Dogs Down Jaguars
In Important Battle
The Forsyth County
Bulldogs all but clinched
first place honors in the 8-
AAAA south sub-region last
week when they defeated the
Jaguars from Cedar Shoals,
61-57.
The Bulldogs still have
sub-region games left with
Peachtree and Lakeside, two
teams they have already
defeated. Two losses could
create a tie for first place
honors but without a mental
letdown the Dogs should only
strengthen their hold on first
place as the season winds
down toward the sub-region
tournaments.

THE OTWELL Middle
School basketball squads
finished their 1979-80 season
last weekend by winning top
honors in both girls and boys
division in their post-season
tournament.
The tournament was the
finale of two very successful
seasons for the Lady
Bullpups of Coach Jim
Bishop and the Bullpups of
Coach Jackie West.
Coach Bishop’s Lady
Bullpups went the season
undefeated for the second
year in a row. Since becom
ing the head coach of the
girls, Bishop has an
unblemished record, his
team winning 18 games last
season and 12 this year.
Bishop’s lifetime coaching
record is an amazing 100 vic
tories against only three
losses, dating back to his B
team coaching several years
back in Jackson County.
When asked about the suc
cess of his two years as head
coach at Otwell Middle
School, Coach Bishop is
quick to recognize the
athletes he has had in the
program. “The desire to
play any sport is as impor
tant as the natural ability
one might have. These young
ladies on the team this year
were blessed with both,
especially the desire. Their
willingness to work toward
perfection and their total
dedication to the game earn
ed my utmost respect
toward each and every girl.
“Our squad was made up
of 11 eighth graders and
seven seventh graders and
I’ve never enjoyed working
with any group any better.
The team was as close knit
as any you wiil ever find.
Those who didn’t play as
much as the others were as
instrumental in the team’s
success this year as
anyone.”
When asked about the
outlook for next year’s team,
Bishop is optimistic. “The
team next year won’t be as
big as this year’s in height,
but will be in heart. This
year’s starting team and
their immediate substitutes
were called the ‘Little Red
Machine’. Next year’s pro
bable team, which served
terrific bench support and
scrimmage personnel this
year, already have their
nickname selected, the
‘Munchkin Patrol’ and a
hearty group they are,”
Bishop added.

COACH JACKIE West is
just as proud of his Bullpup
team who finished the
season with a 9-3 record.
Coach West is very pleas
ed when he speaks of this
past season’s squad. “We
had 16 hard working young
men on the team this year.
There were nine eighth
graders and seven seventh
graders, the first time we
had carried any seventh
graders. This year’s squad
was the shortest I’ve ever
coached but what the boys
lacked in physical at
tributes, they made up for it
with sheer determination
and desire. They took it on
themselves for the most part
game early as Monty Ham
montree tallied the first
eight points for the Dogs on
three field goals and two free
throws to give Forsyth an 8-2
lead.
Cedar Shoals closed the
gap to 9-4 but Forsyth’s lead
was increased to 11-4 when
Chip Housley stole the ball
and took it the length of the
court for an easy layup. The
Jaguars bounced back with a
couple of baskets of their
own but then Jeff Perry col
lected lour of his five first
quarter points to give the
Bulldogs a 15-8 lead after one
period of play.
For the quarter the Dogs

to improve daily through
practice running and work
ing with weights.
“I would even say that
because of the boys sticking
with the weight program our
season was as successful as
it was. We had our ups and
downs early in the season
but because of the team’s
constant desire to improve
we finished very strong
down the stretch and were
probably playing almost to
total capability the final two
games of the tournament
last week,” West stated.
When asked about next
year’s team, Coach West is
optimistic, “We’re sending
some good boys to the high
school but because of their
improvement and playing
time this year I am expec
ting a fine team next year.”
Coach West added one
other thing about this year’s
Bullpup members, “Besides
learning a lot about basket
ball I feel that each member
of this team learned a lot
about themselves, that with
hard work and determina
tion they could overcome
obstacles that would hinder
the team’s hopes for a suc
cessful season. That they
realized that what they ac
complished is only an exam
ple of what each and
everyone is capable of doing
with the rest of his life is just
as great a feeling as ending
with a 9 and 3 record.”

straight baskets to pull
within six at 30-24.
For the remainder of the
quarter the Bulldogs could
only manage five more
points, four by Perry, and
led by only seven, 35-28 as
the third quarter ended.
The Bulldogs hit their first
four baskets of the final stan

at 43-30. For the period these
were the only field goals ac
counted for by Forsyth but
their 13 trips to the free

good on eight, kept Cedar
Shoals from ever making a
serious challenge for the
lead until the final half
minute of the game.
