Use the Gifts
God Gave You
W.R. Callaway
God’s call and His love goes
out to all the world. “God so
loved the world (everyone in
it)”. His love and His call is
extended to every person in
the world. To everyone who
heeds the call of God is ex
pected to use the talents
(gifts) for God’s glory.
Everyone has gifts. Everyone
is unique in his gifts, no two
are alike. The gifts are from
God. No one has anything
except what God has given to
him or her. The gifts we share
include spiritual services,
such as teachings, preachings
and leading; personal
ministries, such as comfort
and encouragement, and also
material possessions, so that
no one might lack anything.
I remember vividly sitting
by my father in the First
Baptist Church of Athens and
hearing the sermons and
sharing in the worship ser
vices. On one particular
Sunday as we left the church
and started toward home he
put his hand on my shoulder
and said “I pray that you will
preach the gospel of Christ
some day.” He hoped that I

would use the gift that God
had given me. Everyone has
some gift that God alone has
given him or her. The church
is the body of Christ because
it draws its life from Him and
exists to serve his purposes.
I would like to be able to put
my hand on the shoulders of
our fourteen grandchildren
and pray that each one may
use the gifts, talents and
abilities that God has given
them for the glory of God and
the good of humanity. I would
like to pray for everyone that
I have taught and everyone
that I have contacted during
my ministry; and our prayers
go out to everyone in the
world. Your gifts and talents
are given to you by God. Give
all that you have back to him
in service.
Prayer is an open door to all
the resources of God. We read
the Bible to let God speak to
us. We pray to speak to God.
When we put them together
there is communication. If
one is an effective witness,
prayer goes before his every
effort. Time spent in the
presence of the Lord will give
the witness what he needs to
speak in the presence of man.
In every commission Jesus
promised his presence: What
a source for the witness! The
witness never goes alone. The
task is impossible without
Jesus’ presence, but with him
all things are possible.
The Jews avoided the
Samaritans. They would have
no dealings with them. Jesus
told his disciples specifically
to witness to the Samaritans.
None was to be excluded. Do
we witness to those on the
other side of the railroad
track. Do we witness to the
Negro? to the Indian? to the
‘down and outs’?

son who has any kind of au

relating to authority figures,
but when those persons are
unfair or too severe the result
can be a feeling of hostility to

Basically as children we are
afraid of such people, and the
result is that an adult may go
through life with the childish
feeling of trying to get even
with his parents.
People who are afraid of au

For listening ears thy voice

For yielded tongue thy love to

For open eyes thy word to

For loving heart thy will to

For Christ who came from

For the cross and his

Christian Is ‘Christ-Like’
By JACK SIMONS
The word Christian means
“Christ-Like”. In 1 Peter 2:21
we are told to— “Follow His
Steps”, inferring we walk in
the footprints of Jesus. The
goal of every Christian should
be to be as much like Christ as
possible for he is our example
and in his likeness we are to
be an example of him to the
world.
It is said the caterpillar or
a moth becomes like the
color of the leaf upon which it
feeds. In this way its color
indicates the character of
food it eats. If we would be
like Christ we must feed on
him (See Jn 6:47-58). Our
moral character will always
manifest the color of our
mental food. Christ lived upon
the word of God his Father,
and so maintained a life that
was like God—and he was
God with us!
If we would be a disciple of
Christ we must come after

some time needs to learn that
authority people are not their
parents and there is no need to
feel and react as children.
A good portion of my
pastoral counseling comes
down to this basic fact: Every
person has the responsibility
for his own life, and most of
those in authority are willing
to help us if we get the chip off
our shoulder and attempt to
cooperate.

when as a child we all felt

obedience on fear.
