Vegetable Gardens May
Have Lime Deficiency
By: Walter H. Rucker
County Agent
Occasionally while driving
around the county I find
vegetable gardens that are
suffering from a low pH.
Although a lot of effort has
gone into education growers
on the hazards of growing
vegetables in low pH soil, the
problem keeps “popping up.”
Many growers feel they are
on a good liming program.
Then the pH suddenly drops
drastically, resulting in poor
crops.
There are probably two
chief causes for this drop. One
is the use of high rates of acid
forming fertilizers. This can
be a particular problem when
two or more vegetable crops
are grown on the same land in
a given year.
Another cause of sudden
drop in pH is deep plowing
where a good slice of highly
acid soil is turned up and
mixed with the top layer of
soil.
When either or both of these
conditions occur, growers
need to take samples more

often to insure that adequate
lime is applied to compensate
for these situations.
During the growing season
growers should look for
symptoms of low pH. These
include yellowing, stunted
plants and, in severe cases, a
browning around the margin
of some leaves. Also, in plants
like lima beans, a general
chloritic color and crinkling
of the leaves occurs.
If low pH is suspected, a soil
sample should be taken
during the growing season to
determine the pH level.
In short, growers should be

constantly aware of the
hazards of low pH and keep a
close check on their soils to
prevent future losses due to
low pH.
Lime is the answer to low
pH. A quick shot of hydrated
lime or builders lime will
increase the pH almost im
mediately.
But to keep this situation
from recurring, agricultural
limestone should be applied
this fall. It takes from six to
nine months for agricultural
limestone to break down and
enter the soil solution. So,
limestone applied this fall will
be ready for use next spring
and summer. A limestone
application will last two to
three years.
But hydrated lime should be
applied at least twice during
one growing season.
Hydrated lime is highly
soluble and is absorbed by
plants almost immediately. It
is about twenty times as
strong as agricultural lime.
Hydrated lime should be
applied with caution, avoiding
any contact with the plant.

Frick Says
No Idle Land
Washington, July 8—“ It
should not be necessary to ask
farmers to idle land in 1975”,
Kenneth E. Frick told farm
leaders here today, in
reference to government
programs for wheat and feed
grains. Last July, Secretary
of Agriculture Earl L. Butz
announced the lifting of all
acreage set-aside (idling)
provisions for 1974 programs.
Frick said the current grain
production and demand
outlook indicates a need for
continuation of a full
production policy in 1975.
“There are two main
reasons we should be able to
continue our ‘hands off’ policy
in Farmers’ production
plans”, according to Frick,
Administrator of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture’s
Agricultural Stabilization and
Conservation Service.
“First of all, we plan to
keep the Government out of
the commodity business, and
leave stocks in private
hands”, Frick told members
of the National Association of
Farmer-Elected Committee
men. “This will result in
less government interference
in farm markets, lower cost to
taxpayers, and greater
dependence on the market
place, not Government, by
farmers for their incomes.
“Second, the high demand
for U.S. Agricultural
Products at home and abroad
will continue”. He indicated
current projections for U.S.
Farm exports were probably
low.
“The U.S. is no longer the
world’s residual supplier of
farm products. We have the
best exporting system and the
world’s most efficient farm
production. As a result, we
have become the most
dependable food and fiber
supplier. There is no reason
why we cannot maintain our
role as the world’s number
one agricultural supplier.
“The efficiency and
productivity of the American
Farmer has also allowed us to
maintain our domestic and
world humanitarian role”,
Frick added.
Frick noted that federal
costs have been greatly
reduced as a result of market
oriented farm programs.
“Because of reduced
payments for programs and

for storage of government
owned stocks, the farm
program share of the USDA
budget has been reduced from
about 40 percent to an
estimated 5 percent for the
current budget.”
He noted that farm ef
ficiency has been helped two
ways by the turnaround in
farm policy. “Farmers have
the freedom to choose the
best for the most return”,
Frick said, “And full
production farming allows for
economies of volume”.
Among the other options for
1975 programs Frick
discussed with the farm group
were commodity loans made
to farmers for interim
financing and the govern
ment’s sales policy for
disposing of commodities
acquired under the programs.
Frick said government
planners are discussing the
possibility of setting the sales
price for government-owned
grains at 115 percent of the
target price for the com
modity involved. Target
prices are prices established
by law as a basis for
payments to farmers, should

