I—THE FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13,1980
(0
L.
Pet owners beware!
Too many dogs have disap
peared from the Forsyth
County area to be “just
lost”. Since most of the
“lost” pets reported to the
Humane Society have been
purebred or large dogs, we
feel compelled to warn pet
owners of the danger.
If your pet is missing,
report the loss immediately
to the Forsyth County
Humane Society, 887-6480.
Place an ad in the paper. If
“dognappers” were at work,
someone may have observed
the pick up.
If you see someone pick up
a dog, try to get the license
number of the vehicle and
phone the information to the
Humane Society. We must
stay alert as a community to
drive ruthless dognappers
elsewhere.
Now for the good news.
At a recent public hearing
called by the Forsyth County
Health Department, the pro
blem of rabies control was
U.S. Government Classes
Feature Guest Speakers
Five years ago the
American Government
classes at Forsyth County
High School introduced a
state, county and local
government class. This
class, supervised by Linda
Stone, was actually taught
by speakers from the city,
county and state govern
ment.
American Government 434
usually begins in the winter
quarter with a visit from the
State House of Represen
tatives members, Joe T.
Wood and Jerry Jackson.
The late Secretary of State,
Ben Fortson, always visited
this group each December
and gave a patriotic as well
as rallying speech.
City government speakers
have included Mayor Ford
Gravitt, City Councilmen
Lewis Ledbetter, Ralph
Perry and Rupert Sexton, ci
ty water and sewage
manager Carroll Buice
along with the student’s
favorites, Chief of Police
Gabe Dukas and Park and
Recreation Director Gerald
Blackburn.
County officials have
given of their time also.
Various county commis
sioners have visited the
government classes. These
have included: James Harr
ington, Garland Barron,
Leroy Hubbard, Bill Barnett
and Harrison Tallant. Coun
ty Administrator Donald
Major, Coroner Royston In
gram Jr., Tax Commis
sioner Bobby Gilbert and
Sheriff Wesley Walraven
have also spoken.
The Department of Family
and Children’s Services
always participates by sen
ding Director Ron McClure
and various staff members
including Jerri Gober,
Renay Heath, Susan
Bagwell, Nancy Gilbert and
Lally Purcell.
Local education par
ticipants have included the
School Superintendent
Robert Otwell, Curriculum
Director Betty Benson and
local Board of Education
members including Harold
Grindle, Almond Hill, Edsel
Orr, Harold Glover and Billy
Waters.
The state and local judicial
system participants have in
cluded State Patrol person
nel Sgt. Dunn of the
Lawrenceville Post and
Frances Bennett of the Can
ton Post, as well as Superior
Court Judges Richard
Neville and Marion Pope.
State Court Judge 8.8.
Robertson and District At
torney Frank Mills have also
attended the classes.
Probation Judge Joyce
Hawkins, Clerk of Court
Cecil McClure and Juvenile
Court officer Larry Petty
are also regular speakers.
Additional speakers have
been added at various times
due to student requests. R.C.
Vaughan from Peachtree
Parkwood Hospital in Atlan
ta speaks each year on
alcohol abuse. Gladys Bar

discussed. This meeting was
well attended and spirited.
We have state, county and ci
ty laws concerning rabies
control, but the county has
lacked the funds to enforce
these laws.
The Health Department is
working diligently to execute
a plan that will be a
workable procedure and also
bring in funds. They have
also graciously promised to
advise the Forsyth County
Humane Society concerning
future meetings and to keep
us informed.
Rabies control should be
supported by everyone. We
must all help the Health
Department implement
their program. We will
publish the final results of
their study when completed.
In the meantime, if you
are the victim of a dog bite,
phone the Health Depart
ment and report it. We hope
the public is aware of the
seriousness of rabies and the
importance of this program.
This year, two additional
speakers were solicited by
the students. These were
GBI Agent Mike Eason and
Jim Masaschi, personnel
director of the Georgia
Retardation Center.

“The Republican Party of
Forsyth County has been
very actively involved in a
voter registration drive and
telephone canvass. The
results have been very effec
tive in registering
Republican and Independent
voters who would like to see
our county a genuine two
party county,” Jordan said.
“The Republican Party is
actively encouraging a mass
number of Forsyth County
voters to participate in the
Presidential Preference
Primary on March 11. In 1976
approximately 25 per cent of
Forsyth County voters who
went to the polls asked for a
(blue) Republican presiden

forward to a goal of 50 per
cent on March 11, since we
have 90 per cent of the con
servative candidates on the
republican ballot,” Jordan
said.
