Appointment
Rev. Bud Sutton filled his
regular first Sunday ap

the past week were Rev. Bud
Sutton and Miss Cindy Perry.
Sunday School members are
making plans for their
Christmas program to be held
on Sunday night December 23.
The beautiful flowers in the
church on the first Sunday
were in loving memory of
Miss Euna Barnett. A very
beautiful large Bible was
presented to the church by
Miss Edith Barnett in
memory of her sister.
Jerry Vernon, choir
director announced Sunday
that a special singing will be
held at the church Saturday at
7:30 p.m. Guest singers will
be the Marksman of
Dahlonega, Ga. We are sure
that any one who has ever
heard these singers will want
to take this opportunity to
hear them again. Every one
welcome.
Funeral services and burial
for Mr. Wylie Mangum were
held here Sunday evening.
Mr. Mangum passed away
Friday night in Crawford
Long Hospital.
Ralph Perry is a patient at

Bigotry
Difficult
To Fight
By HAL THORN
Copley News Service
Dear Hal,
I work for my father in a
dry cleaning shop, or at least I
did. We used to get along
great until my sister, who is a
good Jewish girl, married an
Italian Catholic boy from the
neighborhood. Personally I
think he’s a nice guy, but my
old man was against it. My
sister went ahead anyway and
ever since then he’s gotten
more and more sour. He
grumbles all the time about
being related to a Catholic,
and a Wop at that. I used to
try to tell him that my new
brother-in-law was just like
anybody else but that just
seemed to make matters
worse. Now he’s even gotten
so mad at me that he’s given
me the axe.
How do I go about convinc
ing the old boy that he’s wrong
so I can get my job back?
Irv
Dear Irv,
Your father’s mind is so
open I can’t even see it.
The kind of bigotry that
goes so far as to be taken out
on those who even so much as
disagree is almost impossible
to contend with in a heads-on
manner. Assuming you don’t
want to just keep quiet on the
subject and take your job
back on those terms (if you
could get it) I suggest you
start looking elsewhere. May
be as the old man gets to know
the son-in-law a little better
over a period of time he’ll re
lent, but I wouldn’t count on it.
I doubt that he’ll even give
himself the opportunity.

Many of us are doing a lot of
planning and preparing for
Christmas. Gifts are being
sought for members of the
family, cards are being
mailed and much thought and
attention is being given to the
externals of Christmas. Let
me pose a question: How
many of us are really into
what Christmas is all about to
the extent that we would give
a gift to our Lord through our
churches equal to what we
spend for family and friends?
Many will spend a bundle on
gifts, wrapping paper,
decorations and food, and
drop perhaps $5.00 in the
offering plate. All of this
certainly reflects our sense of
values and what is important
to us. It’s as if we really don’t
know what Christmas is
about. The hard truth is that

very few do know, hence, the
elaborate planning and
feverish activity concerning
things that have little, if
anything, to do with the birth
day of Christ.
I don’t want this to sound
like sour grapes, but it’s all
too true that business has
dictated what Christmas shall
be ‘like far more than
Christians motivated by the
Holy Spirit. If Christmas is to
be redeemed, it must begin
with Christians, not
reasonable facimilies thereof.
Let’s accent the joy, the
celebration of Christ’s coming
and the symbols that point to
what Christmas really is and
leave off the license to in
crease the national debt and
pamper ourselves with a lot of
things we don’t need. Our real
needs are the needs of a lost
world—the need to share the
gospel in word and deed.
Here, for the Christian is the
way to real celebration and a
sense of worth.

Teen-ager Seems
To Run Family
Q. Our teen-ager really
seems to run our family, or at
least tries to. He has an opin
ion on everything, and never
hesitates to express it. He
joins every conversation, and
butts into every group regard
less of who they are, what
they're talking about and
what their age is. He often re
veals his immaturity through
the invalid conclusions he ex
presses so freely. Any sugges
tions for handling this un
pleasant situation?
A. Why not try the direct
approach? Tell him you
sometimes enjoy discussing
with him topics of mutual con
cern, but it’s wise to keep
them between yourselves. Be
sides, there’s a need for re
specting other people’s time
and interests. You wouldn’t

We’ve been discussing the
