The Living Way

Have you changed your mind about anything lately? Even
with the best among us there is plenty of room to change an
opinion or attitude. The ability to recognize quality changes
in people and events reflects the ability to change things
about ourselves. None of us likes change and we resist it no
matter how liberated we think we may be. I make this
discovery about myself all along that I’m pretty entrenched
with some things that really don’t matter much. Indeed,
there are some issues on which we should stand pat, but there
are others that leave us room to i rove and grow.
We all appreciate people who are “always the same’’ and
we usually mean that they are dependable, consistently
Warm and friendly and likeable. There’s another side to that
phrase which may not be flattering however, for it may
reflect a rigid resistance to growth and improvement.
Hopefully that won’t be the case for any of us reading this
paper today.
Life means change and change means life. They’re in
separable. Our task is one of discernment which changes are
helpful and wholesome, and, for the Christian, which changes
are harmonious with the gospel. How would Jesus meet the
change or what would He change about a situation. If you
belong to Him you’re obligated to review these questions in
the bright light of Jesus’ life and teachings. This falls into the
area of what I call significant change, whether it be personal
or social change. Because of his new allegiance the Christian
must always be in the process of evaluation and reconcilia
tion as regards change of any kind. But it’s no bore, it’s the
most challenging and exciting calling of all and you can be in
volved in it wherever you are, whatever you’re doing. It’s not
merely for preachers it’s for all of us.

Hancock with an Honorary
Doctor of Divinity Degree.
In 1969, Dr. Hancock was fly
ing a plane that went down.
Television and radio an
nouncements reported that
he was killed. God saw fit to
keep him alive. The doctors,
however, told thim that his
vocal chords and larynx
were destroyed and his life
as a preacher was ended.
God miraculously restored
his larynx and vocal chords
and performed a miracle
enabling him to continue
preaching.
Dr. Hancock is used fre

and Bible conferences
throughout the United
States. He has also con

countries outside the states.
He is a frequent speaker at
colleges, and is the author of
the book entitled, “The End

other booklets.
In February, 1976, Dr.
Hancock accepted the
pastorate of the Pinecrest
Baptist Church. The church
was averaging less than 800
in Sunday School. Within a
short time the church reach
ed a high attendance of 1,410
in Sunday School.
During his first year of
ministry there, the Mission
Program was greatly in
creased, now supporting
some 62 missionaries. A new
gymnatorium was dedicated
and the church continues to
grow and increase.
Dr. Hancock is married to
the former Mary Annell

W; w Bible’s Answers
Basic Questions
UL & Mm
Today’s question deals
with Christian Love and
what it has power to do.
First: What is the Biblical
definition of love? I am not
amazed that most of the
teachings of Jesus were, in a
very practical way, about
Love.
To Him Love was: the
very nature of God. The
cause of his birth, life and
death. The message He was
to preach. And’ the ministry
he was to perform.
No wonder He considered
Love to be: the new law. The
message of the greatest
commandement. The only
direct sign by which the
world can distinguish His
followers. The most dynamic
factor for forgiveness of
sins. The only way for an ac
ceptable sacrifice. And the
greatest testimony for the
glory of God.
To the apostle John Love
is: A sign of the new birth. A
proof of believing and know
ing God. “Beloved, let us
love one another for love is of
God, and he who love is born
of God and knows God. He
who does not love does not
know God for God is love.” I
John 4:7,8. A weapon against
fear. “Perfect love cast out
fear.” I John 4:18.
To the apostle Peter Love
is: A protector and a shield
against many sins. This is
what he meant by saying,
“Above all hold unfailing
your love for one another,
since love covers a multitude
of sins.” I Peter 4:8. What he
means is that where there is
love, there is no: pride,
selfishness, impatience,
anger, envy, immorality,
revenge, destructive
criticism, mistrust, divisions
and so on.
To Paul Love is: absolute
ly permanent - When all
things in which men glory
and pride themselves have
passed away, love will still
stand. Absolutely complete -

Corinthians 13:13.
Second: What does love
have power to do? Love has
power to bring to reality and
experience: The existance of
God. “We love because God
loved us and still does.”
Therefore, when we love one
another, we experience and
make real the love to God to
us. The Heart of His
Message, “The cross is the
heart of God’s message.”
The crucifixion is God’s way
of saying “I Love You” - our
response should be in the
same direction by loving one
another. The Nature of His
Kingdom - God’s Kingdom
is one people, one faith, and
one spirit. Divisions are not
suppose to take place among
God’s people. The Nature of
His Kingdom is Love. Where
there is no love among us -
there is no kingdom of God.
“Who wants to be the
greatest in the kingdom of
God?” - “Whoever is willing
to be a servant among you.”
Love has the power to
develop and improve the
Christ-like character in the
daily living of the Christians.
Patience, kindness, long suf
fering, humility, willingness
to forgive, trust, good man
ners and other qualities are
a result of one thing -true
Christian love.
Love has the power to help
us fulfill the Mission of
Christ. “Truly I say to you,
as you did it to one of the
least of these my brethren,
you did it to me.” Matthew
25:40. This either means that
doing it to the poor is like do
ing it to Christ.

Where Sin Abounds, Grace
Reigns In Righteousness
BY REV. JIMMY W.
BARNES
Evangelist
Romans 5:20-21, Moreover,
the law entered that the of
fense might abound, but
where sin abounded, grace
did much more abound. That
as sin hath reigned unto
death. Even so might grace
reign through righteousness
unto eternal life by Jesus
Christ our Lord.
The Age of Grace, if only
people could co rehend the
love and grace of God
toward mankind.
Before the law was given,
man was under the grace of
God yet unlike this period of
time they were not indwelled
by God’s Holy Spirit. They
lived simply by con
sciousness of good and evil
and had a choice of which to
do but Paul tells us now that
the law was given that it
might be made known what
the offense was.
Now understand that
where there was no law
there was mercy, but under

the law there was only judge
ment without mercy. If an
offense was committed the
law had to be satisfied to the
letter, an offense worthy of
death and was punished by
death with no mercy or
forgiveness.
Now, Paul tells us that
where sin abounded that is to
say where sin became
known, grace did much more
abound.
Jesus came and fullfilled
the law that is, He was
sinless. He was the only one
who ever kept the perfect let
ter of the law, therefore the
sacrifice of his life and his
blood on the altar was ac
cepted by God as my
substitute and yours. Now
Paul tells us that we who are
in Christ Jesus are dead to
the law. I ask you please to
read Romans Chapter 6.
You see, in Christ we are
free from the law because in
Romans 6:8, Paul says now
if we be dead with Christ we
believe that we shall also
live with him. How are we
dead in Christ? Simple, here
is the doctrine that people
are so confused about. We
are baptized by the Holy
Spirit into the body of Christ.
This is the baptism that

Also people who believe that
they are saved today and
must wait for the “gift” as
they call it should be made to
realize that at the moment a
person believes he is baptiz
ed by the Holy Spirit. If not
then he is not saved because
the Bible tells us that it is the
spirit that will raise us in the
last day.
The teaching of waiting for
the baptism of the Holy
Spirit comes from the early
church days.
You see while Jesus was
still on the earth and alive
the Holy Spirit had not come
to indwell the believer.
Those who believed in Him
before pentacost were sav
ed, but were old testament
saints, now there were those
who had been saved and then
when they met Paul they
were asked had they receiv
ed the Holy Spirit. They said
no they had not heard of it
and when they believed the
gospel of Christ they receiv
ed the Holy Spirit and
became new testament
saints, part of the bride of
Christ.
Today, there’ are no such
