Forsyth Gets Revenge On Cherokee County
Dogs Squeak
By One Point
Last Friday night the For
syth County Bulldogs aveng
ed their worst defeat of the
season as they defeated the
Warriors from Cherokee
County, 46-45.
In a game that drew full
capacity at the Forsyth
County gym, there was
everything from slow-down
tactics to run and gun show.
Cherokee opened the game
with a stall technique, which
was unusual considering
their success against the
Bulldogs early in the season
using a run and gun type ac
tion.
The Warriors scored first
in the game with four and
one-half minutes left in the
quarter. Steve Reece tallied
the Bulldogs’ first points 20
seconds later. This was all
the scoring done in the
quarter until Chip Housley
hit a 16 foot jumper at the
buzzer to give Forsyth a 4-2
lead after one period of play.
Cherokee opened the scor
ing in the second quarter,
abandoning their slow down
strategy. During the second
quarter the score was tied
six times with Bulldog Jim
my McWhorter tying the
game the sixth time at 18
with 1:09 left in the half.
Jeff Perry followed with
another Forsyth basket to
give the Bulldogs a lead that
they would not relinquish but
once the rest of the night.
The Bulldogs managed
another basket as the
quarter ended and went to
the dressing room with a 22-

18 lead.
Forsyth continued to hold
onto their lead during the
third quarter as Perry led
the way with seven of his
team’s nine third period
points and the Dogs led after
three, 31-26.
Forsyth increased their
lead to seven in the final
quarter at 37-30 but
Cherokee then hit eight
unanswered points to take
the lead at 38-37 with 4:37 left
in the game.
Cherokee lost the lead two
minutes later when Perry
scored for Forsyth. Ronny
Bennett then hit two free
throws to give the Dogs a
three point lead with 2:09 left
in the game.
After Cherokee pulled to
within two on a free throw,
Monty Hammontree hit a
free throw for Forsyth to
again put the lead at three
with a score of 42-39 with 1:26
left in the game.
Both teams swapped
points until two seconds
were left and Cherokee
scored an unaccosted basket
and called time out with the
score 46-45. But, Cherokee
had used their allotted time
outs already and Forsyth
was awarded a technical
free throw and more im
portantly, the ball which
they hung onto to claim the
victory.

Ladies Piay
Tough Defense
The Lady Bulldogs played
a very tough defensive game
last Friday night and aveng
ed their worst defeat of the
season with a 58-49 win over
the Warriorettes of Cherokee
County.
While shooting a terrible
36 per cent from the field as
compared to Cherokee’s 51
per cent, it was the Lady
Dogs defense that controled
the game as Cherokee
recorded 21 turnovers for the
night. Forsyth, with only 10
turnovers, used the extra
ball possessions to take eight
more shots from the field.
Darla Sexton got the scor
ing started for Forsyth when
her basket early had the
score 3-2 Cherokee’s favor.
The Lady Dogs were never
able to take the lead during
this first quarter, though
Ginger Orr’s two free throws
pulled Forsyth within one at
5-4 and later Donna
McWhorter hit a basket for
two of her team high 14
points to again stay within
one point at 7-6.
Cherokee then extended
their lead to six until Dawn
Brown’s two consecutive
field goals put the score at
14-12, Cherokee’s favor, at
the quarter’s end. Lady
Bulldog Tracey Hughes
came off the bench during
the quarter to claim three
big rebounds.
Quarter number two saw
Cherokee gradually pull out
to a five point advantage at
23-18 with two and one-half
minutes left in the half. But,
Forsyth took charge at this
point and scored eight
unanswered points. Lady
Dog Tracey Gossett got the
streak going with her first
field goal of the night.
Brown added two free
throws and then with 1:24
left in the half Stacy Bennett
gave the Lady Bulldogs their
first lead of the night at 24-

23. McWhorter and Gossett
each added free throws
before intermission to give
Forsyth a 26-23 lead at
halftime.
After intermission
Cherokee continued their hot
shooting as they were good
on six of 10 attempts during
the third period, while For
syth could only manage four
of 13. But, again it was the
Lady Dogs’ hawking,
tenacious defense that forc
ed Cherokee into five tur
novers.
After Cherokee pulled
within one at the start of the
third stanza, Forsyth’s Amy
Cullen quickly put the Lady
Dogs back in front by three.
Forsyth managed to in
crease their lead to as many
as eight toward the end of
the quarter but Cherokee
scored the last four points of
the quarter to trail 41-37 go
ing into the final period.
The final stanza proved to
be Forsyth’s best from the
field as they connected on
five of seven attempts and
held the lead which ranged
from one to 11 points during
the quarter.
The Lady Dogs were also
seven of 11 at the charity
stripe to earn a well deserv
ed 58-49 victory.
