CHILDREARING
A human environment
specialist with the Univer
sity of Georgia Extension
Service says some of the best
child-rearing ideas for the
1980 s were published for
parents in 1929. Cindy
Darden says these old
suggestions are still
applicable today: Don’t tease
or use sarcasm with your
child; laugh with him, but
not at him. And don’t break
promises to your child or
make any you may not be
able to keep. Don’t lie to your
child. And don’t evade his
questions.

TOO MANY PUPPIES
DIE
Thousands of people will
buy cute little puppies for
gifts. Some will spend hun
dreds of dollars for their
puppies. Many of the pups
will become long-lasting
pets. But many others will
quickly get sick and die.
Why will many get sick
and die? Not because they
were badly treated by their
owners or at the pet store,
say officials. They blame
“puppy mill” owners - peo
ple who sell puppies to pet
stores.
Puppy Mills are places
where hundreds of pups are
raised for just one reason -
to sell them to pet shops.
There are about 3,000 mills
in the U.S., and government
officials say that about one
out of every four is over
crowded and unhealthy for
pups.
One of these unhealthy
mills is on a farm in lowa.
More than 75 pups on the
farm are squeezed into small
cages. The wire on the cages
is rusty and dirty. Flies buzz
around the puppies’ eyes and
on their food. They get no
love or attention. They suffer

in summer.
Pet owners have asked the
government to protect the
pups from bad treatment by
having inspectors check the
puppy mills. In some places
the government has shut
down mills that don’t take
proper care of pups. And
many pet store owners are
being more careful, too.
They now have vets check
puppies before they’re sold
to customers.
