“No Money Down’’-“Easy
Terms'’-“Charge It”-We
hear these phrases almost
constantly today in adver
tisements for everything
from boats and cars to boots
and coats. What is it all
about?
Consumer Credit is not
long time credit like a mor
tgage on your home. It is
short term credit, usually for
three years or less, the kind
of credit used to buy cars,
TV sets, appliances, or
money borrowed to enable
you to pay cash for such
items.
It used to be almost con
sidered a “sin” to go into
debt for consumer goods and
services. The only kind of
debt that was thought to be a
good use of credit was a debt
incurred for capital for
production-money borrow
ed to make more money.
That day is past Today,
people of all ages and from
all levels of income use con
sumer credit. Some people
get into trouble by unwise
use of credit. They don’t stop
to figure how much credit
they can use without com
mitting themselves to pay
more than they can afford
and still pay living expenses.
Most people conscienciously
want to and try to pay their
debts.
Credit is a promise to pay
later for what you buy today.
It is spending your income
before you get it. The only
way to know how much you
can safely allot for paying
off debts each month is to
have a budget or spending
plan. Your credit payments

become “fixed” payments
on debts, take up so much of
your income that you cannot
meet your other living ex
penses.
What are some of the ad
vantages to using credit?
Some people who cannot, or
will not put money aside for
bit items they want or need
use credit as a means of
“forced savings”. They may
not be able to save the
money for toe item they
want to buy but they can
manage to find a way to pay
off monthly installments for
such things as cars’ ap
pliances, etc. This allows
you to enjoy and use toe item
while paying for it
Some other advantages of
credit are: you can get cash
to meet real emergencies;
and you can capitalize on
some opportunities that
come your way when you are
temporarily low on cash.
Using credit requires
more money management
skills than does using cash.
With cash you know your
limits. With credit it is easy
to: buy too much, buy more
expensive items than you
need or can afford; and; get
into financial difficulties.
Before using credit,
analyze how you stand finan
cially. Make a budget. Be
sure that your income is cer
tain and that there is enough
margin between your cur
rent expected expenses and
expected income to pay off
toe debt you are considering.
Used wisely, credit can be a
valuable tool in today’s liv
ing.
