Georgia Educators Seek
Higher Pay and Benefits
Georgia educators voted
last week to seek higher
salaries, improved
retirement benefits and
statewide kindergarten for all
five-year olds when the
General Assembly convenes
in January.
The 1,208 delegates,
representing more than 50,000
Georgia educators, decided
upon a legislative program at
the annual fall Represen
tative Assembly of the
Georgia Association of Ed
ucators in Warner Robbins.
Delegates also voted to hold
an all-member referendum in
the spring on an important
internal matter, unification
with the National Education
Association (NEA).
Currently, educators may
join GAE or NEA or both. If
the all-member vote is a
decision to unify with NEA,
membership in one of the
professional organizations
will automatically ensure
membership in the other.
The 12 percent salary in
crease the delegates voted to

will appeal to your sweet
tooth.
Come by the bake sale—the
girls are sure you’ll find
something you’ll really enjoy.

seek in the assembly will
raise the starting teacher
salary from $6,647 to $7,444.
In the area of retirement,
the educators will seek a
program which would allow
teachers to retire after 30
years of service, regardless of
age, with maximum possible
benefits.
Other needs educators will
present to the General
assembly include lower pupil
teacher ration in grades 4
through 7 and statewide
health insurance for all
educators.
Delegates also voted to
pursue six items which do not
require funding from the state
legislature. They are (1)
accountability, requiring
State and local boards of
education to be held ac
countable for establishing
educational goals and ob
jectives and for reporting to
the public the extent to which
those goals have been met,
(2) fair dismissal law,
guaranteeing educators due
process of law in contract
renewal cases, (3) opposition
to the National Teacher
Examination (NTE) as a
criterion for upgrading
certificates, receiving salary
supplements or for
promoting, retaining,
demoting or recruiting, (4)
developing standards for non
public schools to assure that
all Georgia school-children
are guaranteed standardized,
quality education, (5)
granting legal status to
student teachers, and (6)
supporting the Equal Rights
Amendment.
Other needs not ranked in
order of importance include:
