The
Living
Way
By Roger Williams
Reading the news convinces
me that our individual crimes
of violence, (muggings,
burglary, robbery etc.) are
the least of our crime
problems.
As bad as they are and in
need of correction and stiff,
swift penalty, our really
devastating and demoralizing
crimes are found in things
like bribery, corporate
deception, payoffs, kick
backs, money under the table,
political back-scratching,
individual and corporate
aggrandizement at the ex
pense of everyone else, tax
frauds and many others.
The Bible speaks of this
kind of thing as corruption in
high places. This is where the
real crime isandmakes street
Climb Any
Hill Slowly
By REV. W. LEE TRUMAN
Copley News Service
There are few things in the
world which have more sheer
delight attached to them for
me than an antique automo
bile. As much as I idealize
them and the struggle of men
to find the mechanical perfec
tion which we take for
granted, they did have their
problems.
One problem old-timers had
was climbing long, steep
grades. There was a good
chance of running out of fuel
halfway up the hill.
In the twenties most of
these old gems used a pump
ing system called the Auto
vac. It was a rather simple
device in which the manifold
. vacuum was used to work a
suction tank of approximately
one gallon mounted on the
firewall behind the engine.
Gasoline was sucked forward
from the main rear tank and
held in storage in the smaller
tank, where it flowed by grav
ity as needed to the carbure
tor.
Normally this system
worked just fine, but when a
person chose to climb a long
mountain grade with the
throttle wide open, the mani
fold vacuum dropped to al
most nothing. Without the
vacuum pump, there was no
gasoline being brought for-

crime look like a drop in the
bucket, which it is, by com
parison. How do we do
anything about this? No easy
answers are available but we
can begin with ourselves by
resolving to follow God’s
leadership in all our life, by
refusing to be associated with
those things that we know to
either be evil, and-or cause
evil and suffering.
We can be active at the
ballot box and support leaders
who have the best records for
honesty and openness. Most of
all, we can pray and lead
others to Christ.
If you don’t do this, don’t
complain. You have little
reason to expect anything

ward. It was not unlike the old
windshield wipers that used to
slow down when you put your
foot hard on the accelerator.
The problem was that im
patient drivers put their foot
hard down on the throttle and
rushed a hill in grand style for
five miles until the auto
gasped to a halt. Car after car
met this kind of trouble on
steep passes, and the non-wise
were puzzled by this and had
no idea why “old faithful”
pooped out.
The correct technique for
driving a hill with an Autovac
was to use the lightest possi
ble throttle opening and low
est gear needed and gently let
the car find its own pace up
the hill. If it threatened to
stutter, let it coast to a stop at
once and let it maintain a fast
idle so that the Autovac could
recover.
Let me couple that with an
incident that happened when I
was still in my mid-teens and
I went to work in a steel mill.
My job was to load steel pipe
onto a ramp for feeding an an
nealing furnace. This had to
be done every three minutes. I
worked feverishly hard for
two minutes and rested for
one.
I felt I was doing a fairly
good job and could even show
a loss of five pounds in three
days to prove it. The boss
fired me because he was con
vinced that I could not cut it.
And looking back, I can see he
was absolutely right. Key ad
vice came from an old steel
man on the crew who watched
me the first day and said,
“Kid, you have to slow that
down and work steady or you
will never make it.”
That was my first knowl
edge of pace. Blessed with the
endless energy of youth, I
never guessed that I had any
limits whatsoever. It never
occurred to me that there was
another better way to work
that would give best results in
the long run.

Although 55 mph is a law
now, if you drive it, you will
probably be angrily honked at
and passed at the first
chance. We Americans
always seem to want to be
faster, bigger, and stronger

Ford, what have you done?”
A searching question might
be, where are we going in

seems to be faster and faster,
not only in our driving, but in
our living.
Some are in a hurry to be 16
years old, and to receive the
“Almighty Licence”. Then
the goal is to be 18, for then
the law says we are adults.
Then many are in a hurry to
retire. It is sad when persons
reach the goal they are
rushing toward, and finds it is
not as good as it seemed.
If you are in a rush to get
somewhere, is it really worth
being there when you attain
it? Too often the place we are
hurrying to is not that
satisfying once we get there,
whether it as a place, an age,
new job, or home.
Jesus said that He was the
way. Those who heard him
say that might have been
puzzled as to what He meant.
But they saw later that the
way he lived led to a life that
was worth living.
If you are in a hurry, know
where you are going and
whether it is worth getting
there. Christ is the way to
make it worthwhile.

Be Ye Doers Of Word
W.R. CALLAWAY
“Our greatest need today is
an enlarged vision of Jesus
Christ. We need to see Him as
the One in whom alone the
fullness of God dwells and in
whom alone we can come to
fullness of life.
The Bible is the prism by
which the light of Jesus Christ
is broken into it’s many and
beautiful colors. The Bible is
the portrait of Jesus Christ.”
It is not a casual, super
ficial acquaintance with
scripture that the modern
Church needs, but rather to
heed our Master’s exhor
tation. “Let these words sink
into your ears.” There is no
particular secret about how to
do it. It just takes time,
purposefully redeemed from
our busy lives, in which to
turn Scriptures over and over
in our minds until it sinks into
our hearts and so regulates
everything we think and do. It
is those who thus meditate
day and night in God’s word
whom He pronounces
‘blessed.’
The practice of the daily
‘Quiet Time’ of Bible reading
and prayer, preferably first
thing in the morning and last
thing at night-it is an ex
tremely valuable discipline.
Truth is something to be
‘done’, not merely ‘known’.
Perhaps no apostle put this
more clearly than James, the
lord’s brother, who wrote:
“Be ye doers of the word, and
not hearers only, deceiving
yourselves.” (James 1:22).
To do the truth is to do what it

THE FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS-WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 197+
says, to translate its message
into action. Let me give you
five facets of the life-style of a
‘doer of the word.’
First Worship. Worship is
impossible without a
knowledge of the truth. It is
ludiorous to try to worship a
deity we do not know for we do
not know him we do not know
what kind of worship he
desires. Therefore the Bible
has an indispensable place in
both public and private
worship.
The second mark of a ‘doer
of the word is repentence. For
God’s word tells us what we
are as well as what He is,
discloses to us our sin, and
calls us to confess and forsake
it. Faith is resting confidently
on Him who is true. Faith
cannot exist in a vacuum or in
isolation; it is always a
trustful response to a trust
worthy person: “Those who
know thy name put their trust
in Thee.” “Faith comes from
what is heard, and what is
heard comes by the preaching
of Christ.”
Obedience is the fourth way
by which we become ‘doers’
of the word and not only
‘hearers.’ Jesus went further
than that. He indicated that
just as ancient Israel was to
prove her love for God by
obeying him, so Christian
disciples must prove their
love for Christ by their
obedience: “If you love me,
you will keep my com
mandments—He who has my
commandments and keeps
them he it is who loves me...”

This goes for social as well
as personal righteousness.
The home, the market place,
the law court, the farm—
these are the places where
righteousness was to be
practiced. We must obey God
every day of our lives instead
of yielding to the desires of
the flesh. We must follow the
leadership of the Holy Spirit.
The fifth mark of a
Christian who ‘does’ God’s
work is Witness. The christial
witness is witness to Christ,
and the Christ to whom we
have a responsibility to
witness is not merely the
Christ of our personal ex
perience, but the historic
Christ, the Christ of the
apostolic testimony.
The Bible, then has an
essential place in the life of a
Christian. For the revelation
