The newly opened course at Lake Lanier Islands near Atlanta
holds a few surprises for golfers -- many of the holes open onto
the waters of Lake Lanier. (PRN)

GEORGIA
LAKE LANIER ISLANDS,
Ga. - If you’re looking for a
family recreation area that’s
within an easy drive of any
Georgia city, think about
Lake Lanier Islands.
The Islands, located 35
miles northeast of Atlanta off
1-85, include an 18-hole par
72 golf course designed to
appeal to the amateur and
challenge the pro.
The year ’round course
features numerous over-water
shots, a continuous panorama
of lake and mountain
scenery, and a temporary pro
shop for golfing supplies and
services.
A permanent clubhouse
and pro shop is scheduled to
open in February, and the
256-unit inn and restaurant
should be operational by
June.
Right now, for the golfer
who wants more than a day’s
play, the Islands have
campsites of all types,
fully-equipped family
vacation cottages, and
Georgia’s largest fleet of
rental houseboats; all within
minutes of the first tee.
The entire family will
enjoy pontoon and fishing
boats, trout ponds and the
weekend sailing cruise service.
There’s horseback riding and
a playground as well as
numerous picnic pavilions.
The Village Store is open
daily, although hours may
vary due to weather and
visitor demand.
You can pull-thru or
back-into the RV sites at
Lake Lanier Islands or pitch a
tent. Each site has water and
electricity and each comes
with a charcoal grill, picnic
Home Energy Saving
The question everyone is asking right now is, “what
can we do on a day-to-day basis to help save energy?”
Well, there are lots of things. So many that it will
surprise you.
Of course, not everybody
can do all of these things, or
even any of them all of the
time, but every little bit is
going to help. Further,
practicing these energy saving
tips will save money, and in
m ost cases cause no
discomfort or inconvenience
as much of the energy we use
right now does not do us any
good . . .we are all guilty of
over using energy because we
have taken it for granted.
The first thing is, of course,
don’t operate gas or electric
equipment unless you are
using it. This means don’t
burn unnecessary lights, or
lights in empty rooms. Even
more, it means don’t turn on
that television, radio, record
player or tape deck unless you
are paying attention to it. Too
many of us use entertainment
devices just for background
noice. Speaking of television,
black and white sets use only
half the energy that color sets
use. So, if you don’t watch all
that much t.v., consider
buying a black and white set.
If you have both kinds, try to
watch the black and white set
for shows that don’t need
color, for instance news
programs or old movies that
weren’t made in color.
Save the heat you have, and
take advantage of extra
sources of heat. Be sure that
doors to unused rooms are
clcced. Be sure that doors to
attics and basements are tight.
During the day leave curtains
open. Glass traps the heat
from sunlight. Close the
drapes at night to keep the
heat in. Even very thin drapes
help. If you are cooking a long
meal, say a roast, turn your
heat down even more. The
heat from the kitchen will
warm up the area
considerably.
When cooking, try to plan
meals that use only one source
of energy. In other words, try
table and easy access to
comfort stations which
feature showers and laundry
equipment.
The Islands’ spacious
two-bedroom vacation
cottages have been carefully
placed in the heart of an
unspoiled and secluded
environment and rent fully
equipped. All 56 units feature
central air conditioning and
heating, dishwasher,
disposals, carpeted bedrooms,
and a wood-burning fireplace
that adds a warm glow to any
winter day.
Docking facilities are
available for those who wish
to visit the Islands by boat
while on Lake Lanier. For
those with private aircraft,
the Gainesville Airport is
sixteen miles away and
accessible by four-lane
highway.
Lake Lanier Islands offers
a relaxed setting both afloat
and ashore on some 1,200
wooded hilltop acres and
blue-green waters that
surround them. It’s a
complimentary contrast of
beach and forest, and the
blend of winter activities is
carefully conceived to appeal
to every age and interest.

Fall and winter fun
throughout Georgia runs the
gamut from big league sports
to a rattlesnake roundup. For

activities, contact the Tourist

to cook everything in the oven
at once. P.S.-surprisingly, the
oven requires less energy than
the top burners. Small cooking
appliances, such as sandwich
grills or plug-in pots use the
least energy of all. If you own
such appliances, try to plan
meals that use them and don’t
turn the stove on at all. Try to
plan one cold supper a week.
Saturday-night cold cuts can
be tasty, fun and even cut
down on the grocery bill.
Cook vegetables with just a
little water, and cover the
pots. Be sure your pots and
pans are the right size for the
burner. Be sure the bottoms of
pots and pans are flat and
undented. Don’t over-cook. In
most cases, you can turn off
the fire a few minutes before
you’re ready to serve. The
stored heat will contyiue to
cook the food for as long as
15 minutes. You can also save
energy by preparing large
quantities of food and freezing
part of it. It costs less to
reheat than to start from
scratch. Be sure to thaw foods
before you start cooking
them. Many labels say to put
food in the oven still frozen,
but this takes extra energy. If
you cook right away, it
doesn’t hurt to thaw first.
Don’t oven-peep. Each time
you open the oven door you
lose as much as 20% of the
heat. Keep your oven clean,
but avoid using the
self-cleaning system as much
as possible. Even if you own a
self-cleaning oven, consider
cleaning it manually. In most
cases, preheating an oven is
unnecessary.

