I Do! I Do!’ Is
In Gainesville
GAINESVILLE—A pro
fessional company led by
actors Regina Ress and
Robert Helsel will play 12
performances of the musical
“I Do! I Do!” at Brenau
College Little Theatre July
18-20. A Sunday matinee is
scheduled for July 14 at 2:30
p.m.
Miss Ress plays Agnes, the
wife. She is appearing at
Brenau on a guest artist
contract. She was featured on
Broadway last in the all star
revival of “The Women” with
Alexis Smith and Myma Loy.
Helsel plays the husband
and is a professional actor
and member of the Highlands
Yank-Reb
Festival
Planned
FITZGERALD -- The
outdoor drama, “Our
Friends, The Enemy” will
highlight activities at the
second annual Yank-Reb
Festival in this south Georgia
community August 9-11. The
play is part of ceremonies
marking the founding of the
city by Union veterans of the
Civil War in the 1890’s,
during the period when
bitterness towards the north
still burned strongly in
southerners. But the story of
Fitzgerald’s creation rips
through any resentment, and
is perhaps the most
impressive to come from
post-Civil War times.
In 1890, all America was
suffering from an economic
depression. The midwest was
hit doubly hard, for there, a
severe drought was punishing
farmers. A call for their aid
went up, and the first state to
respond was Georgia, rushing
much-needed food trains to
the stricken area.
Indianapolis, Indiana
newspaperman P. H.
Fitzgerald, a former Union
drummer boy, saw in this act
of generosity the possible
realization of his dream - to
create a colony for aging
Union veterans in the warm
climate of the south. Through
editorials in his newspaper,
interest was aroused in the
idea, and with the help of
Georgia Governor William J.
Northen, 50,000 acres of
virgin timberland were
bought in the southern part
of the state.
Thus began one of the
greatest colonizations in
recent history. By the end of
1895, 2,700 Union veterans
had come by train, wagon, or
on horseback to Georgia to
build their town. Among
them were men who had
marched with Sherman
through the state only a few
decades before, and one
colonist had even taken part
in the capture of Jefferson
Davis.
“Our Friends, The Enemy”
was written by Beth Davis of
Fitzgerald, he rself
granddaughter of two Georgia
Confederate veterans and
daughter-in-law of an Indian
Union veteran. The play is
held at American Legion
Park, and curtain time is
8:45.
In addition to “Our
Friends, The Enemy” the
Yank-Reb Festival will be a
week end of spirited
community activities. An arts
and crafts show and a sky
diving demonstration are
planned.

Dennis Rosa, director from
New York who was cited by
Newsweek magazine last
summer for his work in

R. 1., has directed “I Do! I
