The annual running of the
Atlanta Steeplechase is
slated this year on Saturday,
April 5 at the Steeplechase
Course near Cumming. This
marks Atlanta’s 15th con
secutive year of the increas
ingly popular spectator sport
and again is expected to
draw large crowds of en
thusiastic fans.
Crack thoroughbreds from
leading stables located
throughout the east and
midwest will participate in
an afternoon of racing with
the purse totaling $40,000, an
increase of SIO,OOO over last
year.
“Atlanta is going over the
top,” observes John A. Wayt
Jr., chairman of the board of
stewards, “and our purse
structure is a record not only
for the Atlanta event but for
the Dixie Circuit as well.”
The Dixie Circuit comprises
races in Aiken, S.C.,
Camden, S.C., Tryon, N.C.,
Southern Pines, N.C. and
Clemmons, N.C.
“Many of the finest
jumpers are in training now
in Camden and in the
midwest and we expect a
multitude to enter our races
this year,” Wayt points out.
The 1980 Atlanta
Steeplechase program in
cludes five races over
hurdles and on the fiat, all
sanctioned by the National
Steeplechase and Hunt
Association.
Once again the event will
benefit Atlanta Speech
School, Inc., which is the
largest and most com
prehensive center in the
southeast, serving children
and adults with speech,
hearing and learning
disabilities.
Until last year the Atlanta
Steeplechase was tradi
tionally run in mid-March.
The new date proved so suc
cessful that Steeplechase of
ficials decided to switch per
manently to the first Satur
day in April.
Wayt also points out that
the purse money was in
creased in order to continue
to attract the best jumpers.
“We feel that Atlanta is a
testing ground of champions
and we want to continue to
put on a show of
significance. For instance
Martie’s Anger, winner of
last year’s Delta Air Lines-
Atlanta Cup, a tightly con
tested race, went on to win
other races and earned the
Eclipse Award, the “Oscar”
of the racing world, which
designates the year’s best
Steeplechaser,” Wayt add
ed.
The Steeplechase Course
is on Bethelview Road near
Cumming.

Pine Beetle
Can Cause
Tree Loss
The Southern Pine Beetle,
which caused a tremendous
loss of timber in many sec
tions of the state last year,
remains in the forests but is
now widely dispersed and
difficult to detect, according
to the Georgia Forestry
Commission.
Terry Price, commission
entomologist, said the
dispersed population has
been noted especially in
dense timber and lan
downers should carefully ex
amine their tracts for possi
ble infestation.
Price said trees that are
just now beginning to turn
color are pines that were ac
tually killed by the beetles
last October or early
November. He cautioned
landowners to cut out in
fested trees and clear a buf
fer zone from 40 to 100 feet
around the infested spot.
Ranger Ed Wright of the
Forsyth County Unit,
Georgia Forestry Commis
sion, said persons experienc
ing beetle damage should
contact his office for
measures that should be
taken and for salvage in
formation.
Price said he and en
tomologist Kerry Thomas
will also be training state
and industry foresters in the
latest techniques that have
come from research through
the expanded Southern Pine
Beetle Program of the U.S.
Forest Service.