Has Dream
Copley News Service
HOLLYWOOD - Keith
Jackson remembers when he
was a kid milking the cows, a
Georgia farm boy who would
make up sports events and
announce them, play by play,
with proper excitement.
“People thought I was daffy,”
says Keith. “They thought I
was talking to myself or,
even worse yet, talking to the
cows.
“Speaking of cows, I used to
milk six cows every morning
and then I’d ride a horse to
school and then come home
and shuck the com. On cold,
rainy winter nights, I’d sit at a
desk with a kerosene lamp
and write stories and then an
nounce them. It’s all I ever
wanted to be, a sports an
nouncer.”
This was back where Keith
was bom and raised, in the
farm town of Bremen, Ga.,
which people in the area
choose to call “Bree-men.”
It’s 40 miles out of Atlanta
and, according to Keith,
“right smack dab in the heart
of the bootleggin’ and moon
shine country.”
Keith did indeed grow up
to be a sports announcer, ful
filling his boyhood dream and,
the other day, he was saying:
“In 27 years in this business I
can say in all honesty that I
have never consciously hurt
anybody in terms of competi
tiveness. I’ve never been one
for politickin’ and I’m not
much for cocktail parties.
“I just don’t go around and
shake a lot of hands,” says
Keith. “I just believe in doing
my job.”
By doing his job, Keith
Jackson has reached an ele
vated niche in his profession
as one of the prime operatives
on ABC Sports and he was
given a new assignment this
season as the play-by-play an
nouncer on the network’s
NCAA football telecasts. He
also bounces from varied
events on “Wide World of
Sports” to pro bowling and
auto racing and hosting “The
Superstars” and covering a
flock of golf tournaments.
He’s a winner of the presti
gious Peabody Award and,
just last year, he was named
Sportscaster of the Year for
his second straight triumph.
But Keith has also known
his valleys. It doesn’t take
much of a memory jog to re
call that when ABC began its
Monday Night Football tele
casts, in addition to Howard
Cosell and Don Meredith the
threesome was filled out by
Keith Jackson. He lasted one
year.
Before the start of the sec
ond year, Roone Arledge,
ABC’s sports chief, put in
Frank Gifford as Jackson's
replacement. “Keith,” said
Arledge at the time, “did
everything we asked of him.
He’s a fine professional. But
we wanted a different kind of
mix.”
As Keith looks back, he ad
mits that the losing out on
Monday Night Football was
not one of his more pleasant
experiences. “My feelings
were bent somewhat,” Keith
says.

GEORGIA
FORSYTH COUNTY
The City of Cumming municipal
election will be held on December
3, 1974. The Georgia Municipal
Election Code and the Charter of
the City of Cumming governs the
conduct of the election and the
qualification of candidates. Any
person interested in seeking the
office of councilman or mayor may
obtain from City Hall on or after
October 28, 1974, a Notice of
Candidacy which must be filled out
and returned no later than
November 20, 1974, at 12:00 o'clock
Noon. The offices being filled are
those of five councilmen and the
mayor. To qualify for the can
didacy of mayor or councilman,
one must be twenty-one years of
age, a resident of the City of
Cumming for one year next
preceding the date of election and
a qualified voter of said City. For
the purpose of electing members of
the council of the City of Cumming,
there are five council posts
designated as post numbers 1,2, 3,
4 and 5. Any candidate when
qualifying for membership on the
council shall designate the post for
which he is offering and name the
incumbent, if the incumbent is
again seeking office. The
designation will then be entered
upon the ballot and the ballot
labelled so that in the election such
candidate shall only oppose the
other candidates designating that
post. (Ga. Laws 1971, page 3963)
Likewise, any candidate for mayor
shall enter his intention on his
Notice of Candidacy and shall
oppose only other candidates
designating that particular office.
For each post and also the office of
Mayor the candidate receiving the
highest number of legal votes for
the office qualified shall be
declared elected. The City Charter
expressly provides for plurality
vote, not majority. (1953 Ga. Laws
3003; Ga. Code Ann. 34A - 1407) The
City Charter of Cumming provides
ihat once a person has registered,
his registration shall be per
manent and it shall not be
necessary that he register again in
order to vote in the city (1965 6a.
Laws, pp 2607) However, the
Georgia Municipal Code provides
that no person shall remain a
qualified voter who does not vote in
at least one general or special
election in a three year period or
specifically requests continuation
of his registration. (Ga. Code 34A -
514) This means that unless a
person voted in the last City of
Cumming election in December of
1972; he must re-register. If a
person moves out of the City limits
and moves back again, he must re
register. Voter registration may
be done at City Hall from October
28, 1974 until November 23, 1974,
between thehoursof 8:00 A.M. and
2:00 P.M. each and every day
except Sundays and Legal
Holidays. (1971 Ga. Laws 3963)
The Municipal Election Code and
the City Charter provide that no
person shall vote in the City
election on December 3, 1974,
unless he has previously
registered to vote, is a citizen of
the United States, at least eighteen
years of age and a bona fide
resident of the City of Cumming.
The polls will be open from 7:00
o'clock A.M. to 7:00 o'clock P.M.
on December 3, 1974.
