Pascoe House Built In Gold Era

BY MARY SCHROEDER
Located on a tract of land in
eastern Cherokee and
western Forsyth Counties, the
Pascoe House bears witness
to a rich and intriguing tale
of the north Georgia gold era.
Three Pascoe brothers,
sons of John and Grace
Bennett Pascoe of Cornwall
County, England, were the
first of the family to journey
to America. After the trio was
separated by a storm at sea,
James, who landed first,
settled in Pennsylvania and
was later buried alive in a
coal mine in that state.
Samuel and John landed in
Canada and came to Georgia
during the Dahlonega Gold
Rush. Unsuccessful in
Lumpkin County, John ob
tained a stake from Major
Wiley Petty, a wealthy far
mer, and leased 10 acres in
eastern Cherokee along the
Etowah River from the
Leonard brothers who lived
near Ophir.
As the gold flowed in from
his mining efforts, John was
able to purchase not only the
10 acres leased from the
Leonards but the adjoining
lots as well. Having erected a
stately two-story house on his
Cherokee-Forsyth property
for his intended bride, John
sent to England for his chosen
one, but died of mercuric
poisoning at the age of 46
shortly before she arrived in
America. John’s tombstone
bears the following in
scription composed by his
brother Samuel:
A tribute of affection

JOHN PASCOE

of Cornwall England

For 14 years now we consumer-owned
electric systems have urged the Washington
establishment to develop a realistic energy
policy, to head-off the very situation now
existing in our country.
We've supported plans that included a
nationwide power network, or grid, to shuttle
kilowatts from area to area as needed ... and
realistic approaches to water resource
development.
We urge the conservation of electric power,
of course. But it's still the most efficient and
effective means to get so many jobs done! . . .
and, compared to the increased costs of many
other things, still about the best bargain in your
budget!

throbbing hearts, Prostrates

means this mournful tale?
Our brother is dead, Alas,
our brother is dead, His dust
remains, his happy spirits
buried. It was then that he
added “Mourning” to the
name of his youngest.
Samuel, his wife Mary, and
Mourning Victoria are buried
in Old Hightower Church
cemetery in eastern Cherokee
County.
I who speak of our brother,
the glories due to God, Who
made him what he was, by
grace he stood, And how we
all, have heard him entreat
That we with him, would fall
at Jesus’ feet.
If Martha, Mary and the
Savior, grieved, Because of
I,azarusthe bereaved, It can’t
be wrong that we should have
our sighs, When such a
brother sickens, pines and
dies.
Pause here a moment, is
there naught to cheer?
Amidst the gloom, what is it
that we hear? A soothing
voice, forbidding us to weep,
He is not dead, but only fallen
asleep.”
Upon John’s death, Samuel
Pascoe inherited the property
and with his wife, Mary
Jackson, niece of famed
Southern leader Stonewall
Jackson, raised a large
family in the imposing
structure erected by his
brother. The offspring of
Samuel and Mary included
James Henry, born in 1835;
Mary Catherine (1837), who
married Joseph Wyatt;
Martha C. (1838), who
married a Gilstrap who was
killed in the Civil War and
later married Helman (or
Ellum) Bowen; Grace
Elizabeth (1840), who
married John L. Gilstrap;
Angeline (statistics
unknown), who married
Webb Bowen; Eliza A. (1843),
who married Cicero
Hawkins; Jane H. (1845), who
married William Hillhouse;
Sarah Agnes (1847), who
married Jasper Hendrix;
twins, John J. and Samuel W.
(1855); Ellen Ciserine (1858);
and Mourning Victoria (1861).
Pascoe descendants tell the
story of Victoria, who was
probably named for Queen
Victoria of England. When
Samuel was away on a
business trip, Victoria died in
infancy. The family at-

tempted to keep her body cool
until her father returned by
placing her in the cellar. But,
unfortunately, Samuel
returned to find her dead and
and escaped for the duration
of his visit.
Another daughter was at
home one day when a man
called to be put across the
river on the ferry operated by
the Pascoe family. As all the
males of the household were
away, Samuel’s daughter
answered the call and
managed the ferry herself.
The two immediately fell in
love and were soon married.

Beside the Pascoe ferry
was a swinging bridge used
by foot travelers and by

The ferry was the scene of

their runaway team ran
across the ferry and into the
Etowah River. Although the
alarm was sounded at the
