‘Mississippi Qharles’
A A rf&v
Talent Is Refreshing
Care to hear something
new, refreshing and very ex
citing? Well, meet “Missis
sippi Charles” Bevel. After
hearing his new A&M album,
called “Meet Mississippi
Charles,” it seemed only fit
ting to let the public in on this
fellow’s life, both musically
and personally.
He was born the 14th of 17
children in Sunflower, Miss.,
living on different cotton
plantations most of his early
life. After moving to Cleve
land with his mother, Bevel
decided to join the Navy.
It was through his years in
the Navy that Charles, sta
tioned in Hawaii, became a
flying radio operator and an
electronic technician. These
skills have come in handy pe

HOLLYWOOD - Once
again I’ve been awed by the
way stars give of their limited
time and almost limitless tal
ent to help each other and a
good cause.
Stars of the sports world as
well as from Hollywood
poured into Bakersfield for
the Third Annual Buck Owens
Celebrity Invitational Golf
Tournament to help Buck and
his home-town neighbors
raise money for cancer treat
ment and research.
And they not only played
golf, they put on a great show
in connection with the tourna
ment dinner.
Proceeds from the tourna
ment are being applied to the
$1.5 million needed to build
and equip a cancer research
and treatment center in Ba
kersfield to serve the southern
San Joaquin Valley.
Profits from the first tour
nament in 1971 went to fight
cancer on a national level, but
last year most of the tourna
ment money was allocated to
the Bakersfield project and
this yeat .the tournament was
totally dedicated to the much
needed facility which, when in
operation, will offer treat
ment to cancer sufferers re
gardless of their ability to
pay.
Dorothy Owens, Buck’s sis
ter and tournament treasurer,
estimates that the two days of
golf netted $50,000 which
doesn’t sound like a lot when
compared to proceeds from
older, better established ben
efit events.
However, it’s about twice as
much as the Owens tourna
ment brought in last year, so
the importance and impact of
the Bakersfield competition is
mushrooming.
There’s not room here to
mention the contribution each
celebrity made to the tourna
ment’s success, but the guys
who, after a full day of golf
ing, got together an impromp
tu, unrehearsed show to fol
low the Saturday night ban
quet deserve special mention.
If the performers hadn’t
been working for free, it
would have cost a fortune.
Monty Hall, emcee for the
evening, deserves special
commendation for handling a
tough job with style. He’d
done a benefit the evening be
fore, had played golf that day
so mobbed by fans that he
came off the course literally
bruised and battered and

riodically throughout his life,
so if you need your TV fixed
just call Charles.
After leaving the Navy, he
enrolled in San Diego State
College where he not only ac
quired an education but also a
wife. In ’64 they were married
and soon left for Africa to
meet her folks. He remained
in Liberia for three and a half
years.
“West Africa was a hell of
an experience and I guess a
lot of that stuff on the album,
particularly the songs ‘Over
heard’ and ‘Porcupine Meat,’
came out of that experience,”
he said.
Then back to Chicago he
went, and after a variety of
jobs and a frustrating period
with Jesse Jackson and “Op-
put together an evening of top
drawer entertainment.
“When Buck asked me to be
the emcee,” Monty said, “he
told me, ‘Our first choice was
Henry Fonda, but he turned
us down, and his show was
canceled. Then we asked An
thony Quinn, but he turned us
down, and his show was can
celed. So
Monty is a guy who finds it
so hard to turn anyone down
when he’s asked to work for a
good cause that his wife wrote
a television script (her first)
about a television host who
can’t say “No.”
She sold it to “Love, Amer
ican Style,” which produced it
with Monty playing the genial
host and Marlyn Mason, his
long-suffering spouse.
Although the tournament’s
banquet show featured such
talent as Ernie Ford, Charley
Pride, and Buck and his Buck
eroos, one of the liveliest
items on the program was the
performance of Mayf Nutter
backed by a trio of uncertain
siflgers: Mickey Mantle, Joe
Rudi and Bobby Murcer.
Mayf (in case his name
doesn’t ring a bell) is the
country-western singer who
plays James Stewart’s
nephew in “Hawkins.”
John Wayne and Bob Fuller
didn’t play golf but came to
Bakersfield anyway to help
draw a crowd to the tourna
ment. Since Wayne is as big
as a mountain, he’s easy to
spot, and the way the fans
rushed at him, you would
have thought he was Monty
’ Hall.
Although Roy Clark had
opened the night before in Las
Vegas, he flew into Bakers
field on Sunday to give “Hee
Haw” buddy Buck a hand
even though he’d gotten to bed
at 3:30 that morning and had
to get up at 7 to make his
flight.
Along that same line, Don
(Red) Barry stuck with the
tournament thoughout Sun
day even though he had a 4
a.m. call the next morning in
Long Beach where he was
working in a movie for televi
sion about Vince Lombardi.
As I said before, I’m repeat
edly awed by the generosity of
the show business community
when it comes to giving time
to a good cause.
It’s reassuring to know that
so many of our stars have
hearts as big as their talents.
eration Breadbasket,” he got
tired of the “whole civil-rights
thing” inasmuch as he wasn’t
getting anywhere and decided
to learn to play the guitar.
“I went to work at a steel
mill in Cleveland, and in my
spare time would strum a few
chords.” he said. “A few
months later, for a variety of
reasons, I decided to move to
a commune in Baltimore. At
the time, you know, playing a
guitar and writing were just
sort of self-serving spiritual
satisfaction.
“While I was in the com
mune, one of the fellows, a
buddy of Isaac Hayes, took us
to see him play. I had my gui
tar and was just playing
around when his manager
heard one of the things I had
written and asked for a tape of
my song.”
This was Bevel’s big break,
for shortly afterward Isaac’s
manager contacted him to tell
him that he had just earned
the fastest SBOO he had ever
earned in his life. The Staple
Singers had just recorded one
of his songs, “I’m A Lover,"
as the B side for their newest
single.
Things began to move very
quickly now and at the age of
33 Charles began to prepare
himself for yet another ca
reer, and like every other job
and experience in his life, he
entered into the project with
great caution, skill and seri
ousness.
“I got some books and just
started reading up on the mu
sic industry in general,” he
recalled. “On the strength of
the Staple Singers’ thing, I
headed for Memphis thinking
Stax Records might be in
terested in my songs. Some
where along the way I met
Jerry Butler’s press agent
and things just snowballed
from there.
“Before long, Butler him
self heard my songs and got in
touch with Calvin Carter
about producing my music.
Calvin and I prepared some
demo tapes which we re
corded at Universal Studios in
Chicago with some of the
Ramsey Lewis regulars like
Cleve Eden and Mark Jen
nings on drums and bass.”
Soon thereafter A&M Rec
ords became aware of
Charles’ many talents, took
him on and the results are laid
down in “Meet Mississippi
Charles Bevel” as only he
could do it.
In the 10 cuts that make up
the album one can find sweet
folk, blues, a gospel tone
along with the hard, powerful
driving beat of rock. Some of
the outstanding cuts include
“Sally Be White,” “This
Thing Happened To Me,” and
in keeping with the holiday
spirit there’s “Black Santa
Claus.”
All of Bevel’s lyrics seem to
relate to a part of his life,
which has been lived to its
fullest extent, and he says,
“Music is the thing I obvious
ly should have been doing all
my life.”
Listen to his album and see
if you don’t agree.
