Ladies Upset Clarke
To Make The Finals
The Forsyth County High
Lady Bulldogs guaranteed
themselves a spot in the first
round of the Georgia High
School State Basketball
Tournament with a thrilling
41-37 victory over the Clarke
Central Lady Gladiators last
week in the opening round of
the 8 AAAA Region Tourna
ment, held in Athens.
Forsyth entered the tour
nament as the number two
team from the south sub
region. Clarke Central was
in the tournament as the
champions of the northern
sub-region. It wasn’t
anything new for the Lady
Dogs to be pitted against a
team that was ranked ahead
of them. That’s the way it
had been all season. To add
an even dimmer light on the
game before it even started,
was the fact that South
Gwinnett, winners of the
South Sub-Region, was
beaten soundly prior to For
syth’s game by Stephens
County who finished runner
up to Clarke Central in the
North Tournament.
Once the game got under
way however, all past per
formances of each team was
forgotten as both squads
fought one another frantical
ly for the win and further ad
vancement.
It took Clarke Central bet
ter than a minute and a half
to score the opening points of
the game and another two
minutes before they tallied
again. But it took the Lady
Dogs even longer to get on
the board and it wasn’t until
2:58 remained in the first
quarter that Lady Bulldog
Tracey Hughes scored her
team’s first points of the
night when she put back up
an offensive rebound to
break the ice for the Lady
Dogs. Clarke Central then
scored two quick baskets to
increase their lead 8-2. The
Lady Dogs’ Tracey Gossett
managed two points with two
minutes left in the quarter
and that’s how the period
ended, Clarke Central 8 and
Forsyth County 4.
Forsyth fell behind 10-4 as
the second quarter began but
a Gossett basket and two
Dawn Brown free throws
pulled Forsyth back to
within 2, at 10-8. The score
was 12-9 when Darla Sexton
hit for 2, and Clarke Central
called time out with 5:07 left
in the half. This time out was
to become very crucial
toward the end of the game.
After play resumed, Clarke
scored four unanswered
points but the Lady Dogs
clawed back to within two, at
16-14. The score went to 18-14
before Forsyth’s Stacy Ben
nett completed a three point
play when she was fouled
while shooting after pulling
down one of her 8 rebounds
for the night. Clarke then
made it a 20-17 game and it
looked like that would be the
score at half time but Brown
was fouled as she was trying
to get off a shot from mid
court with :01 left and hitting
both free throws, she pulled
her team to within one, 20-19,
at intermission.
The third period was a
slow one for both teams.
Clarke held a 24-20 lead with
three minutes left in the
quarter when Lady Dog
Lynn Hammontree pulled
her team to within 2. Fifty
seconds later, Donna
McWhorter tied the game at
24, but Clarke quickly
regained the lead they had
held all night and then added
another basket just before
the quarter’s end and For
syth found themselves trail
ing 28-24, going into the final
stanza.
Clarke again scored the
opening points for the
quarter as they had done all
night and increased their
lead to six points. Amy
Cullen stole the ball shortly
thereafter and scored on a
layup to pull Forsyth to
within 4 again. After both
teams were denied scoring
opportunities a couple of
trips up and down the court,
Clarke called their second
time out of the night with 5:31
left in the game. After play
was resumed each team
traded a couple of baskets
until Clarke called their
third time out of the game at
2:33. The teams only played
1:18 when play resumed
before Clarke called yet
another time out, their
fourth of the game leaving
them just one more. The
score at this point with 1:15
remaining was Clarke 36,
Forsyth 34.
Clarke padded their lead
Heroine
Lady Bulldog was the
“heroine” of the game last
week when she hit four
straight free throws with
seconds to go in the game,
giving her team a semi-final
win against Clarke Central.
Darla had seven points for
the game.

by one at 37-34 before Brown
hit to cut the lead to one and
the Lady Dogs were still
fighting with :55 left in the
game and possibly the
season. With 52 seconds left
in the game, Clarke missed
the front end of a bonus free
throw and 18 seconds later
Sexton was fouled while
shooting and was awarded
two attempts from the line
and a chance to put Forsyth
ahead for the first time in the
game. And with 33 seconds
left in the game that is exact
ly what she did as she sank
both attempts to give For
syth a 38-37 lead. After Sex
ton’s second free throw
Clarke called their fifth and
final allotted time out before
inbounding the ball.
After inbounding the ball
and getting it across mid
court, Clarke called another
time out but was awarded a
technical foul instead
because they were out of
time outs. Sexton hit the
technical free throw giving
Forsyth a two point lead with
:28 remaining and posses
sion of the ball. Sexton was
fouled again with :06 left and
Forsyth still clutching a slim
two point lead but it didn’t
seem to bother her as she hit
them both assuring the For
syth County Lady Bulldogs a
place in the state tourna
ment.
For the game the Lady
Dogs recorded a 33 per cent
field goal mark, were 68 per
cent from the free throw line
and had 13 turnovers. Clarke
recorded 28 per cent, 38 per
cent and nine respectively.

Lady Bulldogs Win Second
In Region Tournament
For whatever reason
(other than Stephens County
was a better team) the For
syth County Lady Bulldogs
couldn’t put together back to
back wins last week as they
fell to Stephens County 70-61,
the night following their win
over Clarke Central in the
Region 8 AAAA tournament.
