BY DR. JOHN EARL
RABER
North Ga. (College
In a world of instant
everything, it’s little wonder
that some athletes believe
that there is also an instant
method of obtaining athletic
success.
From the onset, every
athlete should realize that
success in athletics is a com
bination of heredity, diet,
training methods, motiva
tion, and proper coaching.
Drugs do little to enhance
athletic success. In fact, as
proven up to this point, drugs
usually have, if not an im
mediate, a definite long
range negative effect on
those who take them.
Among the most popular
drugs of football players,
weight lifters, and body
builders are dianobol and
halotestin, two of the
androgenic-anabolic steroid
drugs. Some athletes,
regardless of repeated warn
ings from physicians, drug
gists, and physical education
experts about the danger of
steroids, continue to take
them with the hope that they
will become bigger, faster
and stronger.
The belief of the miracle
like property values of
steroids, such as dianobol
and halotestin, can easily be
ingrained in an athlete’s
mind. If you work out with
older, stronger and bigger
athletes who tell you that
steroids are the only way to
get to the top, which we all
want to do, then the tendency
is to take or do whatever is
necessary to get there.
Dianobol and halotestin
have some very negative
side effects. Dianobol serves
to synthesize protein, thus
rendering the testes, the
body’s natural protein syn
thesizer, somewhat useless.
Not to mention that sterility
and impotence are two other
possible side effects. Other
negative side effects include
impairment of the liver, the
promotion of malignant
growths, premature closing
of the growth line (epipysis)
of the bones, cardiac (heart)
problems, acne, and skin
hypersensitivity, among
others.
Naturally, no one has to
believe what has been scien
tifically proven about steroid
drugs. Since it’s your body
you can choose to do with it
as you wish. Then again,
when the body’s systems
start to fail or quit at the ripe
old age of 20 or 30 and from a
statistical standpoint it pro
bably will, don’t come cry
ing. You have been warned.
Nothing makes up for good
hard work and proper train
ing methods. There are no
chemical shortcuts to
athletic or any other type of
success.

On Fraud
A new statewide welfare
and food stamp fraud hot
line will begin operating
March 1.
And the voice at the other
end of the line will be Mrs.
M.T. Brown, who has spent
more than 30 years working
with Georgia welfare pro
grams.
According to Robert
Swain, director of the
Department of Human
Resources fraud and abuse
section, anyone wishing to
report a suspected case of
welfare fraud or food stamp
abuse can call Mrs. Brown
toll-free at 1-800-282-1063.
Mrs. Brown will be
answering the phone from 8
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday
through Friday. A recording
device will be used at night
and on weekends.
The information will be
turned over to a state in
vestigator who will review
the case in question. He may
also contact caseworkers in
the county where the fraud is
suspected or one of 50 county
welfare fraud workers in the
state as part of a complete
investigation of the charges.
State investigators may con
tact the person reporting
fraud if that person gives his
identity and permission to be
contacted.
“If we find evidence of
fraud, the appropriate ad
ministrative or legal action
will be taken to assure
repayment,’’ said Swain.
“More flagrant cases will be
referred to local district at
torneys for prosecution.”
Swain stressed that very
few persons on welfare
cheat. But when fraud does
occur everyone pays for it.
