that based on insurance com
pany life expectancy statis
tics, you may shorten your life
up to 14.4 minutes for every
cigarette you smoke. Addi
tionally, if you’re among the
almost 20 per cent of girls who
smoke every day by age 18,
“kicking the habit” could
make a crucial difference in
your future baby’s health and
and might even save its life.
The drying and irritating
effects of cigarette smoke on
the delicate bronchial mucous
membrane have been blamed
as the major cause of chronic
bronchitis. John K. Shirey,
M.D., points out that habitual
cigarette smokers tend to
have chronic bronchitis.
Smoking has also been im
plicated as a major cause of
emphysema, an illness which
may leave you literally gasp
ing for breath for years. If you
catch emphysema in the early
stages and quit smoking en
tirely, experts say symptoms
may be alleviated and the
progress of the illness may be
halted or slowed.
Are smoking and ulcers
connected? Daniel Horn,
Ph.D., Director of the De
partment of Health, Educa
tion and Welfare’s National
Clearinghouse for Smoking
and Health, reports that
deaths from complications in
peptic ulcer patients are
strikingly higher in smokers
of both sexes than in non
smokers. He goes on to say
that “cigarette smoking ap
pears to reduce the effective
ness of standard ulcer treat
ment and to slow the rate of
ulcer healing.”
Heart specialist Lawrence
Lamb, M.D., notes that to
bacco use may lead to the de
velopment of a circulatory
disturbance known as Buer
ger’s Disease, characterized
by severe pain and cramps in
the legs. If you have this ill
ness and stop smoking, the
condition will in many cases
regress. If you persist in
puffing, gangrene may set in
and force you to have an
amputation.
If you smoke very much,
you probably know that to
bacco can give you yellow
stains on your teeth, leave you
with a bad taste in your mouth
and cause bad breath. Den
tists now suspect a connection
between tobacco use and
periodontal disease, including
gum swelling, and losing teeth
early. A Public Health Ser
vice report indicates that the
mouths of young smokers are
less healthy than those of non
smokers 15 years their senior.
Reports indicate that
“smoking mothers appear to
have a greater number of un
successful pregnancies due to
stillbirth and neonatal death
(death in newborn babies).”
On an average, the babies of
women who smoke during
pregnancy weigh less than
babies of nonsmoking
mothers. There is also an in
creased incidence of congeni
tal heart disease among these
“smokers’ babies.”
According to a study cited
in an issue of “Smoke
Signals,” which covered 2,000
human pregnancies, “At least
one in five of the smoking
mothers who lost their babies
would undoubtedly have had a
successful birth if she were a
nonsmoker.”
Finally, a leading medical
authority says smoking may
help wrinkle your face. He al
so notes that many individu
als who stop smoking notice
an increase in their sexual
drive.

Our Dog Sugar
Just Watched!
By ANN RUDY
Copley News Service
Whenever anybody tells me
they are going to buy a dog to
keep watch over them I think
of “Sugar,” the cocker span
iel we had when I was growing
up. Sugar was as sweet as his
name.
I mean, he was a nice dog to
pat, but I wouldn’t want him
to watch my sister. And he
didn’t.
But my mother was under
the impression that Sugar was
a watchdog and thought that
he, in her absence, immedi
ately took his place by the
front door and stood, fangs
bared, awaiting any would-be
intruders.
Why she thought this I’ll
never know, because the truth
was he slept so much a lot of
people thought he was a rug.
He was the kind of watchdog
that would do just that if any
body broke in: watch.
Much of his lethargy had to
do with his weight. Just as my
mother refused to recognize
that he was no watchdog, she
also failed to see that he was
playing her for a sucker when
it came to food.
During the 12 years we had
Sugar I don’t think mother ate
one guilt-free meal. “Look at
those eye,” she would say,
glancing down at Sugar who
had stationed himself woe
fully beside her dining chair,

Sperm Freeze

Q. Is it true that frozen
sperm cells can be kept in

A. Whether sperm cells can
be unfrozen and become as
motile as before seems to de
pend upon the kind of sperm
cells that were frozen in the
first place. Whether or not
these motile ones can fertilize
an ovum and produce a preg

“I don’t care what you say,
that dog is hungry.”
Actually, he was sleepy
from having consumed a can
of dog food 10 minutes before.
“Don’t let him con you,
mama,” we kids would say,
“He isn’t hungry, he’s faint
from the walk to his food
dish.”
But mother, like a middle
aged Huckleberry Finn,
would secretly drop him mor
sels from her plate. As a re
sult of this practice, my moth
er’s figure remained trim and
Sugair’s went to the dogs.
Arid even though he never
took a more aggressive action
in his life than to eat the mail
for the tasty glue on the enve
lopes, mother always referred
to him as “our watchdog.”
She felt a lot safer that way
and rather than disillusion
her, we kids decided to let
sleeping dogs lie.

“The games are played at
the same time that I usually
work on my hobbies, take a

“Since I bought a book on

not agree with the points he
made, you might attend the
ball game of your choice
whether you happen to be in
your favorite vacation spot or
at the old home ballpark.
