. He should
NOT leave with her. As soon
as she is out of sight, he may
leave for the men’s room.
Dear Mrs. Tobin: Is it nec
essary to tip counter girls
when I lunch on a sandwich
and a cup of coffee? Sue in
Chicago.
Dear Sue: Why not? The
girls behind a counter try to
please as hard as those in a
dining room. A quarter will do
nicely.
Dear Mrs. Tobin: I am a
; frequent house guest of
: friends around the country. I
always take my hostess a gift.
Now people tell me this isn’t
required. Right or wrong?
; Florence B.
* Dear Florence: It isn’t re
;quired, but don’t you think it’s
a nice gesture? I do.
; Dear Mrs. Tobin: Last night
:i burned a hole in a friend’s
[linen table cloth. I’m sick
[about it. What can I do?

> Dear C.J.: Make every ef
fort to get the cloth and have it
: rewoven. If the hostess won’t

To have a good marriage

Into Knots
Dear Dorothy:
I graduated from college
this year, and I dread the fu
ture. Everyone tells me it’s
just the idea of being on my
own now, but I really can’t
buy that. I put myself through
school and know the responsi
bilities of life and the impor
tance of being independent.
But each day I find myself
tied into tighter knots and un
able to think clearly.
H.D.
Dear H. D.:
You’re letting your emo
tions do your thinking. So your
mind is overheated.
You are an intelligent per
son, seen in the well devel

dom of thinking, however, has
been inhibited by strict regi
mentation, seen in the retrac

your writing.
You are trying to master
yourself with self-control,
seen in the consistent curved t
crossings. Your whole pur
pose is so directed toward
yourself and how you can be
come a perfect person, that it
has iost its force toward
achievement. Self-control is
normal, natural, and com
mendable, but you are al
ready to conservatively con
trolled, as seen in the tight
ness of your writing, that you
can’t even budge. And the
knot of tension pulls tighter
and tighter.
Your mind is well equipped
to produce the ideas and in

tenseness can soon burn it out.
So, for effective thinking and
planning, be sure to supply
yours with the coolant of shar
ing ideas with friends, mixed
with plenty of laughter.
Take your work seriously
not yourself.
