-THE FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY6,I9BO
Forsyth County Library
use has increased 25 per cent
over the last reporting
period, according to Mrs.
Jean Potts, County
Librarian.
The Forsyth County
Library circulated 20,429
library books from July
through December of 1979,
an increase of 4,035, books
over the same period in 1978.
The Forsyth Library has
also increased in reference
use, film use, the number of
library patrons, and in its
volume of inter-library
loans.
The Forsyth Library is a
member of the Lake Lanier
Regional Library which
serves Forsyth, Dawson,
and Gwinnett counties. Ac
cording to John Shelton,
regional library director, all
of the counties have shown
phenomenal increases in
use. Shelton said, “Mrs.
Potts and her staff have done
a tremendous job in keeping
library service both friendly
and effective. Despite a con
tinual increase in the
workload, the Forsyth Coun
ty Library staff has
demonstrated a willingness
to go that extra step to help
the public use library
resources.”
He added, “The library is
thriving and healthy in about
any measurable way; the
circulation is up, in-house
use is up, all basic services
are utilized, there is a high
percentage of adults using
the library, about 60 per cent
of circulation is adult books;
about 65 per cent of the
library patrons are adults
and the problems that occur
are the kind of problems ex
pected given the increased
library use.”
Shelton said that the nu er
of new patrons, the never en
ding inflation, the increased
use by patrons of many
years, are all causing the
need for budget increases
and an expansion of the
building facilities. He said,
“Mrs. Potts needs more per
sonnel hours now, more
books and other library
materials; and of course,
supporting costs increase
proportionately. Currently
Lake Lanier Regional
Libraries are operating on a
$2.00 per county resident
budget. About $1.05 comes
from local government
sources and the rest comes
from the State of Georgia
and the federal govern
ment.” He said this is far
below the state per person
average cost.
According to Shelton’s in
formation over $5.00 per per
son is spent on the average in
Georgia per year for
operating costs. Over $3.00 of
this is spent by local govern
ment. He said that it will not
be possible to continue
library operations and
deliver even the fundamen
tal services unless local ex
penditures continue to in
crease to meet the costs of
inflation, new patrons, and
increased use.
“Mrs. Potts and the other
Forsyth County Library
employees are doing all that
can be reasonably expected
of people, maybe more,”
Shelton said. He added that
it will soon be time to plan
for an expansion of the
library building. He said that
there isn’t enough room dur
ing busy hours for people to
sit and read and use
reference materials. “The
population growth is in
evitable and sound planning
now will prevent some
serious overcrowding pro
blems five years from now. I
like to plan ahead a bit and
anticipate rather than to
react to a crisis that doesn’t
need to happen. Proper plan
ning saves the public money
and prevents bad library
service,” Shelton said.
