HANK AARON DAY. SATURDAY, JULY 20
Aaron Day
Is July 20
On April 8, 1974, Hank
Aaron thrilled millions of
baseball fans throughout the
world when he broke the
all-time career home run
record.
On July 20, 1974, the fans
of Atlanta and the Southeast
will honor Hank for his career
of achievement in baseball by
holding Hank Aaron Day at
Atlanta Stadium when the
Braves play the Pittsburgh
Pirates.
Chambers of Commerce
throughout the Southeast
have been invited to make
presentations to Hank prior
to the game on behalf of their
communities. The overall
effort is being coordinated by
the Sports Task Force of the
Atlanta Chamber of
Commerce.
Pearce Hardwick,
prominent young Atlanta
attorney who is coordinating
the Hank Aaron Day
celebration, said, “The
Atlanta Chamber intends to
hold a genuinely regional
tribute to Hank Aaron,
reflecting the fact that it’s
not just Atlanta that is
honoring the scope of his
achievement. This tribute to
Hank will stretch across the
Southeast, including his
hometown in Alabama and
where he played minor league
baseball in Jacksonville.
Indications are that several
cities in Georgia, Tennessee,
South Carolina, North
Carolina, Florida. and
Alabama will be participating

Gulls pose peril
for Air Force
“Last year the Air Force
lost $24.5 million as a result of
bird strike hazards,” accord
ing to Dr. John Stout, profes
sor of biology who is conduct
ing research in seagull com
munication.
“Thirty per cent of these
losses were caused by gulls
interfering with landings and
takeoffs. Through the use of
artificial models, we believe
we can prevent at least half of
these losses with annual sav
ings of $3 or $4 million.”

Aaron is currently playing
his 21st big league season and
holds over a dozen major
batting records. On opening
day of this year, he tied Babe
Ruth as the all-time home run
leader with 714. Four days
later during the first Atlanta
Stadium home game of the
year, he excited a sellout
crowd by breaking the record
with number 715.
Hank also set the record
for most total career homers,
including All-Star Game and
World Series performances,
w hen he hit his 731st on June
4th in Philadelphia. That
home run also was a grand
slam and set a new league
mark for grand slams at 16.
Sometime late in the
season Hank should also set a
new record for career RBI,
surpassing Ruth at 2.209.
Additionally, in late July
(possibly even on Hank
Aaron Day), Hank should
play in his 70th game of the
1974 season which will make
him the “Iron Man” of major
league sport. It will be the
3,034 th game of his.career,
one more than the record
held by Tv Cobb and more
professional games than any
other athlete in any other
sport has ever played. (PRN)

Leaf movements
noted long ago
Several plant families have
members whose leaves move
in a regular pattern during
the day and night with leaf
surfaces generally horizontal
and facing the sun during the
day, folded together in a ver
tical position at sunset.
This process, called nyc
tinasty (night movement),
was described more than 2,300
years ago by Androsthenes,
who observed some nyctinas
tic legumes during a cam
paign with Alexander the
Great. CNS