He also said the govern

for a 12 month period only,
with no loan extension, or

resealing of production under

SHOULD YOU
PEOPLE KNOW?
By J. LANIER
BANNISTER
Should you people know that Wild Land
Speculation in this county is putting us non
Speculators out of our homes? Should you know
that we have one Speculator on our present
Commission? Should you know that our County
Attorney is the Largest of the Large
Speculators? Should you know that our present
Zoning Board is dominated by Speculators?
These are a few questions the people of
Forsyth County need to know before selecting
your County Commissioners this year in our
August 13th Primary. My first, and most im
portant Plank in my platform, as presented last
week, involves curbing these Land Speculators.
At the present time, they are Muzzled due to the
tight money market with the 15 and 16 percent
interest rate. They will be back in the running
when this tight money market loosens up. You
can bet on this! What we need is a County
Commission and Planning and Zoning Board
free of Speculators. This we can't get for some
time but you can bet your life that I will expose
any Speculation coming before our Commission
and will let you know.
Now let us move on and see why Speculation
is so bad. Some Speculation is fairly good for a
community. Many of us have done a little of
this. Many of us will do some in the future, I'm
sure. I'm also sure that I will not do any while in
office. The worst thing about this deal involves
having elected and appointed officials in office
in the business who will set the rules and make
the decisions that can make or break us and
especially make themselves. Another wrong
lies in the fact that Unbridled Speculation is
driving up our tax digest so that a small far
mer, a small home owner on fixed income and
others desiring to purchase a modest dwelling
just can't do so. This is wrong! Last week I gave
you information showing the increase in our
Digest over the past 8 years. If you will recall,
the increase was almost 1,000 percent or 10
times. The vast majority of this is due to the
Wild Land Speculation.
Another thing I dislike about Speculation is
the Sneaky way these people go about this
business. They don't even let you know who
they are. They swap the same property back
and forth among themselves using different
names and always bidding the price up. Let me
give you an example showing this. I have an
official report, showing my Chief Opponent, his
regular partner, and another partner,
organized as Unicity, Inc. selling a tract of land
to Larry C. Morris for $568,500 plus loan
assumptions involving 6 parties. Also, at the
same time, these same parties, sold another
tract for $162,800 plus loan assumptions to 6
parties. Total Sales, if finally paid, will be
$1,442,200. Keep in mind that we have another
Uni-City crowd developing Habersham on
Lanier. We have all such tricky but legal tricks
going on. I would guess we have some 60 to 70
such like groups of speculators. They are so
plentiful that they begun to use Initials for
Names.
I must mention the best of the best or worse of
the worst such speculative ventures we have.
Charles Welch, City Councilman, My opponent,
Chigger, and our county attorney got stuck with
the Bagley property along with some purchased
from a neighbor. This is the property we zoned
for First Cententa Corp. and was the worst
zoning we ever did. I got suspicious when this
was zoned and put many "If and Buts" in the
zoning change. The corporation went flat
Busted trying to comply with them or else in
Fulton County. Anyway, these people listed
above have one mortgage to meet involving
$2,091,462. And another involving $86,317. See
Book 124, page 372 and Book 124, page 424 for
details. We have already given a years' ex
tension on this property regarding zoning. This
should be enough!
You might ask my reasons for presenting this
factual information. It is to show you that the
Planning Board has the power to make Zoning
recommendations. We, as County Com
missioners, have the sole power to make the
zoning changes. We can zone half of Forsyth
County for Trailer Parks if we desire. We can
zone for about anything we want to. All the
Commission has to do is to not be too
discriminating. Outside of this, it can do about
anything it chooses to until you can vote us out
of office. You know my position on zoning. You
know that I will not use this Office to benefit
Lanier Bannister. Can you say the same about
others? These are just a few things to consider.
You can bet your bottom dollar that 5 Com
missioners, acting together, can zone to benefit
them and their friends to the extent that we can
be Speculated out of very homes.
Next week I will try to get into other planks of
my platform. Let me know what you are most
interested in regarding this election. I will try
and work up what few County Contracts we
have received since assuming office. They are
very scarce but I want to be most accurate as
our Representatives will be most observant of
this report.
