Does Pill Effect
Any Pregnancies?
Q. How dangerous is it to
take birth-control pills during
the first few weeks of preg
nancy? It used to be thought
safe. Is it still? pis happened
to a friend of mine and she is
worrying about an injury to
the baby.
A. Every now and then a
woman discovers she is preg
nant and still taking the birth
control {Mils. She may have
forgotten to take a few pills,or
she may be one of the very
small minority who has ovu
lated even though taking the
pills. So far it cannot be said
that the small amounts of
these particular hormones
cause any congenital defects.
DES ( diethylstilbestrol),
the synthetic, artificial, hor
mone that seems to have pro
duced abnormalities in the fe
male offspring of mothers
who took it to keep from spon
taneously aborting, is not
used in birth-control pills. It is
used in the “morning-after”
pill and is only given in specif
ic cases at a specific time

Almost everything that a
pregnant woman takes into
her body is being blamed for
congenital effects. In fact, al
most everything a pregnant
woman does seems suspect
these days. Sometimes it
looks like we are back to the
days when a pregnant woman
feared she would have a one
legged baby if she saw a one
legged man, or find a red
mark on her baby if she saw a
fire!
