House Sellers
Have Own Talk
By ANN RUDY

When you are selling one
house and looking for another,
you discover a whole new vo
cabulary. You might even call
it a whole new language.
Ihe natives who speak this
language most fluently are
found in real estate offices
and open houses. They are
distinguished by their enthu
siasm for dwellings of any
sort.
Their speech habits differ
from ours in that they don’t
use such words as small, in
adequate or old. Anything un
der 900 square feet is cozy, if
there are two bedrooms and
you wanted three, it has build
on possibilities and houses
built in 1904 aren’t old
they’re older.
The natives never say ser

Plans for a Pony
The youngest chick has en
tered a contest to win a pony.
She is convinced she will
win. (And if my luck doesn’t
get better, she probably will.)
1 said: “Where in the world
would we keep a pony?”
She said: “It could live in
the back yard.”
She did a little horseback
riding this summer, and now
she almost HAS to have a
horse.
I said: “Well, don’t count on
winning too much. There are
probably thousands of other
kids trying to get their claws
on that same pony.”
She said: “SOMEbody has

She said: “If I win, I hope

Horses are not so common
these days. For many of to
day’s children, a horse seen
on a rider in the country is an
event.
“Hey, look over there! A
horsey!”
However, I go back to the
days when horses were on the
streets. Not clear back to the
horse and buggy days, but the
man who sharpened knives
had one to pull his wagon. The
fruit and vegetable wagon
was pulled by a horse.
And now and then a few
gypsy horses drawn wagons
would go by. (How do gypsies
get around now? In station
wagons? VW buses?)
In fact, I spent an entire
summer on horesback. In a
high, hidden valley in the
Ozarks of Arkansas.
The children back there
my cousins had never seen
a car until the day we pulled
up.
We rode horseback to the
store. Two, sometimes three,
kids per horse. And we traded
eggs for groceries.
(I mean, this was pretty
DEEP into the Ozarks.)

When Is Best Breeding Time
By DR. STAN JACKSON
Q. I have a Great Dane that
should be in heat soon. We
have a mate for her but what I
am seriously concerned about
is when should they mate
before, in between or after her
menstruation period. I know
that it is better to let nature
take its course, but the mate
we have selected is in another
city and we want to make sure
we make a worthwhile trip. In
other words when is the prop
er time for introducing the
two of them and how would we
know what the signs are?
J.Y., Cincinnati.
A. The average heat period,
or season, for dogs is approxi
mately three weeks. This usu
ally occurs about every six
months in most female dogs.
Although dogs are fertile for
most of this three-week peri
od, the optimum fertility is in
the middle of the cycle or
about 10 days after the men
strual flow, or bleeding, be
gins. At this time the color of
the discharge changes from
red to straw color.
To increase the probability
of pregnancy, I suggest you
breed your dog on the ninth,
eleventh and thirteenth day
after the first signs of heat
(blood discharge) takes
place. This will usually coin
cide with the color change of
the menstrual flow.
Q. Our black cocker spaniel
has ear fungus. We have doc
tored him most of the year
with drops and cleansing but
it continues. Is there anything
new we can do? The problem
is a serious one. G.M., Os
good, Ind.
A. Fungus infections of the
ears can be an annoying and
prolonged irritation in dogs
with long ears. The key to
control of fungal ear infec
tions is proper hygiene that
is, routine cleaning of the ears
with alcohol to prevent build
up of the fungus and a clinical
infection. Fungal infections
are quite resistant to treat
ment, as you’ve found out. Be
sure you are using the proper
ear medication; most com
mon preparations are a com
bination of cortisone and anti
biotics which are excellent for
many ear inflammations or
infections, but not specific for
fungus infections.
