109th edition of Ringling Bros, and Bamum and Bailey Cir
cus.

Highlights
The Circus
Kit Haskett, the young
singing ringmaster, drinks a
quart of cranberry juice to
fortify himself before he
picks up the microphone to
narrate the three-ring se
quence of acts at The
Greatest Show on Earth,
which arrives at The Omni in
Atlanta on Wednesday, Feb.
6 for 22 performances
through Sunday, Feb. 17.
During the three hour
show, he steps in and out of
the spotlight, directing the
audience’s attention to the
display of acts taking place
in the air and on the ground.
As singing ringmaster,
Haskett is a modern expo
nent of a classic 100 year old
Big Top tradition. But he ad
ded a variation to the role
when he began dancing as
well as vocalizing. “So now
I’m the singing, swinging
ringmaster,” he laughs.
Haskett is a firm believer
in living life to the fullest and
that includes his spiritual
life. A recent convert to
Charismatic Christianity, he
incorporates his faith into
every facet of his daily
routine. “I’m trying to apply
Jesus to everyday ex
istence,” he explains. “I
have a love for Jesus. I’m
not always sure how deep it
is. I have my weakness, I
know that.” Haskett meets
regularly with other Circus
people for prayer sessions.
Forestry News
By Ed Wright
Ranger
Although state nurseries
are producing millions of
quality seedlings each year,
the Georgia Forestry Com
mission is reminding lan
downers that the ultimate
survival rate depends on the
manner in which they handle
and plant the young trees.
James C. Wynens, Chief of
the Commission’s Reforesta
tion Department, said the
seedlings are carefully pack
ed in special double walled
and waterproofed con
tainers. If planting is not to
be done immediately upon
arrival, from the nurseries,
he said the containers should
be protected from sun, rain
and cold temperatures and
damaged bags should be
repaired with tape or
staples.
Forsyth County Forest
Ranger Ed Wright also
pointed out that the seedling
packages should never be
stacked. “This would cause
heat to be generated by the
normal respiration of the
seedlings and the heat would
not be dissipated, thus
resulting in hot spots,” he
said.
Commission personnel
said the seedlings should be
planted within a two week
The 29 year old Palo Alto,
Calif, native received a B.A.
in theatre arts from Rollins
College in Florida. After
graduation, Haskett em
barked on a hard-knock
route to success; he sang
and played guitar in
restaurants and lounges, and
did a pilot for the revamping
of TV’s “Howdy Doody”. He
was between engagements,
digging ditches in Florida,
when he was offered the job
of ringmaster at Ringling
Bros, and Barnum and
Bailey Circus World.
After eight months there,
Circus president and pro
ducer Irvin Feld offered
Haskett his current position
and he has been touring with
the show ever since. “The
job is great,” he says. “I’m
just trying to enjoy every
moment I have, since only
one in 500 million people will
ever have this experience.”
Haskett travels the Circus
route with Stewie, his wife of
10 years, whom he met on a
study travel course aboard
the World Campus Afloat,
and their baby daughter,
Heather. The Hasketts live
on the Circus train while the
show is in town, and travel
from city to city in a
Volkswagen camper that
enables them to strike out on
their own and see the coun
tryside.
period and if held longer,
they should be heeled in.
Heeling in is a temporary
planting technique in which
seedlings are placed in the
ground for a short time.
Ranger Wright said the pro
cess is explained in a plan
ting folder distributed by the
Commission. He said the il
lustrated folder also details
methods of planting by hand
and machine and provides
many other tips to help
assure a good survival rate.
Wynens said all pine
species have been sold for
the current planting season,
but the nurseries still have a
good supply of dogwood,
sycamore, sweet gum, live
oak and catalpa seedlings.
He said the seedlings are
packed in multiples of 1,000,
500 and 50 and can be
ordered through any Com
mission Office in the state or
through county agents, Soil
Conservation Service offices
or the Agricultural Conser
vation Program.
FROZEN PIPES
Never use a blowtorch to
thaw frozen water pipes,

engineers. It could cause a
steam explosion.
