Dead Wood
Christian, if you had to share basically what your church
believes and share the programs and activites of your church
with a stranger, could you do it? More importantly, could you
take the Bible and show this stranger (or friend or anyone)
what one must do to become a Christian? If your church has a
statement of faith or covenant, could you explain it properly?
By now some of us may be asking ourselves, “Do we have
anything like that?” Whether written or unwritten all chur
ches have some basic premises of faith and practice.
The next question is “How much is your membership in
your church worth to you?" Is it valuable enough to spend
some time discovering answers to the above questions or is it
mostly a cultural affair - you’re a member because parents
or friends are, and little more. Just because you’ve always
been whatever you are doesn’t mean you know what you
should know.
It’s amazing to me how we will work to learn all the details
of a new job, all the requirements fof a new club a civic
organization, but don’t want to take the time to check these
things out in the most important organization of all, our
church. Having belonged to a number of churches during my
lifetime, I’ll testify to the fact that there are many dif
ferences, even among churches of the same denomination.
With something as important as membership in the body of
Christ, you owe it to yourself to check out doctrines, pro
grams, attitudes, etc., before you join. Don’t be dead wood.
Every church has far too many of that kind of member. Be in
volved. Be loyal. Be present for services and Bible study. The
civic club I belong to drops members who are absent 41 per
cent of the meetings in a year’s time. Would your church
membership stand that test? Would you care to tell your Lord
why?

J ~ S/n Of Pride
Pride is beyond a doubt the
most besetting sin we com
mit. It is our worst enemy. It
whips us daily, robs us of
friends, comes between
husbands and wives. It is
disintegrating, dulling, bor
ing. But it’s not the obvious
brand of pride that under
mines us. Most folks are too
smart for that. But the sub
tle, insidious, brand that
masquerades as “self
sufficiency," this ‘‘wolf in
sheep’s clothing,” variety is
a very dangerous type of
pride. It’s dangerous
because on the surface it
sounds so right, so strong,
and we respect someone who
is willing to stand up and
fight his battles and make
his own way. But there are
times when we unmask it
and we see what it really is -
pride - the wrong kind.
The idea of a “self-made
man” is a misnomer. Every

Humility is a basic 1 re

Humility was at the bottom
of the greatness of Jesus
Christ. Scripture says that
when he came to earth in tihe

Isaiah 2:9; “the great man
humbles himself.” God op

you be humble, or are you

Bible’s Answers
Basic Questions
L 4 A 4 —I
Today’s question is on the
power of the Holy Spirit. As
Christians, and as people
who live during the dispensa
tion of the Holy Spirit, it is
important for us to know
what the Holy Spirit has
power to do. In order to
answer this question, the
following comments will
serve as an outline for future
detailed study (on your
own).
The Power of the Holy
Spirit in Regard to Sin: (A)
The Holy Spirit has power to
convict of Sin. “And when he
is come, he will reprove the
world of sin and of
righteousness, and of judge
ment.” John 16:8-9. We can
never convict anybody of
sin. It is the power of the Ho
ly Spirit, through us when he
desires. (B) The Holy Spirit
has power to set people free
from the Law of Sin and
Death. “For the law of the
Spirit of life, in Christ Jesus,
hath made me free from the
law of sin and death. “
Romans 8:2. How does the
Holy Spirit do that? If we
live according to Him we will
not be in bondage to the
desires of the flesh (sin) we
will be free. (C) The Holy
Spirit has power to renew:
‘‘Not by works of
righteousness - but by the
renewing of the Holy Spirit.”
Titus 3:5.
The Power of the Holy
Spirit in Regard to our Rela
tionship to Christ: (A) The
Holy Spirit has power to
reveal Jesus Christ and His
glory to man. “But when the
comforter is come, whom I
will send you from the
Father - he shall testify of
me. “ John 15:26. “No man
can say that Jesus is the
Lord but by the Holy Spirit.”
I Corinthians 12:3. (B) The
Holy Spirit has power to
create in us Christ - like
qualities. “But the fruit of
the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith, weakness,
temperance: against such
there is no law.” Ga. 5:22-23.
-This life is not natural to
us. We cannot obtain it
through our own efforts. The
Holy Spirit is the source of
all these qualities. (C) The
Holy Spirit has power to
make us aware of who we
are to Christ. “Because ye
are sons, God hath sent forth
the Spirit into your hearts,
crying Abba, Father.” Gal.
4:6. For as many as are led
by the Spirit of God, these
are sons of God.”
The Power of the Holy
Spirit in Regard to our
Spiritual Growth: (A) The
Holy Spirit has power to
strengthen our inward
character. “That he would
grant you, according to the

Christ dwells in the hearts.
We will be “rooted and

(B) The Holy Spirit has

truth. “When he, the Spirit of
truth, is come, he shall guide
you into all the truth.” John

He will teach us the word of
God, “but unto us God
revealed them through the
Spirit, for the Spirit searches
all things, the deep things of
G0d...1 Cor. 2:10-14. He will
reveal and interpret his own
revelation. (D) The Holy
Spirit has power to help us
communiate God’s word to
others.” “And when they
prayed the place was shaken
where they assembled
together; and they were fill
ed with the HOly Spirit, and
they spoke the word of God

10. (E) The Holy Spirit has
power to guide our plans.
“So they being sent forth by
the Holy Spirit departed to
Cyprus.” Acts 12:4. In order
for us to be guided by the
Spirit we must do the follow
ing: (1) We must fully admit
our own inability to decide
wisely. (2) We must really
desire to know God’s way.
(3) We must ask the
guidance of the Holy Spirit.
(4) We must confidently ex
pect the guidance of the Holy
Spirit. (5) We must follow
step by step as the guidance
comes. (F) The Holy Spirit
has power to give
everlasting satisfaction.

Encounter
The movie, “Close En
counters of the Third Kind,”
is about communicating with
people from outer space. It is
about a personal, first-hand
experience with a UFO.
Christianity involves a
close encounter. It is a per
sonal commitment to the
true and living God.
Can you say that you have
really discovered the secret
of life? For some people, life
is a search that never ends.
They are looking for deep
needs. When they think
about it, they decide life
must consist of more than
acquiring things or more
than thinking of yourself
first. If you worship things
(just look for material
needs), you shrink yourself.
If you believe only in
yourself, you isolate
yourself. If you believe other
people have the answer, you
are doomed to a disappoint
ment. No human being is big
enough to be worshipped.
Are you looking for a
deeper commitment? Life
can be a discovery of a close,
personal relationship with
God. “This is life eternal, to
know thee, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ, who thou
has sent.” “This is,” means
right now. Eternal life is not
merely when we die. It’s a
new quality. This is an extra
meaning to what we unders
tand as eternity. It begins
now.
“Life eternal,” said Jesus,
“Is a matter of a personal
relationship with the only
true God.” Knowing God in
volves a close encounter.
This is more than knowing

about God’ closer than a far
off power. Having a first
hand, personal relationship
with the Living Lord - This
transforms life.
How can we know God like
that? God is so big. We are so
small. God is so good; we are
so anxious to go our own
way. How can we know God.
We are so bent on doing our
“own thing.”
God made the first step. At
a point in time in our history,
the almighty God visited this
earth. The invisible God
became visible in human
form. God revealed Himself
in Christ. Life begins when
you discover this. Trust it.
Lean on it. This is a present,
personal relationship with
Him as Lord and Savior.
This is a close encounter of
the God Kind.
