Analyze Your
Driving Skill
BY TPR. WILLIAM C.
HYDE
Safety Education Division
Georgia State Patrol
What kind of person are
you? Are you really as good
a driver as you think you
are? Ask yourself a few
questions. When’s the last
time you paused and
gestured with your hand for
a pedestrian to cross the
street or another driver to
proceed? When’s the last
time you slowed down so a
passing driver would have a
little easier time of it pulling
back in the right lane just
ahead of you? When’s the
last time you signaled with
your arm for the driver to
hold up because there might
be trouble developing ahead
where he won’t be able to see
it? When’s the last time you
had a co assionate thought
for another driver, especial
ly a slower, elderly, or
school bus type. When’s the
last time you really drove 55
MPH, and not having the at
titude that no one else com
plies with the 55 MPH law, so
why should I?
When’s the last time you
wore a seat belt, or saw to it

that your children or other
passengers in your vehicle
had their’s fastened? Are in
cidents such as these every
day occurences? Or is it
tough to remember? It’s
easy to think you’re one of
the best drivers who ever liv
ed, that rare is the day you
make a driving error, that
you’re a pro and in a special
class of skilled drivers. It’s
easy to think all of this. But
how often do you realistical
ly analyze your driving
performance-really sit
down and think about it?
Such a skull session might
bring to mind some narrow
missed or a couple of almost
but-not-quite incidents. An
experience or two like this
doesn’t really tarnish your
professional driving reputa
tion beyond redemption, but
recognizing the slips and
figuring out how to keep
them from happening again
will make you an even better
driver than you are now. The
old saying, “here today,
gone tomorrow,” couldn’t be
truer concerning traffic
safety. Take life seriously,
drive defensively.

HOME POISONING
Did you know that while
deaths from disease have
dropped, deaths from
household poisoning have
risen? Both of these are due
to chemical progress. Over
250,000 household products
today make life easier and
more enjoyable. But they are
dangerous
poisons! If it’s strong enough
to do the job—it’s strong
enough to harm you or your
child, warns Extension
safety experts.

Students in Laverne Ledbetter’s fourth grade class at Midway Elementary School are shown
sampling different meats as part of a nutrition program. Pat Frost’s sixth grade class at Big
Creek Elementary also sampled the same meats. The children were told of the ingredients,
ways of serving and cost per pound. After the sampling the students were surveyed as to
which they preferred. The results were: pepperoni 31, Canadian bacon 15, beef wieners 5,
chicken franks 5, Braunschweiger 4, and cotto salomi 2.
