-THE FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS—WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30,1980
ATLi
Where else could one find a country with all of the
freedoms, benefits and opportunities that we have here in the
U.S. Sure, we have taxes, inflation and inequalities, but less
in every one of these catagories than other nations of the
world.
Much of what we enjoy is derived from the effects of the
Christian faith. It has encouraged us to improve our lot and to
seek to insure the rights and freedoms of others as well as our
own. All have enjoyed (and sometimes abused) the benefits
of Christianity whether they were Christian or not.
People who have invested their lives in improving our na
tion and its people love it the most and are the ones who will
also make sacrifices to defend and preserve. That’s how it is
with God. He’s invested much in people and He wants only
the best for them and is willing to go to great costs to Himself
to save His people. Thus He sent Jesus His Son to be our
redeemer and emancipator from sin and slavery to the ef
fects of sin.
We have a sacrificing God, one who is prepared to suffer
pain in order to serve us. He has already done this in Christ
who has come to rebuild broken relationships and bring
peace to mankind. Where Christ is ignored and not
understood there is war, crime and hurt.
Christians are a people who have responsibilities because
they have been given much.
We in America have been given much - let’s not be
ungrateful and cowardly. In its great hour of need let’s rise
up to pay whatever price is required that our freedoms may
endure in this great nation.

Build Walls
We think it is a very
strange to see that an entire
book in the Bible is about the
building of a wall. The book
of Nehemiah in the old testa
ment is remembered first of
all for one thing: He built the
walß of Jerusalem.
These walls were impor
tant because in those days
the walls made a city.
Without them, the people
were open to attack by their
enemies.
Nehemiah went out with
several of his close friends
and looked over the walls of
the entire city of Jerusalem.
He called the people
together. He said their city
was in great trouble. Not on
ly were the walls broken
down. The gates were
destroyed by fire.
The second thing
Nehemiah did after the wall
was co leted. He gathered all
the people in the city and
read to them the law of God.
He brought revival among
the people.
So we see two things were i
ortant: First, the restoration
of the wall to protect them
from the external forces
from without; and second:
the restoration within by the
word of God.
What has that got to do
with us today in America?
My friends, we have
recently examined the walls
of America. Have you ever
seen our walls? What shape
they are in? We want to say
that we have. Like
Nehemiah, we walked the
walls of America. This is our
report to you: Our walls are
fallen down. Our gates are
burned with fire.
We believe that today
America stands on the very
edge of total destruction or
complete surrender. We are
in the worse worst danger
that we have ever been in. At
this moment you and your
loved ones stand exposed to
physical destruction. Why do
make this statement? Do
you think we could stop an
enemy attack? Do you think
American has nothing to

worry about?
These are the words of Ma
jor General George J.
Keegan, Jr., the former
chief of Air Force In
telligence: We do not have
one single defensive weapon
in this country to stop an in
coming missile - not one!
This man knows more about
American and Soviet
strategic weapons that pro
bably anyone in the world.
Did you know that at one
time we had anti-ballistic
missiles? We had 5.1 billion
dollars worth. Senator Ted
Kennedy led a fight in the
Senate and had them
dismantled and removed.
Today we do not have one.
There is an idea in
America that if we each fire
our missiles, we would each
destroy the other country.
This was true 10 years ago.
Here are the facts today:
The Soviet Union would kill
135 to 160 million Americans,
and the U.S. would kill only
three to five per cent of the
Soviets. They have civil
defenses and anti-ballistic
missiles.
General Lewis Walt, the
former Assistant comman
dant of the Marine Corps’
says, The U.S. has been
brought, by its own civilian
leaders, to a position of
military inferiority to the
Soviet Union. Today the U.S.
has no civil defense pro
gram, no anti-ballistic
missiles, and no defense
against even a bomber at
tack.
Unlike Jerusalem, our
defensive forces have been
stripped by a deliberate
move on the part of our of
ficials. They think we are
demonstrating our desire for
peace. Our walls were cast
down block by block by the
leaders of our own country.
It is a terrible thing to
think of waking up some day
and hearing that the Presi
dent has surrendered this
nation to the Kremlin...and
then wait for the knock at
our own door.

Divisions are also the
nature of man. Why? People
are different. Each has his
own heritage, mind, beliefs,
style, way of life and
background. Some are more
rational than emotional.
Some are more emotional
than rational. Some are in
between. Some are not
necessarily among the three
kinds. So it was natural that:
Christ did not see unity
among the disciples. All
were competing. Everyone
wanted to be the greatest.
Paul did not see unity
among the believers in one
local church. Some believed
in Peter’s theology to be
more correct. Some believed
that Paul was better in his
thoughts. Some did not like
both and believed that
Apollos was more correct
than Peter and Paul...etc.
They came to Xianity from
various backgrounds. That
will make difference.
The early centuries did
not experience unity either.
The time of the reforma
tion came and added to the
divisions and the competi
tion of the various churches.
Today we find two kinds of
divisions in the church:
1. Divisions between the
members of the one local
church.
2. Divisions and competi
tion between the various
denominations.
That is one of the causes
why the non-Christians are
not able to see the supreme
value of being a Christian.
Two unique remarks about
Jesus’ prayer for unity:
Jesus said in his prayer:
v. 20: “Neither pray I for
these alone, but for them
also which shall believe on
me through their word.”
1. His complete faith in the
Father. In spite of the cross
that was facing Him, and
although his followers were
few, his faith that many
would believe in him was un
shaken. Remember Jesus
prayer for us here “-but for
them also which would
believe on me-“
2. His confidence in his
disciples. He knew that
through those few followers
others in the future would
believe.
What kind of unity did
Jesus pray for?
William Barclay in his dai
ly study Bible series says:
“It will never be that
Christians will organize
their churches all in the
same way. It will never be
that they will worship God
all in the same way. It will
never even be that they will
all believe exactly the same
things.”
If this is true for what kind
of unity, then, did Jesus
pray? As I see it Jesus
prayed for:
1. A unity of love and obe

dience. It is not important to
ask for a unity of administra
tion. It is not important to
seek one organization. It is
not necessarily unique to
have the same form of wor
ship and the same set of
rules for every church. What
is important is a unity of per
sonal relationship of love
and obedience.
Trueblood in one of his
observations said:
“Denominations have con
tributed much to the
richness of the Christian
cause.” He added, “Have we
not all been enriched by the:
Lutheran emphasis on
justification by faith; The
Methodist stress on social
justice; The Congrega
tionalist insistence that each
congregation should be self
governing; The Baptist con
cern for separation of church
and state; The Episcopalian
appreciation for the beauty
and dignity of the liturgy;
The Quaker belief in the im
portance of group silenoe in
worship; The Roman
Catholic example of inner
discipline as seen in the
faithfulness of their atten
dance at Mass? The
Presbyterian form of
government and discipline.
Theologians can see that
what Jesus meant was not
that all may become one
denomination. Above all, not
all the members of the one
body are hands or legs.
What Jesus meant was a
unity of love and obedience.
2. A unity of testifying to
the glory of God:
Jesus said in V. 23 “that
they may be made perfect in
one; and that the world may
know that thou hast sent me,
and hast lovedfoved them, as
thou hast loved me.” Jesus
here was praying for the
kind of unity which would
convince the world of the
truth of Christianity and the
place of Christ.
It is sad to be able to see
more unity among the
Moslems and the Com
munists than among Xians.
3. A unity in the spirit of
Christ:
What unites us:
Presbyterians, Baptists,
Methodists, Episcopalians,
Catholics is not the one
organization. We are not one
organization. But we should
be one in the Spirit of Christ.
